While staying in Verona, we found a family-owned restaurant that served typical Veronese food. It…read morewas a white linen joint that didn't blink at our four kids rolling in at 7 PM. We really liked the food, and we loved the staff: mom and daughter were in the kitchen, dad was behind the bar and pouring the wine, and son was waiting tables, translating English, French, and German (that we heard) into Italian. Plus, he has a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor. We decided to go back the next night because (a) we really liked the food and wanted to try more of the menu, (b) we wanted some of the other family to experience the joint and (c) we weren't enamored with the other options in Verona. When we walked in, the son, Andrea, at first looked surprised and then got a huge grin on his face. We now felt like friends. The third night, we convinced the whole crew go back to the restaurant. When we walked in, he welcomed us warmly until we said, "28?" Fortunately, two of the families were unable to join us, so we only took up about a quarter of the restaurant. We tasted everything on the menu, including the specials. It was all great. By the third night, dad was actually smiling when he came around to help the Americans with their drinks. On our way out, mom and daughter came out of the kitchen to say goodbye, and Andrea gave us a hug. We now felt like family. If you ever find yourself in Verona, I highly recommend this place. We will certainly be going back.

It was quiet when we arrived at noon and then filled up quite a lot by the time we departed. Clearly, a restaurant for the locals. First course, a big pile of a pasta called "bigolini" which I've not seen before. It is like thick spaghetti with a rough surface. That is needed because the sauce on it was quite thick and another interesting taste - nettles. Definitely different. Second course, risotto made with a red wine reduction. Very flavorful and rich and the pasta was perfectly al dente. We'll definitely need to return to here for dinner! [Review 16980 overall - 185 in Italy - 496 of 2022.]

The restaurant is very cute (free WiFi) and homey feeling with an exposed brick interior and interesting decoration choices throughout the space. If you're so inclined there's also and outdoor patio area. Maybe we just ordered poor menu items but the food was underwhelming and not particularly standout. For our anti pasta course we went with the cured meat trio with polenta. The meats weren't particularly good and combined with the bland polenta it just wasn't a good combo. For our primi pasta course we had the bigoli in a horse (yes horse) bolognese sauce. Of our three dishes this was the best. For our main meat course with did horse cheeks braised in an Amarone wine sauce with polenta. I didn't like the polenta any better on our second dish and the cheek just didn't do it for me. I ended up leaving the bulk of the dish uneaten. All in all-maybe I just ordered poorly but I if I ever make it back to Verona this spot will be a pass for me.

Osteria del Bugiardo was located in a good area so we made our way over to this wine bar. Service (2.5/5): Confusing system. There was a wait for a table but no hostess outside. We eventually talked to someone and she said that while there's no list, she will remember our faces and let us know when a table is ready. Not the most efficient system but we waited about 10 minutes to be seated at the bar. Our waiter took care of us pretty well after we got in. Ambiance (3.5/5): Your typical wine bar. Nice ambiance. The only downside for me is that seating at the bar consisted of bar stools. Without back support. Which I have always hated and which hurts my back. It's also pretty tight in there when they're at capacity. Drinks (4/5): Since this is a wine bar, you know what to order. We had glasses of rose. Not the heaviest pour but the price was solid. If you're not looking for wine, they also have things like Aperol Spritz. Food (4/5): You won't find hearty fare here but you will be able to munch on a lot of small plates. I'm talking things like mini sandwiches, croquettes, meatballs, salads, etc. Which is exactly what we did. We shared a couple of tapas between the two of us. It was filling and did the job. I wasn't stuffed but it was good and on the healthier side. Overall: Osteria del Bugiardo is one of the most popular restaurants on Yelp in Verona and it's located in the heart of the city.
