We did a quick little breakfast trip across the border with my girlfriend and my dog and ended up at La Roca - such a beautiful spot. Walking in honestly feels like stepping into a hacienda. There's a gorgeous fountain in the center and a mix of seating areas - some more loungy if you're just having drinks, others perfect for coffee or a full breakfast. There's even an upper level with a bar-style balcony, which is where we sat, and it was such a great view. They are dog-friendly in the outdoor areas (I had mine in a stroller), and the staff could not have been more accommodating - they even helped me carry her up the stairs. Service overall was amazing. We had multiple servers checking on us, which just shows how well staffed and attentive they are, especially since it was pretty busy with the buffet crowd. We heard their buffet is really good, but we weren't quite that hungry, so we ordered off the menu. I got the huevos rancheros, and I'm not kidding - the beans alone made the whole trip worth it. I don't know what they're doing back there, but they need to keep doing it. The eggs and red sauce were also so good. My girlfriend got the chiles rellenos, and just watching her cut into them with that perfect cheese pull told me everything I needed to know - she confirmed they were delicious. The decor is beautiful and full of Mexican culture, the space feels really inviting, and overall it was just such a great experience. If you're in Nogales and want something nice without going too far into the city, this is literally right across the border and absolutely worth it. read more

I'm really unsure how to word this... On the one hand, I really enjoyed our walk across the border to experience the culture and food of Mexico, but to pay the prices charged by La Roca just does not sit well with me. I understand there is a "premium" applied by any business within walking distance of the US border, especially to the unaware tourists, but $73.00 for a lunch for two is just unfathomable. I'm not providing this review to dissuade anyone from eating at La Roca... just be aware that you aren't going to be paying street taco cart prices for your meal. We visited on Valentine's Day and I regretted not wearing at least a touch of red as soon as I entered since it seemed that was the theme for all the other clientele. Nonetheless, we were seated in the main dining room along with the live band and they were keeping the vibes lively! Our roving waiters brought out a large board menu in English since we could not get their QR codes to work on our phones. The menu options are plentiful! Almost too much to take in, but one of our waiters was mentioning the freshness of the sea bass tacos, so I opted for that while my partner went for the garlic chili shrimp. Of course I paired this with a Modelo Negra and it was so much more refreshing than the ones I get at home... I guess there's some truth to the old saying that the beer tastes different in the home country. The fresh pico was amazingly good with the house chips and we opted for a guacamole volcano. I probably should have chosen flour tortillas as the thin corn tortillas could not stand up to the pile of fish and toppings, but it was so delicious, and the small slices of lime on a separate plate really jazzed up the flavors on everything. We sat through three or four songs while enjoying our lunch date, then wandered back over to the US side of the border for a drive back. Well worth the trip... I jut wasn't prepared for the bill. I finally made it down to LaRoca! We went for the Sunday buffet. It was a great experience! There was guitar and mariachi music! There were a lot of staff refilling our coffees, taking our plates, and working in the buffet line. There was an omelet station, menudo and pozole with all the toppings, tamales, chilaquiles, beans that had an amazing char flavor, rice, and delicious beef stew with big chunks of meat and carrots, papas with crema and more! The inside is beautiful! It was busy, but we didn't have reservations, and got right in. Theres a meeting room, and some tables down a hall with windows. Theres a home store downstairs as well with beautiful decor and a mosaic wall thats a sight to look at! Great place to take out of town visitors, and great way to spend a Sunday morning! read more

Overall had an outstanding experience here! When I got here I was the only one so I literally got a private concert from their outstanding live performers! I requested a song Tragos Amargos and they played it beautifully. A bit of effort finding the restaurant, but once I did I walked into the most beautiful and elegant dining room. Tables were super fancy with red cloths and candles. The best service I've had yet in Nogales with very professional servers. The Mexican combination was delicious with a wide variety of flavors! My favorite was the chille rellenos and the cheese used. Chips and salsa were awesome. Watermelon margarita was strong but delicious- they didn't skimp out on the tequila! Beautiful well appointed space; the ambiance is upscale with plentiful white jacketed waitstaff understandably reserved but ready to serve. The food may be pricey for Mexico but the quality of ingredients and skills of the kitchen are notable. This is the perfect balance of upscale and delicious dining. We expect to be back again and again. From the US, the excursion across the border is worth the experience at this single restaurant. I went solo for lunch and the walk across the border was quick and uneventful. The ambiance and service didn't disappoint. Nor did the watermelon margarita or food. I had difficulty reading the menu because of their choice of colors on the prices. I did find it pricey and the waiters trying to rush me but I wanted to savor this experience and they accommodated. The inside artwork was vibrant, flashy and eye catching, as well as the imaginative patio decor. I brought in my own water and noticed the water came in bottles too. La Roca was an amazing experience. After driving down to the boarder from AZ and walking over to Mexico we walked a short distance to La Roca. When you walk in towards the courtyard you see it is actually built into the side of the mountain. The Courtyard was beautiful. They also had a nice little shops that sold artwork, household items, clothes and other small items. When we walked up the stairs into the restaurant, we were greeted by staff and taken to our table that was set for us (6 of us so we called ahead and made a reservation but I don't think it is necessary). The restaurant was full of colorful art and decor. You can actually see part of the mountain from inside. Staff were dressed and behaved very professionally . They were patient with me and my "self taught/still learning Spanglish" and most spoke English. I ordered the special which was the "Enchiladas de Camaron en Crema de chipotle" and an Arnold Palmer. We had chips and salsa and guacamole ordered for the table. Delicious! Everyone's meals looked so good, mine looked and smelled so good I forgot to take pictures ‍. I dived in head first and cleaned my plate. Its was 3 shrimp enchiladas covered in the crema, and a serving of seasoned rice. (I think it came with a side of beans but I requested no beans) I tasted mole sauce for the first time as we offered each other a taste of our different meals. I personally did not care for the mole but those that ate it on the regular said it was some of the best. I loved everything else I tasted. Overall this was a lovely experience. Should return to Nogales Mexico I will surely stop here again. read more

