The only caution to the park is the steep incline to the Centennial House and Catholic Church. Otherwise, we enjoyed the visit. There are stairs located at either end of the park. Gold Star Memorial Park This scenic park is located right at…read morethe base of Old St. Patrick's Church, overlooking the Corpus Christi Bay. It's a scenic park, with a giant memorial to those lives lost in World War I from Nueces County. Turns out, there were quite a few soldiers who died for the cause of liberty and freedom fighting in the Great War. This memorial on the hillside is a reminder of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. There's a large marble plaque here, and a big sign that lets you know what's going on here. It's a fairly big park for downtown, but a lot of the park is on a heavy slope. The other part is all natural grass, but I'm not sure if it's respectful to go play Frisbee or walk the dog around a war memorial. There are no picnic tables, trash cans, or facilities here. There really aren't any sidewalks to help you navigate the hill, you gotta walk in the street, or walk on a heavy grassy slope. No restrooms. It kinda seems that this was a happening park back in the 20's, but has fallen into disuse in the last century. Parking is a bit on the challenging side, as you either have to park in the church's lot, or walk.

There's plenty of dedicated parking, and the marsh nearby the entrance has some cool stuff on how Rockport is a migratory bird and butterfly refuge, where all sorts of winged creatures come to roost due to the tranquil nature of this seaside town. There's always a variety of lizards and bugs around here too. Be sure to bring some bug spray! The pathway is about ten feet wide, and paved- so it's perfect for walking your dog or riding your bike or even roller skates! The pathway is usually picked up well, so it's beautiful. There were a lot of trees down after Harvey, but the city has been working on picking those up and restoring the trail to its former glory. There's not much at the end of this pathway, so I turn around and head back along the mile to the start. It's a very nice walk, and I recommend checking it out if you have some spare time.

This area is abundant with things to do- check out local art, street performers, stroll around and have beer and pizza, tattoos and bars! This place is a fun place to spend some time while in the downtown area. The Arts District is marked with colorful sidewalks, and sculptures. My favorite part is the decorated electrical boxes- they're done in the Finnish style of Sähkökaappitaide, each box is decorated by a different artist, mostly in a local theme- seaside and nautical themes, along with paintings of local heroes and flowers. So cool! It's a really neat way to get some local flavor onto the streets. Don't go graffiti up a box on your own, they seem to be curated by some civic authority who maintains them. There's some cool murals throughout the area as well. There's plenty of parks in the District- check out La Retama Park that has the First Friday arts walk. It's located in the heart of the Arts District. The Marina Arts District runs from Kinney Street to I-37, and Lower Broadway to the Corpus Christi Marina L and T-Heads.

There is a group of people who walk/jog in the early mornings here. The park opens at 6 AM. The part that is paved near the soccer fields and the playground is well lit. But the part that is closer to the ponds towards the back of the park is not. So if you do decide to walk here in the early morning, for safeties concerns, I always kept to the front half of the park. But the dog park is on a whole other level! Between the small and dog park it has to be a little over an acre. It is extremely well shaded with lots of trees. There are obstacles for your dog to play on. They have a fresh source of water as well as a self filling water station. I absolutely love that they have a pretty significantly long natural trail. My joints don't love pavement but they do love natural trails and oftentimes parks they are overlooked or paved over. This park is a gem for the people of Rockport and those who visit.

I open this review with this observation because the Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge is without a doubt one of Corpus' most popular "birding" destinations. You can almost be assured that if you are visiting this park on a nice day, you will come in contact with both "birders" and "bird watchers" alike. I am not a birder, per se, but I am an overall nature lover, which makes me kind of a bird watcher by definition. In any event, like most normal people, I genuinely appreciate any and all aspects of nature. The park is kind of a not so hidden gem in that it is in an ideal location, but not frequented a lot by locals. It is located off Ennis Joslin just South of TAMUCC (Texas A&M University Corpus Christi) and the innaccessble part (by the public) of the naval base. It is actually smack dab in the middle of all the public university housing, which explains a lot. It is a beautiful wildlife refuge on the bay. The shallow beaches, tall grasses and swampy marshes in this area make for an ideal place for birds to hang out and eat whatever swimming in the shallow waters. It's a good place to hang out and watch the sun set- sometimes there's even dolphins hanging out here! This place isn't really so much for the people of Rockport, as the birds of Rockport.
