Idk who does the hiring for these company's but they love to put people in the driver seats of their company vehicles and let them drive like complete buffoons. Buffoon. The driver today decided it was a good idea to completely stop his truck in the middle of a merging freeway entrance off of soquel because he was probably on his Instagram feed instead of paying attention then when he realized he was throwing his truck into possibly oncoming traffic(which there was none) and another lane he stops completely with no regard for the traffic behind him. Then once we're on the free way he throws his arm out the window like he knows what he's doing and that multiple cars didn't just honk TF at him for driving like an idiot. I get yielding to oncoming traffic, like one should, but wtf is yielding your truck gonna do when your in the middle of the road blocking any oncoming traffic from even moving passed you?!?! I doubt these guys even care how your trees come out with the way the company lets these types of guys behind their company vehicles and laugh while they drive away from a multiple car pile up they almost created. read more

I'm being generous, bumping their stars from 4 1/2 to 5. Based only on failure to completely clean up their debris (see photos) and a little incomplete understanding by the workers of some their tasks, La Selva gets my rating of 4 1/2. Overall, the manager Nick and tree climbers Christian and Jesus get 5 stars for their tree pruning. Ask for them. The first problem is the debris. I saw one tree whose debris was not completely picked up prior to the workers leaving. Nick told them to clean it up and it was done well. The other areas I missed on our walk-through because I focused on the tree pruning itself. Afterwards, I found that at least three of the areas they pruned were incompletely cleaned up; one other section I haven't had time to look at. The photos show most of the debris. It represents 20 minutes or so of my time. Apparently, the workers cleaned up mostly by using a large blower. There remained a significant amount for me to clean up. There were at least three pruning jobs that the workers didn't know or had forgotten about. They were done well when Nick told them what had been missed. I had Nick add on one small job, his cost being $100. Since I was there, I watched the job being done. It took 10 minutes or less, with there being one trimmer and one foreman looking on. I thought $100 was excessive and Nick reduced the cost satisfactorily. Before deciding what company to use, I requested an itemization of the estimate of cost--by each area and tree, when that was appropriate. This might seem standard, but one outfit told me it was unusual, said they would do that, and then did not. It helps to have that information, because it could lead to negotiation about the cost. It also is helpful to have several itemized estimates, for the same reason. Nick was very responsive to texts and phone calls. He also had a detailed memory or notes that allowed him to communicate well with me and his workers. Despite the irritations of incomplete clean-up and workers needing to be supervised, I highly recommend La Selva. read more

I hired La Selva Tree care January 2024 to remove a large redwood tree that involved crane service. My main concern was if the crane would crack the concrete driveway considering the amount of weight. The sales rep gave me the contact information for the crane company they use as a subcontractor. I was able to get ahold of the crane company "Arbor Lyft" and the owner assured me that his 6x6 wood pads would be all the protection needed to prevent any damage to the driveway. When they brought the crane over they placed one of the support legs on the edge of the driveway with a scrawny piece of plywood beneath that overlapped the concrete and the dirt (pic 1). This caused the outer band of the driveway to crack (pic 2). Long story short about 4-6 months after the job they finally sealed the crack in the outer band of the driveway to hopefully prevent any further damage from moisture. The company had to be contacted multiple times for them to make any effort in fixing the damage. Although I appreciate the fact they sealed the crack it still didn't bring the driveway to its original condition. Another issue I had was the crane service was in the contract as a fixed fee and the email prior to the job stated the crane would be there for 2 days (Pic 3). Day 1 of crane service didn't go well as the crane operator loaded the log transportation truck incorrectly causing a delay. The logs were so jammed in the transport truck that the driver couldn't unload and had to drive all the way back to the job to have it reloaded. This caused the crane to be on job for a second day which was to be expected but the desk lady at La Selva Tree care tried to claim they would now need to charge a higher final price (pic 4) and the original bid was for only 1 day crane service. Not to mention the contract was ALL FLAT FEES. There was no mention of them being able to charge more money in the end. Also the subcontractor who transported the logs ended up charging full amount for his hourly rate even though he had to make an extra trip due to loading error. What a mess this company caused, never hiring or ever recommending to my worst enemy. read more

