The ingredients are all so fresh and all their dishes have unique spins. The chicken salad in a fresh papaya was delightful. The Haole Boy pizza was every Hawaiian pizza lovers dream. The dessert fridge was a party for the eyes. So many delicious and unique desserts from pumpkin pie to Dubai Brownies. There is something for everyone! The ambience is wonderful too! With local paintings adorning the walls and the restrooms. A must stop and must see! Also plenty of room for a crowd outside at the picnic tables in the front and on the side.

They have ample parking out front, and as this is situated in a slightly more rural part of the island, I wouldn't expect them to be extra extraordinarily busy. They are also right across the street from a renowned bakery for Malasadas (donuts with no hole). Service was quick and kind throughout our stay. Huli Huli Chicken (7/10) - they give a massive entire half chicken! As expected, the thigh and wings were super tender. I will know, that this chicken breast was probably one of the most tender chicken breast that I've ever had. SOOO JUICY!!! the meat itself was super succulent and each bite was very tasty. - my only complaint is regarding the flavor. Huli Huli chicken is usually barbecued outside, with a pretty crisp and dark exterior. However, this chicken's exterior was quite pale, and I'm unsure if they grilled it. It's possible that it is a baked chicken. Overall, the spot is unique because it claims it's the southern most restaurant of the USA. The Huli Huli chicken is super tender, like the exterior signature barbecue flavor that other local spots have.

Walked in and it's like instant comfort--sweet bread smell hitting you before you even figure out what you want. Grabbed a few items and every single one delivered. Soft, fresh, just the right amount of sweetness without feeling heavy. One of those spots where you take a bite, pause, and go "ok yeah... this is why people talk about this place." What I liked most is it didn't feel like a tourist trap--it felt real. Good energy, quick service, and plenty to choose from whether you want something sweet or just a quick snack for the road. Definitely one of those must-stop spots when you're cruising the island... just don't plan on leaving with only one thing.

The only items in their pastry case was two types of turnovers, bread pudding, normal malasadas with no fillings, and "Bismark" malasadas, malasadas filled with white cream and topped with chocolate. None of the fruit filled malasadas available. Like most of the guests in line, we were frustrated at the availability, or lack thereof. At the register, we overheard the woman behind the counter confirm that most of the store's inventory had been cleared out by locals who had placed large phone-in orders beforehand. In my opinion, this shortage could have been avoided: if large orders are placed well in advance, it seems like they could have planned better for their in-store guests by making more inventory? In any case, the plain malasada I had was fine, but not mind-blowing. Definitely not something I would go out of my way to try out, nor something I would wait in a line line for. The malasada had obviously been sitting around all day in the case and didn't taste especially fresh. If anything, the malasada was a little on the dense side. Out of curiosity, I also got a block of their bread pudding, and my goodness, that thing is a brick. The bread pudding here is dense! The bread pudding is loaded with raisins. If you're a raisin fan, you'll absolutely love the bread pudding. For everyone else, the raisins make the bread pudding a bit too sweet. Overall, my visit to Punalu'u Bake Shop was pretty disappointing. I would unlikely stop by again if I'm visiting this part of the island.

The food was tasteless and I don't appreciate when places try to get a double tip. Food options around the area are very limited, but I encourage tourists to take a chance and explore further. This place is a great convenience for people visiting Hawaii's Volcano National Parks and are starving after a long day of sightseeing. Unfortunately, I was very let down considering the great reviews it has online. This is a food truck, so as expected, the parking is extremely limited and there are only two picnic tables available if you choose to sit down and eat. The area is nice if you don't mind eating outdoors. When I went, there were only 2 people working in the truck. They were extremely nice and did warn us about waiting times. There was a long line of people so we had to wait about 25mins for our food. Honestly, this is not inherently a problem, but be ready to wait if it's busy. Now for the food and the reason I'm giving this place a low rating. I was allowed to mix the carnitas tacos and the chicken taco plate given that they're all the same price. The chicken had a nice spice to it, but every item on the dish was very bland. The rice felt dry, the refried beans felt like they were straight out of a can, and it could have all used some salt. But the big nono was that it appears they included a tip in their total before handing the machine over to you to add a tip and pay. Unless you tell me Hawaii's tax is close to 20% (which I know it's not), I find it very disrespectful when businesses do this to their customers.
