One of my friends asked for a cappuccino (yes, we know it's not traditional after noon, but still) and got a hard time from the server about it and brought it out at the very end. The complimentary finger foods were a nice touch, but felt a little forced--like they were trying hard to be ultra-fancy rather than just letting the food speak for itself. For mains, I had the carbonara, which unfortunately was the weakest pasta dishes I had in Italy, honestly I've had better back home. My friend ordered the pizza, which cost €25 and ended up being more like a tiny pizza bagel than a proper pie. It was so small he finished it in two bites, which turned into a bit of a joke at the table but also felt disappointing for the price. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but between the strange service, the underwhelming food, and the really high prices, this was easily our least favorite meal in Caserta. We had some of the best food of our lives elsewhere in the city, so I'd recommend waiting it out and getting into the pizzeria next door instead.

Spaghetti was buttery and just the right amount of flavor. Also had the cacio e pepe with mussels. Again, so fresh, so clean. Mussels were *just* cooked so they were super tender. Portions were kind of small, but I thought that was a fair exchange for the quality. We also ordered the seafood risotto from the counter, which was a bigger portion, though not so much seafood, but that was only 5€. Three primis plus large water totaled to only €26. And to think just earlier a nearby restaurant handed me a flier where lunch sets started at €25 per person!

People come in with lofty expectations of being blown away by the pizza, and while most if the pizza we tried was well above average, nerveless a gap existed to my expectations. The staff were great given the massive number of people that make pilgrimage to this place and the months in advance needed to get a booking during prime season. The Capriccisita pizza as described in my attached photo was mind blowing which overpowered the other pizzas we ordered. Friendly efficient staff. Figuring out the registration of your reservation prior to entry was a little tricky and chaotic but it eventually worked out fine. Tonight though, in my opinion the crust was not best in class. I found it to be excessively doughy around the edges and soggy in the bottom. Without a great crust as a base any great pizza is doomed to underperform. I will try the world nbr 2 ranked pizza place in the world, Una Pizza Neopolitana,, also owned by the same group, when I'm back in New York to see how their crust performs. Regardless, it was a worthwhile visit.