We live in a third floor condo that had 150 year old acacia tree in the small grass area at the end of the driveway. The tree was one or two stories taller than our four story condo building and had some limbs brushing the building. We recently learned that the tree was rotting inside, though it looked healthy and green. We have been watching the crew from La Selva Tree Services from our bedroom windows. These men really are masters at their work. They have all the big side limbs of the tree off now and are about at our third floor level (our bedroom windows) on the trunk. As they bring the height of the tree down slice by slice now, we can see the rotted part in the middle of the trunk. (I am very glad that the tree is coming down in these professionals' hands and not in a storm.) As they move down to the wide base of the tree, the man doing the sawing in the tree has switched from slicing it like thick slices of bologna to cutting off hunks at an angle. This is the 2nd time we've used LSTC. Last year they removed an avocado tree and cut some limbs from a large holly tree to allow a new fence installation. Great Job! Yesterday, they removed a very old, gigantic ivy hedge (6ft thick, 8 ft high, ~80 ft long). They brought in two teams...one to cut, chip and haul away the old hedge and another to grind the remaining stumps. There was an old wooden fence buried within the hedge. Job done and hedge gone! These guys are real pros. Great experience from start to finish on our fire defensive space project. We needed a mature maple that had grown over our roof removed as well as several very large redwood limbs about 50ft+ off the ground. La Selva did our neighbor's property and came highly recommended by them. An estimator immediately responded to our inquiry and came to our place a few days later. Their pricing was VERY fair. Upon our bid approval they scheduled for one week out. A five person crew arrived and immediately got busy. The real reason these guys are pros is their focus on protecting our home from damage while ensuring the personal safety of themselves and others. It was impressive how well they climb trees (fully harnessed of course)! They used roping techniques to control the falling tree sections in a very tight space between our home and two fence lines. They brought a trailer chipper for most of the debris and hauled out the trunk sections of the maple. As they had to block a traffic lane with their chipper, they provided traffic control which eased one of my major concerns. And BTW, I did confirm on www.cslb.ca.gov that their license and bond are current. I hope those who read my review have the same positive experience. read more

What a nightmare. This all started when they formed a contract with my mother stating that for 12K they would do as much work in her yard until she's happy or she doesn't pay a penny. My mom agreed if they would finish the work before the rains came (before the end of January). They missed some appointments, showed up unannounced on other days (which forced her to unexpectedly miss some appointments because now she was forced to stay home and supervise La Selva's Tree Care crew) and then they disappeared for weeks at a time. They did not finish the work before the rains came. Did they do some work? Yes. They were good at cutting some brush. They did trim some trees. However, they did not entirely listen to her. They cut a tree that she asked them not to cut. Refused to cut trees that she asked them to (stating that they worth money but that wasn't up to them to decide what stays and what goes). She wanted to keep the wood chips from her trees to make paths in her yard but they took her took off with her chips. Even though they offered to bring loads of other people's chips, she wanted her own and the point is, they didn't respect her wishes. Different crews came out each time. My mom would tell one crew one thing and then have to tell another crew the next time. They left stumps that were tripping hazards. Speaking of hazards, workers didn't have the proper safety gear (no gloves, no goggles). She passed out band-aids to workers and even leant one a long sleeve shirt. They used the cement bench that I bought her as their saw sharpening area, cracked the bench and then tried to cover it up by dumping some debris on it. When she confronted them about it, they said that they didn't (my mom saw them doing this!) They left branches on her roof, her neighbor's roof and in the plants, leaving my nearly 80 year old mom to clean up. Then Gonzalo shows up at my mother's house unannounced, which not only unprofessional but scared her and intimidated her. He wanted to do more work but it's the end of March now. The birch trees (among others) that needed to be trimmed are no longer dormant. She offered to do a partial pay and then come back in fall. They said no, they wanted to do it now. She didn't want to compromise the health of the trees that she wanted trimmed, that should not be cut right now, so she said no. Where I get involved with all of this is I spend a lot of time going back and forth to my mom's house. I know her yard VERY well. I saw it before they started work and she gave me the walk through last weekend. I have also hired tree services for my own house so I know what jobs are worth. When this conflict came up, my mom asked me what to do. I told her to be fair and pay them for the work that they did do. I gave her a number based on my experience, which was generous because people in San Jose generally charge a little more than Santa Cruz. She tried but they demanded payment for 80% of the job when that wasn't the amount of work that was done. He wanted 8K for only 5 days worth of work ($1600 a day) that was sporadically spread out over a period of 3 months. The job that wasn't complete, wasn't done properly, they abandon the job for long periods of time without communication, they stole her wood chips, broke her personal property, and they left a mess everywhere. No way! Try half that or less. I personally tried to negotiate with Gonzalo on the phone, sighting grievances with the work but he said he only wanted to meet in person. I said no because he was even trying to tell me what my mom should want (instead of listening to her wishes) and sighted 25 years in business as his excuse. If this is true, he should know better and shouldn't be doing any of this. He wasn't listening to her, he wasn't listening to me, and he wasn't being reasonable. I offered him a more than fair price and he said no, he wanted his 80%. Technically, according to the contract, she should not owe him anything since the company did not live up to the terms of the agreement, and that was stipulated in the contract. It has escalated to the point where we are now referring this case to the state licensing board for mediation. Maybe we should also escalate this to OSHA too. And since you are hitting her with outrageously trumped up billing charges, maybe my mom should send you a bill you for her services as your on the job supervisor, your clean up crew, and for her expertise as a nurse since she acted in that capacity for your ill equipped work crew? As for showing up unannounced, I'm very protective of my mother and have no tolerance for bullying. If anyone from this company continues to intimidate and harass my mother, I will not hesitate to call law enforcement. Trying to take advantage of and intimidate a senior citizen? Not cool! read more
