Located nestled between residential homes on the outer edge of Colonia Americana, the front of the building is unassuming, aside from the bold signage spelling out the name: Rayuela in big red letters. As you enter the space, you feel the allure and charm of the place. Your eyes are directed past the intimate tables in the front, and toward the long stretched bar. The warm lighting and french doors in the back seduce you to venture outside to a small patio. The place has old world charm, those that you would expect to find in Latin America or Europe. The colonial buildings that surround the neighborhood and decor transplant you into another era. Like the wine they curate, their are roots grounded in this place. I love that they offer wines from Valle De Guadalupe and other regions of Mexico, despite being a Spanish restaurant. The tapas were bursting with flavor. The Artichoke dish was my favorite, blending sweet and savory flavors. But you'd have it easy selecting something good at this place, every dish we had was memorable.

My wife really enjoyed her negroni and I challenged the bartender to make me a sweet drink. Even though he replied, "We don't really do sweet here," he made me a refreshing bramble. 2) Service: It's superb- attentive and genuine. 3) Space: It's dimly lit with bar seating and many tables and couches throughout the space. Owned and ran by three young local guys gives it a fun local vibe. I spent hours enjoying their wine and food while a local traveling pop up vintage jazz band played a few classics for us. The music in the restaurant this particular evening went from modern lounge to 1940's French jazz. I felt I was back in Boudreaux France at times. Great fun and plenty to chose from on the wine list. The service wasn't great--slow and inattentive--and the food really missed the mark. It felt like every dish swung to one extreme or the other. The potato appetizer was way too spicy and overly seasoned to the point where it overpowered everything else. The prime rib was a major letdown: overcooked and somehow completely lacking seasoning, which is unforgivable for a dish like that. The mole with the short rib had good flavor, but once again the meat was overcooked, making it tough and disappointing. All in all, the experience was less than meh. With inconsistent food, poor service, and only decent drinks to show for it, this isn't a spot I'd return to or recommend.
