FLAMENCO TUESDAYS! On the second Tuesday of each month, Soleil Rouge has a Spanish flamenco dancer…read moreand singer perform in the basement level. I am not at all familiar with flamenco, and absolutely terrified of dancing. So I come with some co-workers under the strict prereq that they are in no circumstances to try to get me out of my seat. So when I see that the basement floor is half the size of the upper floor and the room is scattered with small backless stools and low tables, my first thought is "this better be a short performance, those seats look horribly uncomfortable." We get a couple of bottles of wine, some tapas, and I settle myself down in an uncomfortable circle only a foot or so above the floor. And then someone starts singing. It's unfamiliar to me, and his intensity is a bit overwhelming for my demure Asian disposition :-P. And then the dancer starts to clap in such rhythm that I didn't know human hands could keep. My eyes are completely locked on his lean, sinewed arms. The music gets more and more intense, his clapping gets more and more rhythmical, and then he stands up with the posture of either a toreador or a french butler. His wooden heel slams on the floor, and he sets off into these liquid motions that he must have been born with. What a sight to see, the interplay of such passionate music, calculated but effortless motions, piercing eyes locking on the gaze of individual patrons, all without a hint of a smile. It was my first flamenco experience, but those much more knowledgeable informed me that he is, in fact, one of the best dancers they've seen. As the night wore on, the intensity gave way to friendly celebration, with people getting up to dance, and me forgetting the discomfort of the chairs. If you love flamenco or are unfamiliar with it (there seems to be no middle ground), second Tuesdays at Soleil Rouge is a must-see. The performance begins at 8, and try to get settled in your seats on time. If you are noisy, be warned, you will be shushed.

Very disappointed- made a reservation for wine and dinner for the flamanco event. The event starts…read moreat 7pm, we made reservation at 7pm (specifically confirmed sit next to the flamanco floor) and we showed up at 7pm. Then they told us "it is crazy down there. It is full. However we can seat you upstairs next to the TV screen." Excuse me - we don't make a reservation and to sit next to a TV screen and miss the live scene. If i want to watch on a screen, i can watch comfortably at home on iPad and sip my own good wine. If you cannot honor a reservation, please frame the whole thing to be first come first serve, we would have came earlier and secure a place next to the event floor. What can I say - bad expectation management and because of this we have to scramble and find alternative plans on a Saturday evening. You can do better.

Not Le Bernadine expensive but more like $25 per tapas plate expensive... so definitely a smart Michelin's Star gateway experience and well worth it. It is a very casual and friendly environment. The staff is very attentive and forthcoming with wine suggestions. The wine selection, albeit a little limited, is formidable... had two different red wines and they were both excellent. The tapas were also fantastic.. they had a few token Spanish tapas that were very well executed and some more creative interpretations. We shared the ham croquetttes (which rivaled my Spanish aunts croquettes... I hope she never reads this), the pulpo gallego (very tender and well seasoned), the piadine (very fresh) and the gyoza on special menu. All were very delicious!

Thing is, for a Michelin star restaurant, expect more than cold, chewy (inedible) filet and cold bone marrow. Note, when Zi got served at 9, when most guests were gone or leaving, you'd think the kitchen had caught up and my food would be warm. Cozy place, good wine, but the food has to match. Give it a try. I didn't complain but can make better at home.
