Milk is genius in picking apart all the ugliest and most unflattering silhouettes from the runway--voluminous balloon dresses, remember? And the "hottest" (trendiest) labels--I believe they call this "minimalist chic" which in fact is a piece of fabric sewn to a smaller piece of fabric, worn over your head with a $350 price tag. I can see how rich folks can buy their overpriced, ugly "designer" clothing here, this is where all of it can be found. The salespeople don't care about you either, well, unless you were some sort of Mischa Barton or out-of-work celebrity who graced the covers of tabloid magazines for a couple months. I bought 2 notepads here. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the designers they carry at Milk, but the merchandise is just flat and unexciting. She spoke with me for almost an hour, just uplifting me and encouraging my desires to become an entrepreneur. She has an infectious laugh, like the girlfriend you've known for years. She gives back to the community, especially women & other black owned business....that's an example to follow. This store is arranged like no other store in the mall. It resembles a boutique you would find in Century City or Beverly Center. I found great tops, a few jackets, the best fitting pants, a few cute heels, and earrings. I love everything I purchased! My first visit to Virgo was great. Leo was working that day, and he was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. I left with a very positive impression of the store. However, my subsequent visits, when the owner was present, were completely different. The first time, I visited with a friend. He was browsing a rack located in the back of the store near the dressing room when the owner abruptly snapped at him, saying, "These are not for sale yet." Her tone felt aggressive and dismissive. Later, after I had tried on a few items and was browsing the same rack, she spoke to me much differently and told me to let her know if I wanted to try anything from it. After hearing about my friend's interaction, we decided to leave. My final visit was even more uncomfortable. I had stopped in while out for a walk and wasn't feeling my best physically that day. I was quietly browsing when the owner approached me and, in an aggressive manner, asked if I was okay because my "energy was off." I was caught off guard and paused for a moment before explaining that I wasn't feeling well physically. Instead of leaving it there, she continued questioning me about my energy. The interaction felt intrusive and inappropriate, especially since I was simply trying to browse the store in peace. At that point, I decided to leave. Before doing so, I told her that she was being rude and projecting assumptions onto me simply because I was quiet. She seemed to insinuate that there was something wrong with me based solely on my demeanor, which made for a very uncomfortable customer experience. The entire interaction was strange and unnecessary. Unfortunately, she gives off the impression that everyone must be aware that she's the owner, and that attitude comes across in her interactions with customers. It's disappointing because the store itself has potential, and my experience with Leo showed how welcoming it can be. However, based on my experiences with the owner, I will not be returning. She then quickly disclosed that she was the owner of vintage clothes shop in Silverlake and to stop by and she would 'hook me up'. We exchanged information and kept in touch...and, no, I never did go into the shop before I met her again in person on the westside (Yes, I admit that I'm a sheltered Santa Monican... going east of the 405 can be terrifying :) ). Anywho, she knew that I was a musician and offered to style me for my next show with vintage (not my usual thing); I just needed to come into the shop and she'd take care of the rest...I ended up taking her up on her offer. I went into the shop and was BLOWN AWAY by the look and feel of the shop. (To be honest my first reaction was 'this is gonna be spendy') So, when Terri wasn't looking I checked out a price tag and was pleasantly surprised to find a great deal for an awesome hand-picked dress. And, shortly after couldn't help but notice (it's the bargain shopper in me)the $5 trunk in the back of her shop. It was filled to the BRIM with treasure! A multitude of beautiful, colorful, mint-condition scarves, some tanks, dresses, belts...a great bikini top... More info: Come to Mama also has hand-made overdye slips and corsets... REALLY kewl chunky-funky jewlery (my favorite thing and the shop next door 'Hung on You' has the most excellent feather earrings)...the scarves are GREAT for headwraps...purses and shoes that no one else has, with almost a 'punk rock' vintage look in mind (not that I know...ha ha). To round this out... I have since changed my entire style and image to a vintage classy but sexy style. Terri has been so lovely as to style me on several occasions and somehow can size-up a piece hand it to me...and it fits PERFECTLY. And, I've seen her in action in the store with other clients and customers. She's very gracious and has a light, loving spirit...stemming somewhere from the 60's or 70's I would imagine ;). She is also straight forward about what Does, and DOESN'T look good on a lady. (My pet peeve is when someone is working on comission and will sell you anything even if it's not flattering.) So I randomly discovered this shop at the Sunset Junction this year. It was nearing the end of night one and I was taking a break from the Yelp booth and thought I'd stretch my legs a bit and saunter about. Upon walking in, I was delighted at the really cute selection of vintage lingerie, dresses, skirts, and SHOES. I, of course, B-lined for this adorable pair of patchwork Kenzie's (not vintage, but looked very retro) and low and behold they were just my size. Yay! As I was sitting there trying them on, I noticed that the store had one of our Yelp fans up above their scarf case and I thought, Yay, how awesome! They are supportin Yelp, even better! I then went up to the front to pay for my purchase and the space cadet working here, who is also the owner, is really flustered and wandering around the near empty store, until a group of her friends and/or regulars walk in and they say, "Can we use the bathroom" to which she says, "Of course! Go on in!" She then turns around and comes to the register and starts ringing me up. I remark on the Yelp fan and tell her that's really cool of her to support us and I tell her I work with Yelp. As she's ringing up my $52.00 purchase, I kindly and politely ask her if I could possibly use her restroom, please. She says, "No, sorry, I can't let anyone use it." I look at her like, c'mon, you just let 4 people go and use it? Are you seriously going to say that with a straight face? The girls then come out of the back area and say, "thanks for letting us use your bathroom, take care girl" etc, etc. I then look at her, with with my purchase already rung up and say to her, again, very politely, "Really? I did just buy something..." To which she says, "No, we don't have a restroom." Now, this just really pissed me off....yes, every pun intended...but seriously, i am a paying customer, I am polite, I am asking her nicely and she is still saying no. It would have been one thing if I hadn't seen the other girls go in or even understandable if she was an employee and the owner said, Don't let anyone use the bathroom during the Junction. i would have totally understood and respected that, but she was THE owner and for her to let them go right in front of me and then pull that bullsh*t with me was just lame! So while the store has some cute stuff, I just didn't think that was very cool of her. It's not like I was some drunk and belligerent party goer trashing her place in the middle of a packed store, i was a vintage seeking customer who loves to support local shops, purchasing something from her at a slow time in the evening. Whatevs lady, hope your bullsh*t reasoning was worth it.
