I had never had Syrian food before, but after my trip to France, I had had it twice (both times at Alyssaar) and enjoyed both times immensely. My five friends and I came to Alyssaar after seeing that it had good reviews on Yelp, but we couldn't possibly have expected how attached we would get after just one trip. We were first greeted at the door by Abboud, the one man serving tables who was genuinely excited to meet us. One couldn't possibly fake his friendliness and hospitality. He is absolutely a pleasure (très charmant!) and went out of his way to make everyone feel comfortable, despite having only learned English from movies. He started out by explaining to us that this meal would be an experience of discovery, which it most certainly was in the most enjoyable way possible. Everything I tried here was incredible. I suggest coming with a friend (or a large group of friends) and ordering one of the fixed-price menus, because you'll be able to share with each other. Abboud paired our group up and taught each pair what order we should share our appetizers in to maximize the pleasure in our meals. Each appetizer was wonderfully flavorful. All the main courses we tried were phenomenal, but the one that especially stood out to me was the "boeuf à la cerise" (beef cooked in a cherry sauce, wrapped with herbs--subtle flavor, just the right amount of sweet and tart and savory). But really, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's perfect. Same with the desserts, although if you want to try something you've never had (and probably never will again), try the Syrian cheese dish--it's this lovely, soft cheese served with cream and a sweet sauce. Amazing. The baklawa also puts all other baklava I've ever had to shame. After dinner, try the house digestif--again, absolutely lovely. They were very nice and accommodating when we had questions of their menu items. My husband and I had intended to sup at another restaurant that ended up being closed for congé annuel. We crossed the river, got caught in a rainstorm, and took refuge under an awning. When I realized we were close to Le Jardin de Berthe (which I keep hearing rave reviews about from vegans on facebook), I suggested we try it. We rolled in (literally - we were pushing a stroller), half-dripping wet and looking a bit confused at the layout of what I thought was going to be a casual cafe. The waitress who approached us asked if we had a reservation. (Oops, no we did not.) After some logistical discussion between three of the staff, they decided they could seat us. (Hooray!) Our waiter (thankfully not the girl, who was visibly frustrated that we A) did not have a reservation and B) were obviously not native French speakers) helped me carry the stroller down some steep steps and showed us to a table for two. It was against the wall and the only place to put the stroller was directly in front of the table, blocking the waiter from getting very close. I didn't see any highchairs and we weren't offered one so maybe this isn't the best place for kids. The waiter was nice enough but obviously in a bit of a hurry so we felt rushed. I don't know if it was because we had a baby in a stroller, because we didn't have a reservation, or both. (Or maybe it was just the self-consciousness of new parents adjusting to eating with a baby who makes noise? Lots of variables.) Anywho, I ordered the salad and my husband ordered a ravioli dish with cream and bacon and - seriously - a quarter of a wheel of what we think was reblochon. He couldn't finish his either because it was so heavy but he enjoyed it! The rest of the vegetarian menu was not very impressive but I suppose the fact that they have a vegetarian menu at all should impress me. (And it does!) Other options were the ravioli dish sans bacon, a soy "steak", and a veggie burger (which sounded like the soy "steak" on a bun with some veggies.) I definitely recommend the salad, as the vegetables were high quality, in season, and super tasty. The dressing was good too - not the usual yellow French dressing but something a little fancier. (It definitely included mustard though, as usual.) We'll probably go back (with a reservation) and give the waitstaff and the other items on the menu a second chance. I'll update my review then.

The vegetarian salad is delicious - lots of beets, asparagus, hearts of palm, carrots (done in that oh-so-delicious French style that I can never seem to replicate), and about every other kind of veggie you can imagine. Okay, this one actually is kind of salad-like. The ravioli salads, on the other hand, are just intense. Delicious, but crazy. Don't get one of those thinking you're being healthy...it just ain't happening. That being said, the salade sicilienne is freakin yummy. Ravioli, tomato sauce, bacon, AND a poached egg all on top of a huge salad. Yes, please! About 10 euros each, maybe a little more. I know it seems pricey for some greens, but these are worth it for sure. Go for lunch + go early - it gets super crowded, especially at dinner.
