We hired K&D Landscaping for a large front and backyard landscaping project. Before making our decision, we obtained several bids that varied significantly in price. K&D's proposal was the most expensive, but it included a landscape architect and project management. We had also seen other projects they had completed and believed their reputation justified the higher cost. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet those expectations. The project was originally estimated to take approximately 2 1/2 months but ultimately took about 9 months to complete. Because of the issues we experienced during the project, we filed a complaint with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and participated in their mediation process. Through CSLB mediation, we reached a settlement with K&D for more than $20,000. In the first week of the K&D contract in our development, Manny, the K&D foreman, met with my wife and I, and our landscape committee chair. We outlined the extensive trimming and cutting back we required. Manny was very knowledgeable, articulate, agreeable and easy to deal with. The next day a crew, including Alex and Arturo, came and worked dilligentlly to accomplish the work that had been agreed upon. As someone with first hand knowledge, K&D is not worth the hype. Everything on their website was designed by other Landscape Designers and their in-house design is average at best. What they claim to provide is over rated and over priced! There are several other design/build companies in the area that will provide the same, if not better, product at nearly half the cost. They are doing a job next door and the employees have their music loud and start screaming to each other, and screaming to the music. I understand the need, doing mundane work, HOWEVER, I would not employ people that do not know how to behave in public on a job. This would NEVER be happening nor allowed over the hill in Atherton or Hillsborough, and certainly not San Francisco. Shame on management for not teaching your employees proper behavior. Although I had high expectations because of their reputation, I was quite disappointed with their job to replant several beds in our garden. The staff were friendly and easy to work with but poor plant quality and inadequate soil preparation have resulted in many plants dying initially, and continuing to do so. They told me they would email some internal team and that I'd expect a phone call or email that afternoon. Well, that never happened. Why would a company waste my time (and theirs) by making an appointment, coming to my home, taking measurements, but never providing an actual estimate? I waited 3 1/2" months (I know trades are very busy these days) and finally gave up. Every time I inquired, I would get a response about how busy they were, they were out of town, etc., etc. My neighbor also had them come out for landscaping bid. Same thing happened. I see this company everywhere, but this week got to experience them up close and personal. They handle the landscaping at the business where I recently began working. The grounds are always impeccably maintained. This week while I was out for a break, their trucks were here. I passed several of their employees and was greeted with a friendly smile and greeting by each of them. They were courteous and patient as I observed them waiting for other employees to clear an area before turning on blowers, etc. Their crew was thorough and detail oriented and seemed to have a smile for everyone that passed by.
