So refreshing to have quality Mexican and El Salvadorian comfort foods without so many Americanized influences. If you need black olive slices and shredded iceberg lettuce on your tacos, you can go somewhere else for that. This is better! Very delicious food, loved the cheese pupusa and asada taco and salsas. The horchata was fab. And the restaurant interior and kitchen are very clean. The wait is longer than fast food joints. Don't freak out but -- this is NOT fast food. This is restaurant quality, just served in a fast-casual business style. You can tell it's made with better care. Give it a couple extra minutes it's worth it! read more

Great REAL Mexican food. You can always tell a great Mexican restaurant when you are the only one speaking English. I had the Carnitas Tacos and a Mango Jumex (I would normally go strawberry but they were out). Shells were warm and just crispy enough in spots. The Carnitas were well prepared, and I am pretty sure finished to order. The cilantro and onion were very fresh. They brought a Salsa Verde and a Salsa Rojo to the table and both were very delicious. I just moved to the area recently, but I am happy now that I found a place to get a great taco. The atmosphere is what you would expect and they serve beer (mexican varieties and Chelada) no frozen margaritas here, but if you were looking for that you need to go someplace else anyways. This place serves up top notch food every time. I honestly don't think I've ever had an issue with their food. The restaurant is clean and the new renovations look very nice. Delicious authentic Mexican food, but they do put an American spin on some items if you want it. For example they have delicious steak tacos and they make them the authentic way with onions and cilantro...or if you want it Americanized you can get it with cheese, tomatoes, and sour cream. Best Mexican style street tacos I have ever had! I go several times a week. The green home made hot sauce is incredible if you like hot food. It's always clean and they have a drive threw. If you go as much is I do get the punch card. Only drawback the neighborhood is sketchy. read more

I'll be a fan of any place that serves tacos de lengua. Mine were especially tasty, made with lovely little corn tortillas and fresh cilantro. My lunch crew also liked carne asada tacos and a burrito. They've got an English language menu board now, so no surprises. :-D My only complaint might be that the portions were a bit small. We ordered a la carte, and for those who like to stuff themselves with beans and rice, you'll need to order accordingly. On the other hand, it was nice to eat authentic Mexican food without filling myself up to the very brim....perfect for a quick lunch and very convenient to downtown Waterloo. read more

Love at first bite. After moving away from San Jose and the land of magical mission style burritos...I thought I would never find one again. But I have...in Iowa. At La Michoacana. The only thing that could make me even happier would be orange sauce from La Vics (San Jose you know what I mean)...gotta see if they can bring back that habanero salsa. The perfect tortilla, with the perfect ratio of fresh delicious fillings, with some delicious salsas. And some fresh cut avocado slices...muy bueno!!! It's like I've found a long lost friend in the middle of the country. Ignore that one gripe-y reviewer (I'm being "nice") because this burrito could kick the crap out of a Chipotle burrito any day of the week. As I'm traveling for business every week, I'm always in the hunt for good food. This time I chose this place due to the fact that I had not eaten since 5 in the morning. It's a clear definition of a whole in the wall. Yelp has a 4.5 star rating. The steak was overcooked, the Lengua was not prepared correctly. This is a mediocre restaurant at best. I'm rating it purely on food, if I take customer service in consideration it would be a 1 star, but it's a 3 star for food. read more

My two daughters and I were in town for the day and weren't sure where to eat in Waterloo. I yelped local restaurants and this one got great reviews. If you are looking for excellent authentic Mexican food it's here at La Michoacana. It's very casual, inexpensive and delicious! My daughters got cheese quesadillas, rice and beans. I had pulled pork with salsa verde sauce, rice beans, salad and fresh avocado. The service was attentive and helpful. Great place for a fulfilling meal! read more

This was easily the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Service was terrible, food was cold and gross. The atmosphere was terrible, with some of the lights out, huge liquor store fridges in the corner, and it was freezing in the restaurant, I never took off my coat. I typically love Mexican food, but this was inedible. The sauce on my enchiladas was similar to Taco Bell hot sauce packets, and the 'cheese' was similar to that dried Parmesan cheese you buy in a green shaker, not to mention that it was cold. so this place is BEYOND authentic. You basically better know Spanish if you want to order. OK, not that bad, but close! You order from a menu screwed to the wall and hope you did ok if you aren't from south of the border. then you take a bottle of something to drink out of one of the coolers all along the wall and try to find the bottle opener (hint, its bolted to the trash can.) Then you ignore the sleeping old Mexican man at the one table and the busload of guys who just descended on the place. I tried a tongue burrito and chips and guacamole. The guacamole was clearly homemade, and the very best I have ever had in my life. The chips were so-so at best. Although the guac was really that good, they really skimped on the meat in my burrito and just filled it with rice, and there was no sour cream or cheese, so it turned out to be too carb heavy when all said and done. I ended up leaving much of it there, after cleaning the guac bowl with my finger, of course. $14 later I left hungry. So while its truly an authentic Mexican experience, the portions are maybe half of what you would get at Chipotle for twice the price. Next time maybe I'll just stop by and order some of the incredible guac to go and then take it to Texas Roadhouse to eat with a big juicy steak or something. read more

I got two supreme burritos and carne asada fries. He burritos were good and the fries and carne were great. I wish the portions were bigger and that the price for two burritos and fries wasn't 20$. I've been coming to this restaurant for almost a decade and have never been disappointed. It offers very authentic Mexican fare at affordable prices. Their tacos are always full of delicious meats - carne asada, pastor, carnitas, among others - and topped with the traditional cilantro and onions. The tortillas are always soft and fresh. They have a large selection of bottled beverages as well as aguas frescas such as agua de horchata, my favorite. We live out of state but always make a point to eat here when we visit family in Iowa. read more
