Wonderful place to eat in downtown Porto. The restaurant has a nice environment to share a meal. We sat on the second floor. Our waiter was good and gave us the time we needed for such a nice meal. We ordered a bottle of wine for our meal and a caprese salad to share. The salad was wonderful with their own olive oil and balsamic to drizzle over the salad. For a main I had the filets of pork over sweet potatoes and creamed spinach. Meat was tender and flavorful. My wife ordered the cheese and onion stuffed ravioli with a wedge of cheese on the side. The staff, the food, the environment, everything was really good! Oddly, there are alot of Italian restaurants in the area and this one must me a very popular one. We were interested in an early appetizer and drink while touring the area and we were luckily able to grab a seat. I could tell the staff was nervously watching our every move as they had guests with reservations soon to come. When it was time for us to leave the place was packed and we were sort of rushed out. This was a very disappointing evening. We made reservations and arrived right at opening time for dinner. The room is beautiful and we were seated at what was probably one of the best seats. It was a nice window seat overlooking the main street and it was set apart from most of the other tables. The service was average. There was no attempt to engage with us and there is no warmth or feeling like we were anything other than a table to be taken care of and turned over. We ordered a bottle of wine. For entrees I had the Iberian pork fillet and my husband had a pasta. My husband's pasta was okay but not great. My Iberian pork fillet had potatoes with it and that was the best part of the dish. The pork fillet was very dry and overcooked. I don't know how you can do this with black pork as it is a wonderful pork that has more marbling than regular pork that makes it juicier. The room is lovely but the server was completely indifferent to us. There was no check on us to see how our meal was. The food was average for my husband's meal and downright terrible for my meal. The prices are high for Portugal. It was not value for the meal and we would not return. There are too many really good restaurants in Porto. read more

Hidden gem in a very relaxed Porto. Happened to see this place pop up in my recommendations for an early dinner in porto after coming back from Spain. The restaurant is decorated like a wine bar and is very homey. You definitely need a reservation if you are not lining up 15 minutes before it opens for dinner, which is at 7pm. I ordered the squid ink pasta and veal tagliatelle. The squid ink pasta was delicious and came with shrimp, clams, and (1) mussel. The veal was delicious but the tagliatelle can use some flavour. What an exceptional restaurant and concept. If you are going here expecting authentic Italian, you are going to be disappointed. This is Portuguese cooking and dishes done with Italian influence. These well balanced and thought out dishes are paired alongside local Portuguese wine... again, you will not find Italian wines on the list. This whole experience was due to a bit of good fortune. There was a last minute cancellation which allowed us to be seated, otherwise we would not have gotten in until 9. Keep that in mind when going, reservations are highly recommended to the point of being essentially required. The staff was absolutely fantastic. Very knowledgeable and attentive. Despite the slightly formal setting, they were quite happy to engage and have conversation when time allowed. The interior is quite modern, but still has plenty of that old world feel with the stone walls and exposed wood beams. The seating was a little tight but it was well laid out and managed exceptionally. Down stairs was a fair bit dimmer than the second story loft. The burrata is sourced from a local dairy and it's the best I have ever tasted. The Olive oil they serve with the meals is beyond excellent. I had the risotto with tiger shrimp. The shrimp was big and meaty and had the taste and texture of lobster. Hubby had the pork tenderloin, cut into quarters and cooked perfectly. It's quaint with only 10 tables on the main level and had an elegant ambiance as if you were eating inside a wine cellar. Run don't walk to La Ricotta! I went with friends to Porto in May and we weren't sure where to go so I turned to Yelp for advice. La Ricotta had good reviews and we figured with all the walking that had ensued, we needed some pasta! This place was exceptional. The staff was delightful, the food was amazing and the entire experience was more than I would have ever expected. We went on Saturday night right before closing and wanted to return Sunday but had to wait till Monday. Yes, you read that right. We went back. Oh,Yes! The food here is excellent. The servers are friendly, competent and helpful. The dining areas while casual are a cut above in the romance and comfort departments. Reservations are highly recommended. Last night we watched a dozen walk-in people being told that there were no tables available for the evening. This is Italian cuisine with a Portuguese twist. In a really good way. Surprisingly for an Italian restaurant there are very few pasta dishes on offer. And this being Oporto, the emphasis on the big plates is meat and fish. The wine list is large enough to please any drinker from rich to poor, from beginner to expert. I had 2 different glasses, one rose' and one red. I just asked my very knowledgeable server which would be the best match with the food. She chose perfectly. For the red she chose a 13 year old 100% Touringa grape that was shockingly good. Price: 7 euros. (In my hometown of Sonoma California this would be a $40 glass of wine). Bambie and me had 4 courses. The burrata (made in house) with many slices of perfect prosciutto, arugula, cherry tomatoes, was fabulous. Accompanied by the 4 euro bread and olive oil basket, this could be a meal for one person. Side note: the olive oil is the best! No acid bite, pure luxurious mouth feel. The seafood risotto was the dreamiest - creamiest in the whole world. The tiger prawn on top was the size of a small lobster and it tasted like one. The filet mignon of pork was also outstanding. Portion size was so big as to be challenging to finish even for me as a confirmed glutton. The panna cotta divine. The perfectly creamy inverted cup form was lightly dressed in a mild lemon glaze. My only criticism with it was the too small size. About 4 spoons and then all gone. I've been in Portugal 10 days so far. Spent a week in Lisbon. This meal was the most satisfying yet not the most expensive. This evening was a 113 euro adventure. Money well spent. read more

