La Gare Bistro is a new restaurant for Gex. It is located in an old train station not too far from the center of town. The exterior is plain and simple with an ample parking lot for the limited seating service inside. The inside has been given a fresh coat of paint and is decorated in a style and colour palette that just screams "manly minimalism".
If you are adept in restaurant eating in France, then the first thing you are likely to notice is that it is very spacious inside. This is quite unlike most French restaurants who cram as many tables into the smallest amount of space possible.
La Gare is open for lunch and dinner service. I *HIGHLY* recommend that you make a reservation in advance, either as early in the day as possible, if not the day before. This is not a walk-in friendly restaurant. There is limited seating inside and they do only one service at each meal.
The chef is a young man and he has created a smart menu. Not too many options, nor too few, and the carte seems to change every few months. Given the changes this seems like a combination of seasonal menu changes with a few extras thrown in to keep it fresh and interesting.
The price is spot on for their bistro fair menu, which means for the region it is quite competitive! My husband and I paid 88€ for 2 entrees, 2 plats, wine (a super yummy Bordeaux), and 2 desserts!
Expect your meal to be much better than the average French bistro experience. Remember the chef is young and finding his way, so expect a few small errors here and there, but in general a consistently yummy meal at a great price! (Example, risotto slightly undercooked, 2nd cup of pepper sauce for my husbands steak was clearly rushed and was unfortunately too salty). read more
