This review is long overdue for our visit back in November of 2024. I was looking up Nduja recipe…read moreand reminded myself this was the place that initiated my love for Nduja sauce. American/Aussie owned bakery brunch spot by the river, such a cute little eatery. We loved our visit and though it's definitely more of a touristy spot, as most customers spoke English, the food was delicious to forgo the tourist trappy vibes. We shared a plate and added some items as we didn't want to get too stuffed on our first day of Florence. We had the Nduja Eggs plate with bacon and avocado added. Nduja is a spicy Calabrian pepper spreadable pork sauce, and oh boy was it so flavorful. If I remembered correctly, Melaleuca spread this sauce on top of a fried bread and eggs. I don't see it on the menu at the moment and it's probably a rotatable dish... but it definitely kicked started my hunt for the sauce. Since this is a spreadable pork, it's not something I could bring back to the US but I was able to find it online back home. The service was amazing and the beverages were delicious. Like many Italian places, the dining room is small and bathroom is a single small room that might require a small wait if they're busy. Didn't get to try their baked goods this last time, but definitely on our list to go back for more when we're back to Florence for a visit.

I had calamari and fried fish with fries. It fine enough. It neither dish had any flavor. I utilized a lot of salt, pepper, and lemon. Then it was edible. My sons had for starter's: the anchovies, tuna slices, and tuna tartar. I tasted the anchovies and surprisingly they were amazing. They put all the flavor and seasoning in the anchovies and tuna fish slices. The tuna fish had flavor but it still had that fish tuna taste. It was seasoned well though. I didn't try the tuna tartar but my son said it was good. It was over a bed of chopped up cantaloupe. The tartar was marinated and very flavorful. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't really memorable for me. I wouldn't be interested in going back. The staff was attentive and joyful. They played songs from the Mama Mia soundtrack and customers and staff members sang along. I may have picked the wrong thing but my family enjoyed what they had.

This place was inviting as it was lit and the pastries and desserts were so inviting. We didn't have a cannoli yet and their cannoli was just calling our name from the glass window. Caffe Neri is a small narrow shop with various goods from sandwiches to pastries to desserts and also coffee. We opted for the cannoli and a specialty cake that they are known for. Both were not too expensive and was just okay. Oddly enough, I've had better cannoli in Philadelphia. The sponge cake was just a sponge cake. It's a quaint little shop, good to try a few things, but nothing exceptional in my eyes.

They have a wide assortment of gluten free goodies -- from cookies to pies to savory bread-based delights. It's all priced quite fairly, too. I came in around 6pm on a Friday, and the kind woman behind the counter advised me to come back in the morning because they had more things in the mornings. I was sincerely baffled and said-- wait, more?! To me, they had a ton of great options even at 6pm! Apparently the cases are packed full in the mornings and if you want your best pick of the lot, go then. But if you're like me and not able to do that for whatever reason, you'll still find plenty! I can't have gluten or dairy. Sometimes it's hard to find dairy free goodies in a gluten free bakery. Not so with Starbene! They had cookies, pies and tarts as well as some bread-based savory items -- all clearly marked as without dairy. Grazie, Starbene!! Made my whole night! I ended up getting some cookies (3 for 1€) -- they were almost like thumbprints, with blackberry jam filling and with chocolate hazelnut filling. So. Good. I also got an apricot jam tart (~3€, I think). It was also delicious! The apricot jam was just the right amount of sweet and the crust was perfectly flakey. Plus, there was a heart shape on top which was just the sweetest little detail. I also got a focaccina, which was kind of like a bread roll pizza without cheese or sauce. It was super good! I took it up to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoyed it with a view of the city. Perfection! My next visit to Florence, Starbene's will be a must do. No question about it. Gluten free friends, get yourselves over there and enjoy!
