I kept seeing all the hype about La Malcriada's birria, so I finally made the trip back to the old hood. The Yelp photos of the 15-pack birria tacos got me, and I threw in the birria pizza because why not?!?! The tacos had great flavor, but they came without consomé... like serving chips without salsa. I would've gladly paid extra if I'd known! The pizza was good too but could've used more cheese, more meat, and a side of consomé. Salsa negra and black chili oil were very tasty and spicy!! The restaurant was spotless (almost too spotless it smelled like ammonia and flowers), and the staff was nice enough, though not overly friendly. Overall, MAYBE I'd come back, but please let customers know the consomé is NOT included, because every birria taco deserves a swimming pool!! read more

The quesabirria is spectacular. I had both with a corn tortilla and a flour tortilla. The guisado is spot-on; the meat melted in your mouth. I'm not one to put salsa on my birria but their dark salsa was absolutely the perfect match. The fish taco was great too! read more

This family owned Mexicaneatery makes some very good food. I had the beef birria fluatas or crispy corn rolled tacos and a malcriada house taco, which came with beef birria and pork Belly on a corn tortilla. The beef birria fluatas were good, but they were a little over fried, as a result, dried the juicy beef birria inside the fluatas. Nevertheless, the they were tasty and very dipped in the birria consommé. The consommé was delicious. The malcriada taco was absolutely delicious. The combination of the savory pork belly and juicy and tender beef birria were outstanding. The tacos came with a touch of chopped onions ans cilantro. Due try the salsa macha in the bottle that is offered on the tables. It's terrific and went well with both items I order. The service is super friendly and welcoming. It's fast and casual, and they offer inside and outside seating. Menudo is also available on the menu. read more

Really good birria. I had a huge bowl for $15 birria was flavorful and moist. Place was clean and modern. Fun decorations. A cool instagram picture spot. My husband had the carne asada taco and he said it was good but he wished they had a red traditional taco salsa. Ice cold beers We had bottled sodas. Enjoyed the music Really clean inside. We finally got to go and try the burria at this place. I got there after 9am, the place empty, nice and clean, cozy enviroment. Big menu, decent prices. I went there specially to try the Birria. Ordered half order and some tacos. All beef, not greasy. But the disappointment was that it tasted like everything but birria. If you're looking for the traditional birria flavor, this isn't the place. read more

At first I was disappointed because the usual spot I eat birria at was closed due to the holidays but eventually I found this AMAZING spot. Lots of flies everywhere! We asked for ketchup and we got a bottle sticky with ketchup all over it. It took forever for them to serve us. We ordered an American breakfast with burned toast, the sausage was not fully cooked and the egged were flavorless. The chilaquiles verdes were ok. read more

The food is excellent, fresh, hot and to the point. I have gone there several times, and there is consistency in the birria and other dishes. The service is excellent as well. Marlene is cordial, respectful and funny. The ambiance is minimal, as the place is small. The place is very clean. The only problem is the music, which is distracting and somewhat loud. The umpa, umpa of the Mexican bands is distracting, however. This is minimal when you have good food and great service. read more

We ordered the Birria chilaquiles in the afternoon (doesn't come with the same sides as the breakfast order), Birria torta, a Birria taco and a carne asada taco. Their Birria is delicious and very flavorful! It does not disappoint. Carne asada taco: I did not care for the carne asada meat, it didn't taste quite like carne asada - I was expecting a smoky flavor, it was just off for me, but the guacamole it comes with is good. The Birria torta is great! It has like a crispy layer of cheese. Just be careful, the torta bread gets very soggy if you don't eat it right away. The chilaquiles don't come with a salsa - it is an order of chips with Birria on top, and cilantro and onions, etc. but again, since we ordered them in the afternoon, I think they make the plate different from the breakfast version. Still pretty good. Also, the service was excellent- very fast! Would definitely come here again! read more

So when we woke up and getting ready to find breakfast before our drive home, we certainly noticed the long row of people waiting to be seated. So I put in my name for 6 and waited 35 minutes; and it was worth it. I shared a large menudo with my wife but I knew my son was not going to finish his birria de chivo [goat]. I also tasted my daughters birria de res [beef]. Everything was so good BUT nothing was as good as the Cafe de Ola. OMG. My wife didn't order one but tasted mine and we couldn't let Jorge, our waiter, leave without bringing her one too. Jorge was super friendly and did a great job for us. Oh, did I mention the home made tortillas? Place was comfortable but a little warm. But it was better than sitting in their outside seating area. Didn't really like the fact that they added the 18% surcharge [tip] and then brought us the bill with an 18%, 20% & 25% suggested tip on that bill.

They play Mexican and Spanish music while serving up authentic tasting Mexican dishes. The food hit the spot and I got to practice my 80% delight. Other notables are they didn't skimp on the jalapeños, limes, and other side items. I probably could have filled up on these alone. (: There's places that claim all the good stuff of Mexican foods then proceed to cook in crappy oils. Yuck! Skip those and come here instead.

And had to wait about 10 minutes for them to get more out, twice! So we were unable to eat a complete meal without having to wait for them to refill the food trays. Which was about 5-6 minutes on some and about 10 minutes on other. For the price, not worth it. Plus drink is not included on the price buffet. The girl who over charged me didn't even acknowledge to apologize and when refunded the difference, she sent it with another girl and gave it to the wrong person.

We're from out of town and staying in San Diego because our son had a soccer game in Chula Vista…read more My husband was craving a Mexican breakfast, so we searched for something close to the soccer field and found El Patio. We're so glad we did! The food was delicious, and the restaurant itself is such a cute spot. The decor and atmosphere are really charming and welcoming. They were pretty busy when we were there, but you would never know it based on the service we received. Our server, Gerardo, was amazing! He was so friendly, attentive, and genuinely nice. He kept us updated on our food, stayed on top of our refills, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Just a really cool guy who made us feel taken care of even with how busy the restaurant was. Between the great food, adorable atmosphere, and impeccable service, we were really happy to stumble across this little gem. If we're ever back in Chula Vista, we would absolutely come back. Definitely a great breakfast spot and an easy five stars from us! From your friendly, Chiefs fans :)
