La Sierra University is a beautiful campus full of wonderful, kind and diverse people. I would recommend anyone to study, visit or work here as it is truly a life changing experience. With that being said, there are several areas that could be improved upon. Here's an insider scoop of what to expect when you're here. 1. As a student you may experience long processing / response time for any academic requests. You may also experience long queues for the cafe, but waiting in line may give you time to make friends with others waiting in line. You will come to realize that the people you need talk to are sometimes hard to track down and have limited time for you. But they are super kind once you do manage to find them. 2. The campus is classified as an arboretum (tree sanctuary) so there are many birds that leave droppings and the trees themselves cause everything underneath them to turn black with heavy soot and grime. I noticed there was very little attention given to seating areas and most of them are all terribly filthy. For a university where their students are paying upwards of $50,000 annually to attend you would think this would be a top priority to be regularly maintained daily. I took my upon myself to bring my pressure washer in once a week and clean some areas. (I attached before and after pictures so you can see just how rundown things were getting.) 3. If you're planning to work here someday make sure that you're mindful and make it a point to always be hyper politically correct. If you send an email that could be perceived by someone as even slightly "offensive" they will promptly terminate you without warning and send you home. 4. If you need technical support from their IT department as a student or employee expect long wait times or even little to no support. Something is going terribly wrong in that department and should be looked into. 5. Many false promises. One example, The president told me he was going to buy me lunch and simply never did. It's the little things. Overall, I think the good aspects of this school outweigh the bad and it's a great place to connect with highly educated people and learn about their Seventh Day Adventist culture. I hope there will be a plan put into place to make sure seating areas never look like these pictures again as I found it to be terribly shameful for them to be left like that. It's more important now than ever before for Universities like La Sierra to thrive and grow. read more

Still a small town, that is what Riverside is. But it also seeks culture. La Sierra University, founded in 1922, is a small campus but beautiful in every sense. It is a private institution with a religious base, Seventh Day Adventist, that offers undergrad and graduate studies. The campus is lush and well maintained, beautiful for a day walk even though you may not even attend classes here. Within, and the reason we came, is a small music dept. They offer many concerts throughout the year. We came for a cello concert last evening, Wednesday, performed at the Hole Memorial Auditorium on campus. It is not a particularly gorgeous venue, but it is classic and lovely in its own way, with Art Deco design inside and out, simple stained glass windows, and impressive pipes displayed on stage for the pipe organ, dark hardwood floors. Standard vintage auditorium seating includes a balcony that starts about halfway back. Since we were not students or staff, our entry fee for this Resident Artist Series was $10. However I noticed they have an entire schedule of *free* concerts available in the months of May and June, including a jazz concert on the greens in late May of this year, 2015. Great for families, bring your lounge chairs and picnic dinner and soak up the culture. My only regret, as the concert itself was exceptional, was the lack of attendance. There were less than two dozen attendees, sad since the artist and her accompanist were clearly very accomplished musicians. This and the other events need more community support, and can be a wonderful evening out for little to no cost. I would encourage all who read this to look into supporting their music program in any way they can. Music soothes the savage soul, right? Another feature of the University, free to all, is a small museum, the World Museum of Natural History. It is open on Saturdays, but I believe not every Saturday, so check for times. There are glass cases outside the museum that can give you a taste of what can be expected inside. Since we have not visited this museum yet, I may be over stating, but even the collections in the glass cases were interesting to see. Without entering, you can also see the Guinness Book of Record's World's largest Kimodo Dragon, stuffed, and a hefty buffalo. Cool? I think so. read more

Disclaimer: I do attend this University. Overall, La Sierra University is an adequate University. I take classes here to get my MA in Counseling. I appreciate that classes are in the afternoons (4-650) (7-950) because I work earlier in the day. This campus is pretty and is built into the side of the hills. There are other La Sierra Campus' but for my review I'll focus on this one. The teachers and staff are the best at what they do and are able to blend their knowledge and expertise of the fields they are teaching with empathy and care for the students and where the future of those fields may be leading. They are approachable and they truly want you to succeed. My problems with La Sierra University is with the Administrative staff. I understand college is a business and there is money to be made but some of the choices made by those in leadership roles is baffling. Tuition prices continue to rise(understandably) and the administrative's in charge seem to be taking a bottom up approach. Students will be loyal to an extent but when you didn't go out of you way to make the experience special or show that you cared you can't expect much support(financially) from those same alumni in the future. I'll step off my soap box to say this, La Sierra University is a great University and I would recommend going here for your graduate degree. I can't, however, give the University 5 stars when the Administration in charge can't get out of their own way and realize they may be part of the problem and that the solution and way that La Sierra grows may include them not being in the picture. read more

A beautiful University. I come here to take my little sister to their music program. She studies with a personal 1 on 1 class once a week, and then they have these amazing quarterly contests showing off all the music student's talents they've been perfecting. **Side note, my sis is only 13 & is not attending this school; only their music program (which is put on by the music major students). However, I wanted to share that all my experiences on campus and with students have always been outstanding. All staff is very kind and accommodating, and students are friendly & professional. Concerts put on by the music students are typically free, which is nice to bring the whole family. All in all, if you have children/teenagers with musical talent and are looking for a good outlet for them, may it be singing, piano, guitar, violin, etc etc-- La Sierra U has an amazing program and you will not regret it. read more

The LSU Adult Evening College program (Division of Continuing Studies) was great. The counselors for the program were wonderful. I took some classes on the main campus, but the program is at their satellite offices right next to the main campus. Overall, it was a great program for working adults (it is for people 22 years old and up) and I enjoyed all my classes there. The professors were all great people with an understanding of what the adult students of today are facing when going back to school. The classes were one night a week, so I was able to take two classes a week with no problem, and still get a lot out of the program. read more

My daughter graduated from La Sierra with a BA in Sociology in June 2014. Although her FIRST SEMESTER did not go "swimmingly" she went to a JR. college for a couple of years, and then returned to get her degree. We are Seventh-Day Adventists, and my daughter did go to Thunderbird Adventist Academy in Scottsdale, AZ for high school and El Dorado Adventist Academy in Placerville for middle school years. The professors and administrators and the fact they are a PRIVATE university, able to make their own policies and procedures make all the difference in the world. They have a Professor April Summit who is an administrator and with prayer, and individual attention and consideration, La Sierra gives students unsurpassed individual consideration, and goes above and beyond the call of duty in all areas. It's beautiful, safe, cutting edge education in many diverse areas, has a music program that is unsurpassed and a sports program also ( my daughter was not in either). I felt assured my only child was getting the best liberal arts education available anywhere and was safe, respected and cared for while attending school there. WELL worth the tuition! read more
