This was the first meal that we had after arriving in the Puglia region of Italy. We heard that this region was becoming one of the top foodie destinations in the world, and we were not disappointed. We tried some of the typical dishes of the region, and have since learned that most of the cooking is very simple, but the use of some of the best produce in the world makes every dish delicious. We started with burrata, and it was amazing. We do not get cheese like this anywhere I've been in the US. Next came a bean dish with sausage, and the beans were mashed so finely, the texture was similar to mashed potatoes. Then a eggplant lasagne, but without the noodles. I don't even like eggplant, and I thought it was delicious. Last but not least, came the lemon sorbet, which the region is famous for. And they serve it in a carved out lemon. Yum! There was also a chocolate soufflé, but soufflés are a French thing, so it was good, but not incredible. A good place to start off our trip! And a good place to sample the flavors of the Puglia region.

What an awesome find! Our AirBNB host recommended this place, and it is well reviewed/rated on TripAdvisor and Foursquare. If you're trying to find your way here without a map, good luck! Haha. Actually, just start in the Piazza Mercantile and it's in the alleys behind the pizza shops near the lion-headed looking fountain. If you find the small church, bear left through its alleys. If you can see the outer gates from the Piazza, turn left into the alleys while looking up for the wooden signs that say La Uascezze. When you arrive, you have the option to try and decipher the menu, or you can splurge like a tourist and let the waiter suggest for you. (If you look very touristy, they send their best English speaking head waiter dude it seems.) All we had was a 6-course tasting of their appetizers, and we were done for! (I mean, we had been snacking on Neapolitan pizzas the whole drive over...) Here is where I've had pretty much the best burrata mozzarella of my life and a number of other hot and cold apps that made me too full to remember to track down all the translations of the ingredients. Had we had more of an appetite, I would have loved to dine longer. But the travel had begun to wear down on our minds and bodies. The only blemish of this place was my order of the local white wine. This was raved about on TripAdvisor, etc., but I thought the glass I had was terrible. Worst white wine I have EVER tasted. The memory of the grape's smell is giving me nightmares as I type. I don't know what we wrong there, but it was a far cry from my dream of lovely Italian nightcap at the end of a tiring day of driving. By all other accounts, add this to your list of Bari stops if you're a bit of an adventurous foodster.

You know how you get into a routine when you are at home of going to the same places over and over…read moreagain. We are like that a little bit when we travel, and Bari is no different. We have found one place in particular that we've been to for lunch or dinner six times in the 11 days we've been here. Not last night, and boy are we glad we went to La Cecchina, it was possibly the best meal we have had here in Italy. We heard it was a busy place so we got there a couple of minutes prior to them opening, and we were already third in the queue. By 8:30 the place was jammed. After finishing our dinner and leaving at 10:20 we knew why the place is busy. Our opening dish is one we've had before, Orecchiette al ragu con bracioletta which is the famous local pasta with braised meat in a ragu sauce which was outstanding. The chew of the pasta coupled with the rich sauce and the braised beef was outstanding. They did bring us the wrong first, initially they set down Misto Frito which looked outstanding and has us planning another trip to try that. No easy task to get the lovely K to try fish, especially away from home, so dinner was already a win in my mind. The Secondi we chose was Filetto de Maialino con fiche secchi, vincotto e gelato al parmigiana. Pretty wordy stuff for pork tenderloin with figs and a parmigiana gelato. The combination of all the contents of the dish was absolutely amazing. It's something we will try to copy when we get home, but I doubt we'll do it justice. The figsthemselves along with the Demi glacé, sage and the gelato were unbelievably good together along with perfectly cooked pork. Good thing we didn't discover the place the first night we got here, we would have missed out on so many other outstanding places. One of my workmates said the food on this side of Italy wasn't up to snuff compared to the west coast. I'd have to respectfully disagree, the food in Bari and Lecce have been amazingly fantastic.

We couldn't decipher the menu as it was in Italian, we looked forever, then our waiter asked us if he could help. We agreed, and just let him bring out food. It was amazing ! The salmon, the octopus, the string burrata, the bread, clams, prawn, local wine, beer, cheese, amazing. We were in the front part of the restaurant, and around 9 many locals started showing up. The mood lightened, but we were having the time of our lives just trusting the waiter. The restaurant was well lit and a bit sterile, but oh my. The food and the service amazing, and the price unbeatable! The best value ever. We can't wait to get back to Bari to see what treasures they serve us next time. Well done !

It was really nice and dry. Went well with our pasta (pizza wasn't available at that time). We each got separate dishes. Spaghetti with becon (prosciutto), lobster and noodles and tomato cream sauce. All three were delicious and prices were really reasonable. 7€ for a bottle of wine and about 9€ per dish. He also gave us green olives and we tried a pizza type bread. All very yummy. If going again I would try 2 or 3 appetizers and split a meal with a friend. All in all in was a great meal - happy we stumbled in!

This is a hidden gem and a must dine …read more.. We visit Bari every year or so and on this visit we found this tiny restaurant near our rental. The prices were amazing - 8 euro for a full meal. Peroni beer and olives was the first course then followed by bruschetta (wonderful), a cheesy bread and 14? Pizza options . Every person gets their own pizza... and they weren't small pizzas either nor plain. My husband ordered a burrata and ham pie that was outstanding. My daughter ordered a vegetable pie with sausage but turned out to be hot dog (hmmm ?) and I ordered a delicious eggplant, squash and whatever other fresh veggies they happened to have around pie. As we are sitting there, the one fellow is slicing the fresh meats... the restaurant is beyond capacity and people are waiting outside and I can hear polish, Italian, British English and our own Itanglish languages flowing through the air. After the pie (which none of us could finish but they boxed up), we got a shot of limoncello and delicious vanilla sorbetto... (I mixed it ... it was really amazing.) If you visit Bari, please give this place a try. No regrets. Just get there by opening time as this establishment opens up and gets filled immediately. There's another 12 euro option that looked amazing with additional food but we couldn't eat all of that. (Although it looked like they left the limoncello bottle on the table.....) Great place!

Honestly I love this place for the experience. You sit down and semi-angry Italian men throw food in front of you for what seems like forever, and everything so delicious and freshly made. All you have to do is pick your pizza and whether or not you want antipasti, and if you don't want antipasti then don't bother coming here. My favorite pizza was the Krakow because of the speck and fresh creamy cheese. The atmosphere is definitely lacking but you get what you pay for, or in this case, more. You won't get a more authentic experience for your money in Bari.
