When traveling overseas, I never have considered the option of obtaining foreign currency stateside before travel. But it seems to be a popular practice with many. Is it better to do so, or exchange your dollars when you reach your international destination? As for me, I have observed that if you go to the right places at your destination, you can get a competitive rate. However, there is the argument that if the dollar is strong, it may be advantageous to change your dollars before leaving. This could be true, also if you go to the proper sources that give you the best rate. In my experience, depending on the global destination, sometimes currency exchanges can give you rates that are better than the banks. And also remember that some places do charge extra fees. My visit to LA currency was to do the reverse, exchange different foreign currencies into US dollars. I learned a few things. They do not accept coins, only bills and that too only the current notes that are in circulation. I was surprised that left over foreign currency from a recent trip of 8 months ago were not accepted. Therefore, my bills from Sri Lanka did not qualify for exchange. So were bills from the Dominican Republic and Mexico. These last two were long ago trips .....of notes found in the bottom of drawers :). My bills from the Philippines and Thailand, were able to be converted to dollars. This currency exchange has two very efficient tellers who provided excellent dialogue and service.

2 years ago I was going to Europe and have emailed several currency exchange places to get some rates and the LAcurrency was one of the places that replied right away and gave me the best rate and since then I have been going to do my exchanges there. LAcurrency exchange offers excellent and very friendly Service. I contacted them through Yelp to see if they could help me out with the two currencies that I needed for a trip and they (Manvel A.) replied almost immediately back to me. They had the small bills in both currencies in house and I didn't need to wait for it to be ordered and delivered in three working days like at most banks. The only thing I can't recommend yet is selling back any excess bills/coins I may have as we have not left on our trip yet, but I will let you know how that goes too. read more

I've exchanged Euro's here twice and both times I had a very good experience. I call ahead of time to ensure they have the currency I need. I like that they don't change extra fees for exchanging currency. They exchange exactly what you need at market value. Very conviniently located in Van Nuys. Definitely a place I would go for currency exchange. read more

I haven't been here since 2020, as I didn't travel overseas at all since then, so I had no need to exchange money since then, but now it's time to head out again, and it's always nice to come back here, as this is my go to place for all currencies, as I've exchanged for Euros here, and French Polynesia Francs. Very professional folks run this operations, always making it simple for the customer, and I love the website with real time exchange rates, but you can still call in to see the most up to date rates, in case there is by chance a delay on the website. I love the $3.00 refund if you check in with the app, and great to see you all again. They've always had my needed currencies in stock in all denomiations, but it's best to call to see if your currency is in stock, and rates applied are always when transaction is being made, not the rates of when seen earlier online. They don't tend to fluctuate that much within minutes, anyway, if at all, but sometimes you're surprised and you get an even better rate at point of transaction. I never go to any banks or credit unions to exchange, as this place truly has the best rates, and it's great that they have other locations around the city as well, but I've always gone to this locations, which is closer to me and really easy. Through the years I have exchanged currency in numerous places. Went in to LAcurrency for an exchange for an upcoming trip. I called ahead to ensure that they had the currencies and denominations that I needed. Service was quick and courteous, and the rate is fair and competitive. As of today 1 British Pound is about $1.22 and 1 Euro is about $1.10 so they are just about equal. But LAcurrency may be a bit different in addition to their service fees. But they are still a fair company that I will use again.

This place used to be good or perhaps on the day I went they just had two of the worse employees working that day. I have used this place so often to exchange money that most places don't have for example Icelandic and Danish kroner, I've also purchased pounds and euros. I have gotten Danish Kroner from this place at least for times and every time I have been I'm always greeted by this really young friendly girl that is always extremely helpful. That is what made this place so great it's nearby, had the money I needed and friendly service. Well that all changed about two weeks ago when I needed Norwegian Kroner, I called ahead to make sure they had it and the amount I needed. Well seeing as it's uncommon currency they only had about $300 and I needed $800, they informed me it would take until 2 the next day to have the rest, this was really close as I flew that same day but it was a last minute request so I understood. I explained to the cashier over the phone that either my friend or I would go that day and take what they had and the other would go the next day to get the rest, all I was told was okay and asked for my name. The next day I came to get the rest of the money after 2pm like they said, when I arrived I was hardly welcomed by a lady who had the face of permanently having a putrid smell under her nose... Nonetheless I proceeded to explain to her what I was there for and that I had called ahead as I had time constraints. Still she sauntered back and forth before getting and an equally incompetent person to come and assist with my exchange. Every time before when I have come to this store I have had cash this time I did not, so the fact that I would get charged for using my card and that it would be such an ordeal was unbeknownst to me as there also are no signs that state this and its certainly not information I received over the phone. Well this obviously was an inconvenience since I could have easily done my exchange in the airport for what I was being charged but as I was already there I decided to continue, the lady with the putrid smell face kept telling me I could go to the ATM at 7/11... okay not helpful, obviously I didn't want the extra fees as it was and I would not be able to pull the amount I wanted from a 7/11 ATM... had they informed of this prior to my arrival I clearly could have gone to my bank and gotten the cash. At all of this I had already spent 20 wasted minutes there only for both of the cashiers to tell me I couldn't use my card because they couldn't figure out the machine... I was livid not only had I wasted my time but I also had to leave without the money I needed. Oh and side note... they sold my friend Danish Kroner instead of Norwegian Kroner even after I had called them to inform them she would come in under my name for the Norwegian Kroner. Overall and unfortunately absolute worse experience ever it doesn't matter how conveniently located it is I will never go there again and I am yearling everyone I know to do the same and avoid this place. read more

Let me start by saying that I go to this location due to the amazing staff. Their customer service is above and beyond. Their knowledge and expertise is out of this world. I have found this place and I am very glad that there is a nice and convenient location with a big free parking lot, that I can exchange money for my traveling. It is hard to buy or sell foreign currency with NO Fees or without any additional commission charges in Los Angeles area, however this guys are offering really good rates with no additional costs. After a quick online search for a place to change American dollars to Canadian dollars this place caught my attention, what attracted me most was their website.
