Club sandwich kinds of diners in Montreal - 1 of 2…read more I found Restaurant Lafayette as a side effect of going to look for Troisieme Tasse coffeehouse about a block away from Metro Papineau. Troisieme Tasse's locale appeared to be empty and had leasing signs on its vitrines. As I walked back to the Metro realizing I needed to get coffee elsewhere, I saw Lafayette unobtrusively occupying a corner and almost directly across from the Metro station. I filed it away in my head to look it up and see what they had to offer. Lafayette checked out just fine on review sites, so I went in to eat lunch another day. As you walk in, it's a little long in the tooth, but that adds some character to Lafayette. It has the big booths and, as a bonus, its sitting on a corner allows it to have many booths next to windows. It looked like there was quite a bit to choose from, so it could have been that I was overwhelmed. That said, I settled on a club sandwich and a soft drink. I sure have eaten a lot of club sandwiches in the province of Quebec, with all of them being plentiful and satisfying. I've eaten them in Montreal, in Quebec City, and even smack in between the two in Trois-Rivieres. In fact, there used to be a place called Le Club Sandwich about a block or so west of Papineau for which the site, complete with the tacky building occupying it, has given way to gentrification. Lafayette has a good feel ... sort of like a worn and comfortable shoe. The service was also "comfortable," for lack of a better word, but not at all worn, or world weary. By this I mean that it was informal and good-natured, almost as if in a small town. The prices were in the ballpark for this genre and for having an in-town Montreal location close to the city center. The club sandwich was very good. I was very happy with that choice - almost always safe and almost always tasty and filling. Restaurant Lafayette has been around a long time and local folks as regulars is a good sign. I would eat here again and, with a location between Centre-Ville and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and being so close to a Metro station, it would make it even more likely.

And even if my go to, is the original one from 1929 at Ville Émart, I've decided to give a shot at their location on Jean Talon. At what I call "The Burger Triangle", where my three of my favourite burgers are around Metro Fabre, Mange dans mon Hood, L'Hamburger and of course Dilallo. Compared to Ville Émart, That location is smaller and looks like more a bistro than a diner. The vibe is chill, 5,6 70s dude where talking to each others, all seated at a different table, a bit loud, but the conversation were funny to listen. It supposed to have capicole which is delicious as well, but I got food restrictions, can't eat it this time. I've ordered with the bread wet, but the very young cook was more focused on his cell than his orders. He forgot to wet it, no big deal tho. And once again, the burger delivered, still frickin' delicious! And the fries, my boy! I forgot how they were so good. I never tried their poutine yet, but with fries like that it should be pretty good.

It used to be the standard fast food fare you'd typically find at any food court but this resto pulled out all the stops to change what they are all about. First of all this place is gorgeous! The quality of the decor and the look of the establishment was a really nice surprise. Furthermore it's no longer a counter you order from and wait for the food to be prepared. Now they give you a number which you place on your table and the staff bring your food to you when it is ready. This was honestly great as I'd much prefer not have to stand up and wait when there's a rush of patrons waiting on their food. I can go sit down and keep myself busy. They even have nice TVs and this awesome pop machine with at least 20+ soda options and among them the elusive vanilla coke that makes me so happy to occasionally enjoy. This was totally awesome!!! I ordered the old fashioned gyro with their house fries with a side sweet sauce... the food was so good!! Some people may think poorly of fast food Greek food but I don't care.... this food is awesome and the value given for about $10 I paid is very high. All in all this place deserves 5 stars but alas I'll only give them 3. When I visited this place for the first time with 2 of my coworkers, the ordering process was a bit difficult. It was pretty clear the cashier was new to the job and having a hard time handling the orders. Kindly note this place opened a few mere days earlier so we were more than understanding of the situation. But that's not why I dropped 2 stars. The reason why I'm notching 2 stars down is how poorly the manager treated her while in front of clients (specifically us). I fully acknowledge some people simply don't work out at a job but it's quite unacceptable to tell them "if you cannot work better you can go home right now" with a nasty tone right in smack of a client paying for an order. The look on the teenage girls face was a mix of shock, anger and fear that made her look like she was about to break down in tears until I left. My coworker confronted to manager on a 1 on 1 after we ate and the manager seemed shock that we weren't happy about how he treated her for us and ultimately and savagely responded it won't be a problem in the future since "she's being let go". Firstly that was not our intention to see someone fired and secondly not what we needed to know. Are you that awful? So in conclusion one of my coworker stated she refuses to come back to this place ever again, another will come back maybe in time (apprehensively) and I find myself conflicted between being a regular patron or following their stand against this place. Either way I decide it doesn't matter....it won't change the very poor staff management. I understand it's new and you want everything to be perfect for your Greek slice of paradise but you left a long loooong impression on us which in turn provided you with your first business review with your shortcomings being the major subject. Opa. Since this review was put up i have come back a few times and received feedback from kojax corporate which is appreciated. This being said, I haven't seen the employee since. Food is good and affordable so I'll occasionally be back.

