We drove from Tacoma to Spokane and willingly added about 75 miles to the trip just to stop in…read moreUnion Gap for Los Hernandez. That should tell you something right there. This isn't some trendy stop or overhyped roadside thing. It's just really, really good food made by people who clearly care about what they're doing. We ordered the lunch plates and ended up sitting next to Mr. Hernandez himself. We got to hear about how he started the place because he genuinely loved working with masa, and how that slowly turned into winning a James Beard America's Classics award. Nothing flashy about it -- just years of doing it right. Knowing that story while eating the food made it feel even more special. The rice was fluffy and deeply seasoned -- not an afterthought. The homemade pinto beans were tender but still held their shape, topped with pico that added exactly the right acidity and freshness to balance the plate. Then the tamales -- jalapeño & cheese and pork. He spoke highly of the masa, and you could immediately tell why. The texture was spot on: moist but structured, never dense. The filling-to-masa ratio was right where it should be. Every bite felt balanced. The salsas were bright and flavorful, but they enhanced rather than covered anything up. You didn't need to smother the tamales -- they stood on their own. The place itself is humble and unpretentious. Floral tablecloths, paper plates, simple seating. Exactly how it should be. You're there for the food and the people behind it. They sell fresh and frozen tamales at a few other locations too, which is honestly dangerous information to have. Absolutely worth the detour. Five stars without hesitation.

I show up get my food, my fault for not checking prior to leaving but there was 2 slightly larger parties and 3 2-4 top tables. Looked like 1 server but then another girl came out so not 100% sure but being in the service and food industry i do understand mistakes happen. I live about 15 minutes away, so once i got home i try my quesdilla which im white yes but this is thr most unauthentic birria ive ever tasted. Absolutely no flavor what so ever and immediately make me feel sick especially when i noticed their being cilantro and onions in my food. When i called she said they are just beyond busy yet didnt offer anything else. I said id like atleast something to be done about it, she offers that i bring it back for them to take off or remake it. I said it honestly doesnt take good and its out of my way considering i just got home. And i said to atleast please take my tip off. Once i thought about it more i honestly just wanted it refunded since im not able to eat it and wouldnt want too. I try to call back to ask for atleast a refund on the quesdilla since the rice and beans were bad besides it being so small for $20. They blocked my number. Therefore i will be disputing the charges. Ive worked being an only server on a holiday, at restaurants & casinos. I would again not say it was anything that couldn't be handled if you are trained properly. Even if a customer has any complaints, if it was to go and beyond our fixing at that point since we didnt check it for what it was supposed to be we would give you a comp. So honestly would recommend anywhere else!

This place is nice and clean with plenty of space. The food was good with the plate presentation being very organized and colorful and not to mention good seasoning. The adobada being one of my early favorites as well as the flautas de pollo. The Sopes were nice and hot really good to enjoy with the side of rice. As with new businesses, not a lot of traffic through the lunch hour so it was a delight to get all the attention for service . It does have a bar so it soon might be a favorite for people to enjoy night drinks here once in a while. I definitely recommend it!

The food is beyond outstanding. I would love to eat here every single night of the week ha ha ha! They were so kind to put on the different games on tv that we requested in the bar area. Lilly is one of the best bartenders I've ever met... And she gave me some tips about how to order my margarita back home. Maya is an excellent waitress and gave us absolutely outstanding customer service. She managed our group which wasn't simple... She made recommendations and serve the food so timely. I'd like to give a shout out to the chefs in the back because they make absolutely outrageously fantastic Mexican food. I can tell these people have been doing this for a while and I'm wondering which mamas recipe am I eating! If you want great Mexican food... This is your place. I also love the patio on the river and I think whoever is doing the flowers out back has a tender touch and an eye for Beauty. They really make a difference. One of my favorite parts of my evening as I met this beautiful soul Milagros and her sweet counterpart! Milagros is a precious soul who makes the tortillas... These tortillas are so perfectly shaped and perfectly made. I wish I had this kind of talent. She was so quiet... but devoted to her craft! I can see that she put LOVE into making these tortillas! I loved the girl that was working with her too. They showed me how they use this machine to roll out these handmade tortillas. They are so beyond delicious. I wanna come back again tonight. Thank you to the staff and the owners of this incredible restaurant... You are sprinkling love into the entire experience at this restaurant. We will come back again.
