I saw something disturbing the other night. At 4:30am I was stopped at the light at Riverside and either Vineland or Lankershim, can't remember, I was looking at the homeless encampment under the overpass when a Fire Dept. ambulance or paramedic box truck traveling south entered the underpass area slowed down and started blaring its sirens, no lights, zigzagged from one side to the other, then turned off the siren as soon as it exited. All a mean-spirited attempt to annoy those sleeping in tents. I did not get a truck number, wish I had. Is this sanctioned or tolerated behavior? If yes, it is shameful. If not, since I didn't get a truck number, you might want to put the word out that many in the community would be offended by this behavior.

Because of the size and relatively quietness, new firefighters are assigned here to spend about 5 months doing hands-on training, going on real calls and doing actual work at a slower pace before rotating out to other busier stations. Firefighter Jeff was quite friendly, inviting us in after their tiller truck had backed into the garage. We took the opportunity to take a look around and admire how organized and clean everything is. Each tool in the toolbox has its own indentation on the foam so that it stays in place and looks extremely organized. That's such a smart idea that I might copy for my kitchen drawer full of loose gadgets. During the tour, the station received a call that required paramedics and a fire engine, so Firefighter Jeff had to hurry out. We witnessed the sense of urgency in the station but it was a calm and collected rush. It was interesting to see the firefighters jump into their gear and GTFO of there. The alarm was of a low buzz/whoop and the announcement over the PA system was very matter-of-fact relay of information. I suppose if the alarm was shrilly like on TV or the movies and if the lady over the PA system shrieked like Kevin McCallister's mom every time, it would get old fast. We loitered around for a few minutes out back - saw their tool shed from the outside and saw that they had their gas pump. This is a single-level fire station so no fire poles here. We saw other firefighters during the frenzy but they went back inside after the trucks left. We didn't want to be weird and stick around unaccompanied and also there wasn't much else to see anyway. I don't recommend making a trip here to visit since firefighters need their rest, but if you happen to be walking by and a firefighter seem like they are willing to spend their downtime talking to you, then by all means, say hello

The old one turned into the Los Angeles Fire…read moreDepartment Museum next door (address shows Cahuenga but you enter from Cole Ave or De Longpre) and this Fire Station 27 is the newer and active fire station. I was babysitting this kid taking him to the Fire Museum next door but they were about to close and the kid haven't had enough of fire stuff for the day. The only way to get him away from the doors so that the museum can close was to call his attention to the fire truck heading towards this station. We kept a distance away on the curb from the station garage doors. I was hoping the crew would wave to the kid (and he waves back enthusiastically), then close the door and then I would drive him home. Firefighters need their rest from getting called out all the time! But, the captain was incredibly kind to call to us while helping the truck back into the station, and invite us in. What gave away his rank was that his uniform differed in color from the rest of the crew and the crew didn't disperse as soon as the garage door came down. They watched their boss present. The captain also later confirmed his rank in conversation. I thought it was funny that the captain grilled the kid pretty hard. I'm not sure what milestones kids are supposed to reach at certain ages but this kid is not quite 4 years old yet he was able to answer all of captain's questions correctly. They were actually a bit technical for a preschooler! But then, when asked "what do firefighters do in their downtime when not out on a call?" the kid answered, "start a fire." ROFL. Not sure if the kid is going to grow up to be a firefighter or a comic. We got to see the different trucks (engine, truck, pumper), some of the insides of said trucks (who knew that besides the extremely long ladder of a tiller truck there are also a half dozen ladders inside of various lengths?), and what the mobile command center (back of the battalion chief's truck) looks like. It's not just physical work of putting out a fire. Firefighting involves physics and technology - it gets more interesting as I learn more about it. I won't be back so that these guys can have their peace and do their jobs saving lives and structures. Next time, I'll probably take this kid to the police station just around the block from here, bother them instead. I'm grateful to Station 27 for the welcoming and educational experience!

Being a retired Navy Captain with combat experience, it is always rewarding to meet top professionals who take pride in their mission and love what they are doing. I had an appointment to see Doctor specialist that morning. Later at 7:00am I was in extreme pain and needed the ER. 6:30 is shift change. They sent 2 baby firefighters. Not EMTs. A young girl, smallish and a 23 y.o. guy, also not too big, not yet an EMT. I couldnt walk and was in screaming pain. These 2 raw untrained firemen were overwelled. Barely carried me down a few stairs, and put me on a guerny to hospital ER. They were untrained, unprepared and acted like I was bothering them. I don't know what crew they were. Shocking that the Captain sent out 2 small unqualified, unprepared, probationary "Firefighters" on a medical emergency.
