I visited the Jefferson Brentwood Breast Center this week for a routine mammogram. It was a…read morepleasant, very clean facility with clear signage that made it easy to find my way. I was seen by wonderful imaging tech who obviously knew her stuff and moved things right along (the best mammogram techs definitely have some of the best people skills on the planet, if you ask me!). Afterward, I went downstairs to get some blood work done which had been previously ordered by my nurse practitioner. A wonderfully streamlined and nearly 100% painless process, facilitated by a pleasant and highly skilled phlebotomist. It couldn't have gone better. My only concern: at the mammogram check-in, at the front of the patient line next to mine, a prospective patient was being quizzed by a staff member. Seems that the patient was in the prep process for some sort of surgery(?). The staff member seemed quite hard of hearing and spoke incredibly loudly. Everyone in the check-in line, but also those who were in the waiting room 30 feet away, could hear every word as the staffer asked questions. Did the patient have tattoos, piercings, breast augmentations, etc. The patient answered softly and seemed mortified that her business was being broadcast so widely. I have good hearing, but I had to lean in very close to the other staff member to hear what she was telling me because her colleague was speaking so loudly. Perhaps pre-op sessions could be done in a private room(?)

I said, "I have multiple tests; you should be able to see them in the system." She checked and saw them. She said, "well I'll have to poke you again." Maybe if you had reviewed the list in advance, you wouldn't have to. She went on to say I would owe over $80 for the tests and to give her a credit card. I told her that was an error, as these are standard tests I've received for three decades and also I had met my insurance out of pocket maximum for the year. She would not do the draw without payment. I asked her which tests were showing charges. She said she didn't know and would have to print it out to find out. Okay, so do that... I continued to tell her that was wrong but she would not move forward without payment up front. I refused and did half the tests. I then contacted my insurer and ordering provider to verify all CPT codes and associated diagnoses, and they said everything *IS* covered 100%, but that "Quest does this to a lot of patients and then you have to fight for reimbursement from them." Knowing I have confirmation that nothing on my insurer's or provider's end is misaligned, I set another Quest appointment--at a cost to my PTO--and tried to call Quest to verify they will not have the same story next time, but it was impossible to get anyone on the phone. So, am I satisfied with my last appointment? No. I historically use LabCorp and only used Quest because I work for UPMC and they are the partner that can "see" all the labs. But if this happens again when I go next week, I will no longer use Quest -- and probably will advise patients against it as well given this is apparently common.

They have an incessant TV commercials running over and over and over again. This becomes a especially aggravating because they constantly overbook and understaff. They request that you make an appointment and provide all your information before your appointment time as the guys to speed things up. Reality is you will wait for over an hour per your appointment. They will give you no notification of delays even though they send texts. I waited 65 minutes my last appointment when I walked in there were 20 people in the waiting room with only two people drawing blood. this is their business model. I spoke with a phlebotomist and she assured me that everybody in the company is aware of that and I've complained to management but management only concern is to maximize profit. They do not care for their patients or their employees. The turnover rate is very high because of their horrific environment. the phlebotomist also shared with me that most patients are so tense from waiting so long that she has difficulty in drawing blood. Avoid this place at all costs.

There are limited medical services available here but they also offer physical therapy. Upon entering the complex there is an elevator to your left which will take you to the 2nd floor. On this particular visit I was scheduled to meet with my orthopedic surgeon for a re eval on a leg muscle injury I suffered back in Feb. The space is set up for social distancing. Masks are required when entering the complex. One of the nice things at this facility is that you do not have to wait in your car to be called in and be seen. You are asked to come within a 5 minute window of your appt time and they will get you checked in and set up. When I arrived there were very few people there and it didn't take long to be seen. Copayments that are due at time of visit can no longer be done by cash. Cards only are accepted. They do ask you the typical Co-Vid 19 questions before they let you in. One positive answer will disqualify you from your scheduled appt. After checking in I was taken back to the exam room by a nurse wearing a mask. I noticed that they lay fresh paper on the exam table once you walk in. She reviewed my medical history and then I had the usual wait for the physician. He came in, did the exam, gave me the necessary script I needed for ongoing physical therapy and was finished. Photos are not permitted due to HIPAA regulations. I was pleased with my visit since I have worked with this orthopedic surgeon in the past. Free parking is available outside and a certain number of spots near the front are for handicapped individuals.