I stumbled across this restaurant after arriving at the train station and I am so happy I did. It was early afternoon and I didn't have a reservation but luckily I was able to grab one of the last non-reserved tables and was able to be seated and served. The lunch menu is pre-fixe and includes an appetizer, entree, dessert, bread, and a drink. For my appetizer, I got a vegetable soup and for my entree I got the squid ink pasta. The soup was so-so but the pasta was DELICIOUS and one of the dishes I had in Porto. For dessert, I chose the panna cotta and it was divine. My mouth is watering thinking about it. The best part of all of this is that the price was super cheap! I imagine it can get pricey during dinner when everything is a la carte, so if you really wanna try it then I suggest going during lunch. The restaurant itself is pretty small (or, at least the main floor is) so the servers and bar staff were pretty attentive and always within reach. After a week in Portugal, we needed something other than Portuguese food, and La Ricotta was just the fix. This is a lovely, sophisticated restaurant in a beautiful airy space with friendly, attentive service and a bar worthy of this wine-obsessed city. La Ricotta advertises itself as "Italian-Portuguese fusion," but the preparations are clearly Italy-based, with the addition of Portuguese ingredients. Starters are rich -- I wish there were salad options that contained more greens -- but consistently good. The cheese plate is generous, and the caprese and vegetarian salads could be meals into themselves. All of our entrees were terrific. The pastas were perfectly cooked, and the confit duck (served with risotto) was as good as any version I've had. We were staying at a nice hotel around the corner, and got into town late enough to want to eat nearby. Our desk clerk touted La Ricotta, just around the corner. The restaurant is so unassuming that we nearly passed it right by. We were greeted warmly by the matre' d, manager, sommelier, (owner?) Miguel, with an understated charm all his own. La Ricotta is actually two restaurants in one. Immediately upon entering you come to a bistro type of room that keeps you close to the street, and within sniffing distance of the kitchen. It's active, lively, and still charming. However, we opted for the second floor dining room where we got a more refined, protracted dining experience. By now, if you've read my Yelp submissions, you know I prefer dining to eating. Our host showed us to a quiet table with enough elbow room to enjoy a meal with lots of plates, wine glasses, and a couple of bottles. I was happy because I hate being squeezed into "two-top" tables. La Ricotta also has a bit of a split personality. It features nouveau-traditional Portuguese Cuisine, refined and delicate. Also, they feature fine Italian Cuisine that brought us back a second night. Oh, yeah .... Full disclosure: We enjoyed La Ricotta so much the first night that we ate there again the next night. The service here is modeled on the "team" method. Everyone serving makes themselves available to you, with a smile and only a gentle presence. We had dry white port before dinner, a must. We enjoyed great wine advice and service here. It was our first night in Portugal, so we ordered classic Portuguese dishes. The Roasted Bacalhau was firm and salty, like it should be, but not overly so. Still it is an acquired taste for some. I had the Octopus, which was heavenly. Tender, mouth-melting, sweet. On the second night, my partner had the veal, which were tender cubes, rather than the expected filet of veal. The sauce was delicate and the plate featured fork-tender vegetables as accompaniment. I had the Mixed Seafood over Squid Ink Pasta. Magnificent. The pasta was freshly made, delicate, al dente, and savory with only the gentle flavor of the squid ink. Perfect. You'll like what you see on the menu. Diverse Choices. All I have to say is that we had quite a few items, several courses, over two nights and there wasn't a miss in any of it. In the mood for Italian food, I found this restaurant near my hotel. It's a block away from Majestic Cafe also. The menu was diverse, very affordable prices, waiters were very friendly and professional. The reason I'm taking time to post a review is because after eating at a one-star Michelin restaurant in NYC a week ago, I thought La Ricotta deserves similar recognition. The food was so fresh! The goat cheese ravioli was a big surprise--light, homemade pasta, great sauce and presentation!! The best ravioli I've ever had!! Only negative: without a reservation the hostess was not welcoming, and the upstairs dining room which is very spacious had 2-3 empty tables during the 2 hours I was there. Weirdly enough for a trip to Portugal with amazing food, this Italian meal was my favorite meal. Italian cooked by a Brazilian chef in Portugal!! Who would have thunk it. For appetizer I had the caprese (it came with smoke salmon which my wife ate) and wow, what a treat. Eggplant supple yet not mushy, mozzarella was just the right consistency and the dressing hit the spot, especially with the recommended white wine I had. The main entree for me was the Linguine Nero, White Wine, Clams & Seafood, Peppers and Spices. Pasta home made cooked just right and not overpowering. Seafood seasoned well and cooked to perfection. Simply perfect cook, perfect taste and perfect portion. My wife had the Risotto with Turmeric & Coriander, Tiger Prawn, White Wine & Chilli Pepper. Not only was the African prawn gigantic, but it was cooked to perfection and the risotto, for me at least, was the best I have ever tasted. Just the right amount of seasoning and beautiful velvety consistency and mouthfeel. I was so impressed with the meal that I didn't pay too much attention to the delicious local dessert. The last, and very important item, was the waiter we had. He was amazing. Great personality, very knowledgeable and this young man will go far I assure you.
