It's been awhile since I've updated my review on Amigos... Update from our latest visit tonight as it's been awhile since I've posted and we've been here a number of times. The Panther Burrito has become my go to as it's packed with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, rice, and smothered in cheese. The new Birria items were interesting and the Mrs ordered up The Quesabirra which she said were pretty good but she liked other places versions better. The Margaritas always hit the spot too, we had the lime, a raspberry and our friend had a strawberry version. We were staying nearby and needed dinner on the Sunday night at the end of a holiday weekend. Not much was open nor convenient to this area. We were seated promptly and were served chips and salsa (just ok) but then no one waited on us despite the fact that there were many workers milling around. Actually most of them were transfixed watching the Mexico - USA soccer game on the TVs. Eventually we flagged someone over. I started with a banana daiquiri - not your typical drink at a Mexican joint but it was $3 cheaper than their margaritas... it was quite tasty. I then ordered their two enchiladas combo (one cheese & one ground beef) which was good but nothing special - actually their red sauce was not my favorite. My wife got a platter with an enchilada, a burrito and a tostada - she described it as solid. Prices were typical. I would not rush back. read more

Really wanted to love this place, know the owners care and work hard, and they've been beaten up pretty hard in a local food review group (full disclosure: one that i manage) for things that are old news (no longer relevant). The food was great. Theyve really upped their game on outside decor, portion size, price and taste. So unfortunate then that the service was so poor. This has became our go to Mexican, at work. Doordash screws up 3-4 times we order, but the restaurant always makes it right. Multiple orders- typically 5-6, and everyone is happy. The The queso is truly phenomenal, and I'm not a quest lover. I tend to go with the chicken taco salad which always has an abundance of chicken. One of our new favorite dishes is the seafood enchiladas, surprisingly flavorful. Someone always orders the street tacos and salsa that goes with them should be jarred. Why not 5 stars? I honestly loved the decor and the service was great. They have a nice little patio that was pretty full. The building is a bit hidden behind other businesses but you don't want to miss out. The salsa is VERY runny and was pretty bland; that should have been a warning sign. I tried to make it taste like more than tomato juice by adding hot sauce and salt but had to give up. The menu is large and has plenty of variety. I ordered "The Special" which has one of a bunch of things: tostada, tamale, enchilada, etc. with rice and beans. This is a LOT of food! I just wish it had tasted like something. Sadly, it was all really bland. Yes, the place is clean, friendly, and brightly lit. Yes, the beer is cold and tasty. Yes, the staff is quick and friendly. We were in the area and Mexican sounded great. The brightly colored building certainly drew our attention. The parking lot...well just hope that your vehicle's suspension is good. Those potholes are deep! Greeted rapidly and seated. For a Saturday evening around 5:30 I would have thought there would be a larger crowd. But there was a lot of things going on in the area. The chips and salsa came quickly. Salsa was meh. Asked if we wanted queso and we did. We also ordered margaritas. The queso came and it was so runny it was more like cheese soup. I've only been to one place lately that manages to keep it thick and this wasn't it. The margaritas were terrible. It was like drinking the mix with no discernible tequila. It was so bad that we didn't bother finishing them. The server never asked and since there seemed to be a language disconnect, we decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Food was hit and miss. One kid had the tamale, burrito and enchilada combo. Tamale was great and the other two were average. Husband had the fajitas. But they brought out his skillet first and the rest of us sat for five minutes before our food came and the rest of his. I had the green chili pork and it was ok. It seemed that the pork was cooked separately from the green chilies. The color of the meat and the flavor indicated that the sauce was added after. This is our go to Mexican restaurant but the last two times we have been disappointed. We went on a Saturday before it got busy and service was very slow and they messed up our meals. This last time I got a to-go order and got charged a lot more than what it should have been as I ordered a la carte. I didn't get any chip and salsa either as I was told over the phone I would. My food was good though. I did have to wait about 5 minutes before someone cam over to me. Also something else I noticed was the smell when you walk in the door. A mixture of fried food and cleaner. Went here again to give it one last chance because everyone loves this place that we know. We were the only people in the building at 5:30pm with in 30 mins they had a fairly full building. The margaritas were good but the food wasn't. The Chile Rellenos and they were these shriveled up dry peppers drenched in red sauce. Passing through Waterloo on a Saturday evening and saw the 4-1/2 star rating and decided it would be great - what a disappointment. What service we got was fast but we were given no napkins or tableware - had to ask for them. Waitress barely made eye contact, if at all. The booth seat upholstery was all cut up. The wood table was not clean - had a good size bumped-up area of old food. We ordered one meal to split and it came pretty quickly but on one platter. Requested a 2nd plate from bus boy who quickly brought me a dirty plate. He wasn't so quick in bringing the second plate. My crunchy chalupa wasn't crunchy because it was served on a platter with running sauces. No water refills offered; had to ask and the new plastic glass was chipped on the rim. Dessert of churros was served with a pretty presentation and tasted good, but were served on a platter with a corner chipped off. Food tasted fine but not enough to overcome the other negatives. read more

This restaurant is within walking distance of the hotels nearby. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere was great. The prices are good for what you get. Amigos feels quite authentic and I would recommend anyone who likes Mexican food to go there for dinner. If I ever come back to Waterloo I'm making sure I stop by again. read more

Standard Mexican food. My boyfriend had the mohara frita which he felt wasn't as good as other places he's ordered it from. He said the seasoning wasn't as good and the fish was not as fresh as it could be. I had taquitos con pollo. They were good and I thought their Queso was pretty good. My one detraction is that I enjoy chicken when it is spiced before it goes into the taquitos But this restaurant leaves it plain. read more
