I came to La Moda because of the great reviews online, but I was so disappointed in the work and professionalism of the owner, Michael. I took a bridesmaid gown to be hemmed; it was floor length and I just needed 1-2 inches off. When I came to pick up the gown the staff could not find it in the store. This caused a great deal of anxiety as I was flying to California the following morning for the wedding and did not have time to find another dress. I had to wait for 1.5 hours for Michael to arrive and show his staff where the gown was. I did not try on the dress because it getting late and I needed to pack for my trip they next day. So their huge error was not revealed until I unpacked the dress the morning of the wedding. THEY CUT OFF ONE FOOT OF THE DRESS. I was horrified! The dress was supposed to be floor length and it was now a few inches below my knees. HOW COULD ANYONE MAKE SUCH A HUGE MISTAKE?!?! I had no choice but to wear the dress for the wedding, standing out from all the matching gowns in every picture. I felt like this was such an obvious mistake on the part of the tailor that they would gladly reimburse me. When I showed the dress to the staff they were as horrified as I was that so much of the dress was cut off. However Michael is a stubborn asshole - HE ABSOLUTELY REFUSES TO ADMIT THAT HIS STAFF MADE A MISTAKE. He kept repeating "you were there" for the initial fitting, as if it was my fault. How could I possibly OK someone cutting a foot off my dress?? After arguing for several minutes he offered to repair the dress or make me a new one; what in the world would I do with a bridesmaid dress after the wedding has passed? He also offered to give me store credit - AS IF I WOULD EVER RETURN TO THIS STORE. I felt I was owed a reimbursement for this dress, or at the very least an APOLOGY! I could not believe after all the wonderful reviews on yelp how my dress was completely ruined and how stubbornly unprofessional Micheal was. I urge you not to give this store your business! read more

I wish I could give a higher rating! I just picked up my bridesmaids dress and it fits like a glove! Like Many people I waited until last minute to pick up my dress and when I tired it on it was at least one size to small! I had 9 days before the wedding and it was a Sunday! Luckily I found la moda online and they were open on a Sunday! I was able to pick up my dress the following week. I am so happy with the results, you really cannot tell and work was done. Business owners answer says it all! Why didn't i bring it back? Well you should do your job neatly from the beginning and i would not even have to write a bad review! I wish my review would make some impact how you work but I highly doubt it will be a case. People stay away from them especially if you need work to be done soon and have no time for complains! Michael is a skilled tailor. I've gotten 2 evening gowns altered here and have always been satisfied with the service and the work. They try to be as accommodating as possible and Michael even helped advise me on how to sew a removable sleeve for the dress. With an hour and a half before graduation line up, I ran in with the just-purchased jumpsuit my daughter wanted to wear for the ceremony along with her graduation gown, still folded in the package. I had recently lost some weight and needed a dress re-fitted to my body. I was strapped for time and really, really worried leaving my dress (the only one I have to wear to my wedding reception in Greece) but I was so pleasantly surprised. Got my suit tailored here today, came in the morning unprepared with nothing, got a great recommendation (Century 21) to get an affordable quality suit , by Mike (the owner) drove there got my suit , made it back to kew gardens, walked in got it measured up, was told to come back at closing time. Get a call 1 hour earlier than expected, suit was ready, all the cuts were perfect and it was steamed and pressed. Tried it on and it looked like I just jumped out of a GQ Magazine! The worst experience. I've only visited this shop once but will be sure not to make this mistake again. Aside from not being friendly and being very overpriced-you'll never know when they are open for business. I have been trying to get my clothes for 2 weeks. I've googled their hours but it's clear to me they don't follow what they have posted. After leaving work early, going in late to work and trying even on a Sunday..the shop is always closed. Michael did a great job cleaning and repairing my husband's briefcase. The clasp and hardware were corroded due to some unfortunate moisture getting on it and Michael went and picked out the new hardware, and sent pictures for me to approve before buying them. I live in Manhattan, but I travel to Kew Gardens just for La Moda. I found La Moda when I was desperately searching for a tailor for my wedding dress, which was my mom's wedding dress from 1978. I had gone to a tailor in Manhattan who told me that the wedding dress could not be saved. I wanted a second opinion and I read amazing things about Michael, so I trekked out to Queens. One of the very best tailors I've ever used. Fussy and very exacting about their work. I had an expensive leather jacket that the sleeves needed altering. They did an excellent job. I could not even tell that any adjustment had been done. The owner even suggested that I do some additional adjustment that I had missed, of course he was right and it came out better than the original. The jacket looks like it was made to order. This was my go to tailor when I lived in Queens! I have had 2 suits tailored here and the work was superb. I have had suits taken in, shoulders shortened, and pants hemmed and every time I'm impressed with the attention paid to each and every detail. They are a bit pricey, as most good tailors should be, but the difference it makes is easily seen. For my wedding in June 2017, I took my wedding tuxedo and dress shirt for alterations and their work was mind blowing. It's always better to buy than rent and La Moda really proved that. I got tons of compliments! I have a Boss suit i plan on bringing in for alterations and can't wait to see how well it will look. I strongly reccomend using La Moda for all alterations. Brilliant and skilled! The hood could no longer be attached by snaps to my old but waterproof and warm down coat. It never would have occurred to me to sew the hood onto the coat with a double strong seam. The solution made my trip to a very cold, windy and damp climate enormously successful. I am very disappointed in this establishment and their sneaky credit card tactics. A friend suggested that I come here, since she had some of her clothes altered there. I have zero complaints with the quality of work here, but I am very upset with the way I was treated in relation to their alleged "credit card fees." Importantly, my friend who frequents this place always pays with a card and never gets charged a fee. I am not sure why I was being targeted earlier today. Furthermore, as a matter of business practice, any convenience fee or credit card fee must be disclosed from the outset and posted visibly in the business. I was never told about a credit card fee until after the fact. I do not appreciate these tactics at all. To double check on this and to confirm whether this was accurate, I asked a friend to call the business to see if there is a fee when paying with credit card. When asked this question, the owner stated "No." That begs the question, is this a luring tactic? Do they say this to get you in and then charge that "fee" at the end regardless of the fact? It is absolutely not right to force or deter people from paying the way they want. I wouldn't mind paying a surcharge if I was told from the beginning prior to the alteration, but the way they tried to convince me to pay with cash is what makes me feel cheated. I think this place should emphasize disclosure. As of right now, this is terrible practice and should be scrutinized with the Department of Consumer Affairs. read more

Went to La Moda to have a bridesmaid dress altered. The price of the dress was $99. The cost of the alterations was $173.55, which is insane! The price included taking the bust in 2 inches and removing 3 inches off the bottom because it was too long. The price for the alterations was $168, but I paid with credit and was charged an additional $5.55 credit card fee. Not only did they not disclose the credit card fee, but I have never heard of any business charging to use a credit card if you spend $168. This just shows that they have bad customer service and are money oriented. The work was good, but I will not make the mistake of finding a tailor last minute ever again! read more

I have been to many tailors, however, Lamoda is the ABSOLUTE BEST!..Their workmanship and customer service is incomparable. My family brought three very detailed dresses there to which Lamoda basically remade to perfection. We have also brought many other garments to them that other tailors couldn't or wouldn't touch.
