Mixed plate with dirty rice and beans & grilled cheese with pulled pork

Amazing barbecue in an unexpected location. Meat was tender with a tangy barbecue sauce. Friendly service. Lemonade was refreshing too.

The Big Island has needed some good BBQ, and Da Bomb BBQ is definitely worth trying. LOCATION AND AMBIANCE: I came across Da Bomb BBQ during Hilo's April "Food Truck Friday" at the bottom of Waianuenue Ave in the lot just below Hilo Hostel. There were two really nice guys who had a tent set up and were selling BBQ ribs and brisket, and they had a smoker set up on site, so you know the food was made fresh. I'm not sure where they're usually located, but I'm glad that they were at Food Truck Friday so I could try their food. FOOD: Like many food trucks, the menu had just a few items: BBQ ribs ($12), brisket ($15), combo ($15), and iced tea. I tried the brisket, and it was good. The plate had two large slices of brisket (maybe 1 cm thick by 6 inches long by 2 inches wide) with a sauce (not sure what kind), baked beans, and cole slaw. The brisket was tender and fatty. The cole slaw and beans were good too, but not anything super special. I was expecting the iced tea ($1/cup) to be Southern sweet tea, but it was just regular iced tea. SERVICE AND COST: The guys were really nice, and the portion size seemed to fit the price pretty well. I had snacked a couple of hours earlier in the day, so I actually only ate half of my meal and felt pretty satisfied. OVERALL: I enjoyed my food and was generally happy that Hilo even had a Food Truck Friday, so I'd recommend this place to friends. The Big Island doesn't have a lot of this type of BBQ, and the food was pretty good, so Da Bomb BBQ gets 4 stars based on the quality of this type food for the Big Island. If we were in the South, however, this place would probably get a 3.

Mixed plate. BBQ chicken and beef ribs.

They have ample parking out front, and as this is situated in a slightly more rural part of the island, I wouldn't expect them to be extra extraordinarily busy. They are also right across the street from a renowned bakery for Malasadas (donuts with no hole). Service was quick and kind throughout our stay. Huli Huli Chicken (7/10) - they give a massive entire half chicken! As expected, the thigh and wings were super tender. I will know, that this chicken breast was probably one of the most tender chicken breast that I've ever had. SOOO JUICY!!! the meat itself was super succulent and each bite was very tasty. - my only complaint is regarding the flavor. Huli Huli chicken is usually barbecued outside, with a pretty crisp and dark exterior. However, this chicken's exterior was quite pale, and I'm unsure if they grilled it. It's possible that it is a baked chicken. Overall, the spot is unique because it claims it's the southern most restaurant of the USA. The Huli Huli chicken is super tender, like the exterior signature barbecue flavor that other local spots have.

As soon as we entered the bake shop, we were astonished to find a long line. However, the line moved pretty quickly. I got the veggie avocado cheese sandwich. My husband got the fried fish plate. We also got a few Malassadas. This was like a fried doughnut. We got the mango, guava and pineapple flavors. My favorite was the pineapple one. The bread itself was super soft, and the pineapple jelly was super tasty. The mango pastry was also good, however, it was a bit dry for my liking. My veggie sandwich was packed with a variety of vegetables. The bread itself was very soft. I did have to add a bit of hot sauce, salt, and pepper because the sandwich itself did not have any flavor. My husband's dish also lacked flavor so he had to add a lot of hot sauce, salt and pepper. All in all, we had a great experience. The buns are a must try. They have plenty of outdoor spacing for seating. They also have a ton of interesting items to purchase. Given the historical relevance, this spot is a must visit.

I immediately subscribed to their newsletter so I could keep up to speed on what they where offering. In a recent trip to Hawaii, we were finally able to visit in person and it was a fun experience. Enthusiastic staff, lots of laughter, delicious fruit slushies, Art Gallery with featured local artists, penny the pig, baby ducks, parrots that would squawk at you until you engaged in conversation. Premium Kau Coffee, Macnuts, chocolate, short bread, slushies, pizza (on the day we were there) made by two Italian guys. Yes please! After we gorged on free samples and margarita pizza, we went on a shopping spree at the well stocked gift shop (not sure if that's the correct term, maybe farmstand?). Since we spent a certain amount on goodies, a discount was given along with free shipping to Alaska (what?!?). It makes me so happy just knowing that places like this exist. My only regret about stopping is that because we were in go, go, go mode to get to a birthday party, we didn't spend nearly enough time here as I would've liked. Next time!

Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable, and I loved learning how the honey develops its unique flavors. Best of all, it feels great to support local farmers!
