Tried this place for the first time and weren't disappointed. My wife had ceviche meal and I had the huevos rancheros with a barbacoda taco. We also ordered some bean cheese with avocado nachos, they were a little stingy with the Avocado that's why they get 4 stars. read more

I have been going to this at one time great restaurant for years but in the last year or so the place never is open on a consistent basis and the food quality has dropped significantly. I truly thought this was one of the best hidden spots in the area but when one lady that was always there the place just went to pot. This spot only sits 24 people maximum so hopefully you can plan your visit during the "off" hours. I stopped in at 11am on a Thursday and had the place to myself. Their chips and salsa is complimentary and is wonderful! The chips are the thin restaurant style, and their salsa is on the runny side with some sweet heat action going on. 1 Barria Taco, a breakfast burrito, and a small Horchata came in at $21. As you can see on the menu I posted that allot of prices are "missing" off of it. For the size of the Barria Taco and comparing it to the cost of it, I'll pass on it next time. Very little filling in the taco, but the flavor was right where it should be for Barria. As far at the service goes, I hardly seen anyone at all after the chips and salsa were brought out. They disappeared into the kitchen and didn't return for quite awhile. I placed an order at 1108am and the breakfast burrito (bacon, chorizo, and link sausage) was finally brought out to me at 1144. The horchata had a powdery taste to it as if it was just water and powder being stirred/recirculated via machine. For horchata lovers, I would recommend a pass on this. Visited Ferris, TX to attend mass and found this little place to get breakfast. The Bistek with eggs were cooked perfectly. The chorizo con huevos were the perfect flavor. The seasoned potatoes stood out, because of their crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. The perfect potatoes. The breakfast plates remind me of the Mexican breakfasts in South Texas. Decided to come to tjj hi is little place in Ferris, place is small but they offer a variety of hood options from Birria, street tacos, breakfast, tortas and other good options. I ordered the quesotacos de Birria and a Mexican coke, although the Birria was good and the portion of meat was big I spent around $13 for my two tacos and coke. Get ready to read. So the restaurant is super cute ! Clean restroom very important with little ones. For starters we had chips with salsa along with their loaded queso . The queso is so good! Don't skip out on it , it's elevated from the any other queso you've tried at other places. My children and I ordered their agua Fresca melon. This agua is so delicious and has the perfect amount of sweetness. I also ended up ordering a spicy mango michelada that was really cold and perfectly spicy. I loved the chamoy rim too. My meal I ordered a chile relleno burrito and it was PACKED! I was so happy to see how full it was stuffed with the carnitas . Saved the other half bx it is so filling . My daughters torta was not soggy at all and filled with meat too. Her fries were very crispy and perfect portion . My son had trompo tacos w rice and beans. He said the tacos were delicious and sides tasted amazing ! Now my husband is very picky and he ordered 4 tacos de barbacoa and menudo. The tacos were really good and juicy. His menudo was a big portion! I haven't seen a big portion of menudo anywhere else. It had a lot of tripa and it was well seasoned ! The last item we ate was the mulitas birria . I've had birria before but many places struggle with keeping the tortilla crispy. This was not an issue here. Ok for this price, the food better be effin great. I did not care for the guacamole-the texture was gooey for my liking and I am used to a lighter green colored guac. I ate around it. There were 8 large shrimp on my plate and they cooked my onions and bell peppers extra crispy how I requested. Beans and rice were good.The flour tortillas were thicker than I am used to and were the size of a the street taco corn tortilla my hubby had on his tacos.He had no complaints on anything on his plate!Another lady brought red and green hot sauce to the table. The green was hotter than the red; but both were tasty.The lady told me to help myself to more tea if I wanted anymore tea.Expected. Since there was no waitress. They had a now hiring sign on the door. For what? There was no one there but my hubby and we had been there for about 45 minutes or so. The lady came by to see if we were ok. And we were. We tried to hurry up a bit because we were joined by the ants on the wall. To sum it up, the food was good, the staff were pleasant, the place was cool and clean, but the price was way to expensive. Ferris, Texas, is truly off the beaten path; but for us, it lies between I-45 and I-35 on FM 664 and in our neck of the woods. A tiny town with a burgeoning rural population, I expect to see more growth along I-45; but IN town there are some great little food gems. La Zacatecana is one of those. There are home cooks at work here. Their menu is not large; but everything is made with care and made fresh. The chips are home made. The salsa is delicious. They have three squirt bottle sauces that come to your table with everything on the menu - A red, green and habanero. All are spicy in varying degrees and very good. Probably the most popular menu item is the mixed grill - chicken, beef, shrimp and nopalito (cactus) strips. The meats are flavorful and tender and the shrimp is perfectly cooked. The tortillas are also homemade and there are plenty of them because this platter is enough for two people. The side dish of refried beans and rice may not be, but you may not need it. We had an order of guacamole that was perfectly seasoned and definitely worth ordering. I had ordered chicken enchiladas and although they serve these with sour cream, they do not have a salsa verde or a tomatillo sauce. The enchiladas come with a red sauce that I did not get; but I did get the queso fresco. The Chicken was tender and the three enchiladas were stuffed with chicken!! The platter came with perfect beans and rice. They have street tacos, gorditas, tortas, soups, a variety of dinners, shrimp coctel, and fish tacos. They have breakfast and lunch as well as dinner and are open all day, from 9 to 9. Closed on Mondays. Lunch specials daily, changing daily with new ones added to the menu at times. Very traditional, very good and in a very small cafe. Mostly booths, a few small tables. Stop here when you're in town! read more