This place is so cute! It's built into the side of the mountain. When you walk in, the twinkling lights hanging from the ceiling make the whole place magical. The servers are all in white coats, and bring you a menu board. They are so friendly and helpful. Everyone there is so attentive and so kind! They place your napkin on your lap for you even! I ordered the shrimp tacos and my friend ordered the tacos carne. Mine were on soft corn tortillas and the shrimp were tossed in a spicy tomato sauce topped with fresh cabbage and some lime. Her tacos carne were on a crispy shell and the carne was grilled to perfection. We started off with the guacamole and it was freshly hand made for us!! Very creamy. What a fun adventure to Mexico we had. It was tough to find a place to find that had enough reliable reviews over the border for a day trip. This place looked good. When I first found it on Yelp - you got a free margarita with a Yelp check in - sadly no longer on the app. Sure sure this place is crawling with all the stuff you have to deal with in a Mexican restaurant (they came and ask to take your photo (for $5..EACH copy) they come by and play music (too loudly) at your table (and expect a tip)...Just go with it - you are in Mexico But we all had a few nice cocktails and a great meal. We started with a cheesy dip of some kind. Then I got the chicken mole which I loved. My man had one of the more expensive combo platters in the first column on the chalkboard menu (it is not listed as a "combo" but some kid of steak dish) - but really it is a combo of a steak, a relleno, some delightful combo of peppers (or maybe cactus) and onions in a cream sauce & an enchilada. We ordered two desserts, a pineapple Flan (my favorite) and the Mexican Delight - really an ice cream cone with dulche de leche and pecans. With so many great reviews I came with high expectations only to be disappointed. I have to say that the ambience was very nice. The service was good. The food very mediocre and price was expensive even if it were in the USA so for being in Mexico for mediocre Mexican food this was a huge disappointment. So for those that want the ambience and are willing to pay three times the expense to have it, this is your spot. Otherwise there are much better options in Nogales. I ordered the Salmon my mother in law ordered the enchiladas and my husband had fish tacos. My husband and I normally are vegetarian or at times pescatarian when vegetarian options are lacking. My salmon was dry. The green sauce was bland. I was pleased with in house tortilla chips and salsa but that was it. Lunch for three of us came to $100 US. read more

We decided to venture over the border into Nogales, which was a first time visit for us. We headed straight to the restaurant, up the stairs and whisked to a table by the exposed cave wall. The property looks like it could be anywhere in colonial Mexico, not a grimy border town. It has a nice curio shop and lovely bar and balcony areas. The Saturday we visited also had a baby shower in progress in the main room. There was a guitar singer adding to the relaxing festive vibe. The $5 margaritas were tasty, as well as the fresh guacamole y pico de gallo starter. The only drop in rating was due to constantly having to ask for more water refills. The red Chile chilequillas was heat hot and tasty. I think my husband liked the garlic shrimp. Overall the bread was good. Word to travelers, contact your bank even when traveling over the border. Some reason our Bank had no concept of where we were at, even after calling them to ok the charge. We ended up paying cash of $81 for 3 drinks, starter and entrees with tip and 16% federal tax. We came here for a wedding reception and it was such a magical night. The ambiance was set with the beautiful and rich tapestry of the rustic building, the hosts and servers were incredibly nice, professional, and, attentive and the food was delicious. Although the boiled chicken and veggies were average, the potatoes, chicken chimichangas and mountain of guacamole completely blew away our tastebuds. We started off the evening with a mariachi band in the foyer with tecate, water, juice or soda and eventually moved upstairs for the appetizers, entree, and open bar with herradura reposado. Delicious breakfast and dinner options. I tried the breakfast buffet and it was delicious (I recommend the chilaquiles, omelet station and fresh fruit). For dinner I tried the enmoladas which were sweet in flavor and loved it. One thing I would improve are the Tamarindo and Lime margaritas. I didn't expect the margaritas to be too small in size and super high sugar in flavor. Both margaritas did not taste fresh but it was still drinkable. If you're a tourist coming from Arizona, and you take the main pedestrian border crossing into Nogales - and, if you're not going further into Mexico, why drive? Leave your car at one of the parking lots around the end of I-19 - you'll see, at the exit of the pedestrian walk-through, a huge sign - in English - giving detailed directions to walk to this restaurant. It's just about the only sign in English you'll see that isn't on a pharmacy or a dentist's. And you'll need the directions, even though it's only about two blocks away. You need to go over the cross-border highway on a pedestrian overpass, then duck around a corner into a side street. (Contrary to some descriptions, it's not up a hill; it is, however, nestled into the base of a cliff.) However, while on top of the overpass, you can't miss a huge sign on top of the restaurant with its name, an arrow pointing downwards, and the word "here". All these things suggest you're in for the worst sort of tourist trap. You aren.t. When you get there, you have to walk all the way around to the other side to the courtyard entrance, go in, then look behind you for the staircase to the restaurant on the second floor. (The ground floor is a bar.) The waiters speak English. So does the menu, which is on an easel they bring to your table. Most of the dishes are shrimp. I had chicken mole instead. It was good mole: dark and bitter sauce over about half a breast and two halves of a thigh, with rice and beans. They take US cash. I'd like to come back some time. read more