The poutines here are actually really good if you ask for the fries crispy. They don't drown it in gravy, which I appreciate. Ordering in person is usually better, but even on Uber Eats I've noticed it's not the driver's fault when things are off -- it's the way the store preps it. Their house salad is solid, love the super thin onions. For the pita, I always ask for a little salt and pepper on the tomatoes since they're otherwise bland. And the Kojak sauce? Definitely go for a mix of both if you can -- it makes the pita way better.

I haven't seen that at a fast service restaurant in years. The line is like other similar restaurants. You order the base of your food (bowl or poutine) and flavor of grilled chicken when you pay, then you pick out your sauces and toppings later on in the line. Then the grill guy adds your chicken last. Lots of gluten-free options. The food was very tasty. The toppings guy suggested the tzatziki and I'm so glad he did. It was really good. We went around noon on a Saturday, luckily were able to find a spot to sit. This restaurant is very small and narrow, there are about 20 seated places, most of them at the bar. Better to grab and go as the atmosphere is noisy and cramped. We tried the "tit double" double cheeseburger, the chili burger, patty melt and sides of chili fries and "cantine" fries which had queso and big mac style sauce. Food is delicious, greasy, salty, well seasoned and fresh, fast to order and receive. The "tit" short for "petit" (small) double cheeseburger was definitely on the smaller side, for around $8.75 a decent price, but I was expecting something kind of monstrous and decadent by the photos. The burger is smaller than it looks compared to similar places. The fries are perfect for sharing. I noticed in Google reviews some people mentioned the fries were overdone, kind of burnt or crispy. I did notice this as well, however perhaps this is done for a reason. As most of their french fry dishes are covered in sauces, like poutine, chili, or queso, a slighter firmer crisper fry will hold its shape better and won't result in a soggy mess. Ideal for take out as you can still enjoy the texture of the potato minutes later. I would come back to try some of their other smash burgers but taking a star away for the location and comfort factor. There is only street parking, and such limited seating that you can't come in large groups or truly enjoy a sit down experience.

More Montreal (1 of 2)…read more I told a good friend of mine they needed to visit Montreal. They did and are still thanking me. This person hails from the United States, but has lived in different countries. In turn, I was told to go eat at Maison Grecque. On a humid summer day, I did just that. Maison Grecque sits on Avenue Duluth, where it feels like a blend zone between Centre-Ville and where the Plateau feels too earthy crunchy. Avenue Duluth has been known to house various Greek options and this is certainly one of the better ones. They run a table d'hote with lunch pricing all the way until 4 p.m. I barely I made it in there and the server told me that he had to place the order very quickly so their computer would hold the price. I ordered a combination platter with two skewers of chicken souvlaki, potatoes, salad, and rice. It was preceded by a bowl of avgolemono soup. It was a generously sized platter and more Greek restaurants should imitate its proportions. With it came a dessert and, while I don't remember if I had a choice, it was a small piece of baklava. I had a cup of drip house coffee with which to wash it all down. It was a very good meal; that is, if you like casual and robust Greek cuisine. Of the many area restaurants which end with the word "Grecque," this is the most worthy of that label. If I was in the mood for Greek food, I would definitely go back. Most of the time I am. A few rare times I'm not. There was a weird mix up with the order being so close to the end of the table d'hote period. The server caught it and did a quick slight of hand to fix it. The guy sitting across the arched low wall from me noticed it and laughed. Without going into much detail, it wasn't something you see every day. The server was humorous. Unlike other places in the world I visit, I really appreciate being perceived as a local here ... at least initially. I was happy with the table d'hote's pricing. The restaurant has a cozy interior that is sort of rustic. Take note that, for when the weather is cooperating, they also have a large exterior garden seating area. Since I was told to eat here, and it turned out to be a positive experience, I thought I would pass this on to readers of reviews. Maison Grecque on Avenue Duluth is one of the better casual Greek restaurants at which I've eaten in the Montreal area.
