Cole Park is an excellent amenity to Corpus living!…read more It is located just South of McGee Beach where Shoreline Blvd turns into Ocean Dr. Most visitors and tourists ignore it because it is not the beach, but once you get familiar with the park, you'll see all it has to offer. And it is quite large and currently under redevelopment with more improvements I remember when lockdowns ended in 2020 and public amenities became accessible again. This was one of the first parks I started to frequent again. I often go downtown for dining and work events, and find myself going for walks here afterwards.

Well, just look at some of the pictures, and you'll get the idea. It is the best and most well kept public nature spot in Corpus Christi, for sure. If you do not know, Oso Bay is where Oso Creek eventually spills out into the bay. It is a really great representation of the ecological beauty and complexity of the area. I can see why so many families and friends frequently come here in groups. In short, it is "Not Your Typical Park". If you are visiting Corpus, for whatever reason, I highly recommend going out of your way to visit this not so hidden treasure!

I'm not sure if the last hurricane dried up these wetlands but things were very dry as of April 2022 and it wasn't much of a wetland at all. They have some really nice park features in the front. Trails are good but are not well marked as indicated by other reviewers but it's not difficult to figure out. There is little shade and the trees seem to really hold in the humidity so bring lots to drink, sunscreen, and maybe frequent in the am or when it's cooled down in the evening. You drive through in one direction with plenty of parking available throughout the park. It's wheelchair accessible and dog friendly, which I really appreciate. There's a boat launch with trailer parking and docks, fishing areas, a pirate ship playground with a splash pad, covered picnic tables, an observation deck, a basketball court, and a large covered pavilion with a kitchen and bathrooms. The city hosts events there, and it's also available for private rentals. I love stopping along the waterfront to watch the dolphins play and ships sail in and out of the port.

I open this review with this observation because the Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge is without a doubt one of Corpus' most popular "birding" destinations. You can almost be assured that if you are visiting this park on a nice day, you will come in contact with both "birders" and "bird watchers" alike. I am not a birder, per se, but I am an overall nature lover, which makes me kind of a bird watcher by definition. In any event, like most normal people, I genuinely appreciate any and all aspects of nature. The park is kind of a not so hidden gem in that it is in an ideal location, but not frequented a lot by locals. It is located off Ennis Joslin just South of TAMUCC (Texas A&M University Corpus Christi) and the innaccessble part (by the public) of the naval base. It is actually smack dab in the middle of all the public university housing, which explains a lot. It is a beautiful wildlife refuge on the bay. There are more than enough trails to keep one moving and entertained with the endless views of beholden beauty that nature bestows upon us.

My family and I shared many great memories at Mustang Island State Park…read more My daughters finally got to share in the experience too back in June 2025. They loved how warm the water was! Camping isn't free to my knowledge, but day use fees are not applied in most stretches of the island. I'll never forget our last summer (June 2025) vacation day when I reminded my girls to try to remain calm and not thrash around if they see a shark. They boogie boarded and swam for a couple of hours. Then about 150 yards away, the fishermen reeled in a couple of juvenile sharks. They took pictures then released them properly back into the ocean. My family acted as though sharks were a new phenomenon. A star knocked off because I was just taken aback by how trashy Texans and tourists have gotten. It didn't seem this bad when I was much younger. I picked up a full trash bag's worth walking up and down our area alone. Let's do better... tell your group to pick up too. Wildlife deserves to search for food and shelter garbage free.

I'm on the hunt for a beach in mainland USA that is in an urban or downtown walkable area, has warm water, has ground level housing, and basically had everything I want right next to the beach. This is a very rare and difficult thing to find. Miami is all sky scrapers. Southern Cali the water is cold. Northern Cali it's even colder. The gulf has great water but it's often rural, swamp, or spring break. Pan handle is beautiful sand but not much city/urban areas by the water. So, enter Corpus Christi. Downtown, on the water, in the gulf. There are much better beaches if you drive out to the island. But if you want to be in the heart of town, McGee beach gives you a worthwhile option. It's a small little beach that isn't great. The beach itself is a bit lame I guess if you're comparing to proper beaches. The great benefit here is its right next to a park, basketball courts, Whataburger and lots of little businesses in walking area. I was there in the winter and it was very quiet. Just a few people walking here and there. It was first Friday so the night time bright crowds of young people and families. Look, the beach is just a tiny little section of sand and water. But given how unique and rare it is to find this combination of factors: beach, decent size town, downtown, marina, park, and food all in one area, I'm gonna give McGee a cool 4 stars. The vibe is very relaxing and would be perfect for a romantic walk at sunset or a morning bike ride.

It was a cute little beach and didn't have many crowds thankfully so can enjoy it in peace. The sand wasn't too bad honestly though there was some trash along the shoreline which is unfortunate. When you do walk into the water there are shells and rocks that maybe hurt to walk in but once you pass that small section, you just feel nice soft sand on your feet. Just wear water shoes if needed. My nephew did find some little hermit crabs but they never bothered us and we're cool to look at. No issues with any animal thankfully. There are different types of birds flying around we saw including seagulls and a blue heron. If you decide to bring food be careful they will definitely try to get some. Overall it was fun experience. Not the best beach out there but still had fun.
