Despite being warned by several people about the manager's (a man with long hair tied back) poor attitude, I never experienced it myself until today--and it was enough to ensure I never return or recommend it again. ​I ordered a simple Ham, Cheese, and Tomato toastie that arrived heavily coated in unlisted oregano (see photo). Because this isn't an ingredient I can handle and it was not listed on the menu, I asked for a replacement. The waitress was professional and immediately offered to remake it, but the manager--who was opening boxes and didn't even bother to stand up or look at the toastie I was trying to show him--intervened and flatly refused. ​He claimed the sandwiches are "pre-made," which is a blatant contradiction of the menu's promise that customers can "combine ingredients as you wish." Either the menu is misleading or he was simply being dishonest to avoid fixing a mistake. ​I usually do takeaway, but last Saturday I had breakfast here and noticed his poor attitude toward the staff. The food was late and cold, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt, thinking it was just a stressful morning. After today, I can confirm this is just how he treats everyone--staff and customers alike. ​To be clear, I would never normally bother to lodge a formal claim over a "silly" ingredient. However, his insulting attitude and total lack of basic customer service have made this a matter of principle. By refusing a remedy for a product that didn't match the description, he has failed to meet Australian Consumer Law guarantees. I am now lodging a formal complaint with NSW Fair Trading to ensure this conduct is addressed.

Full of scrummy Italian treats, there's sweet, savoury and all the things that make your mouth water. The deli section features shelves and fridges stacked with all the usual deli fare: meats, cheeses, dips, olives, breads, pastas and sauces... there's also all the good sweet stuff and a host of Italian memorabillia and gifts for sale. I recommend grabbing a table in the cafe and settling in for a while under the Italian posters. The coffee is Italian: rich and strong, and the food... is delicious! Try the toasted ciabatta with ricotta and roasted tomatoes or the meatballs, actually try anything on the menu, it's all pretty amazing. If you are looking for a great Italian treat, this is the spot for you.

However, what you should keep in mind is that this place is tiny, and does not take reservations on Fridays or Saturdays, so you take pot luck on seating and volume. So, for instance, I probably couldn't take my parents here, but if I could convince my partner to spend his next Christmas bonus (oh yeah, this place ain't cheap) roughly 10 months in advance, well I would go back tomorrow. One of these is Formaggi Occello, a store selling a huge range of cheeses from Italy, France, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Holland, Spain, America and around Australia. The store is super cute and has a homely rustic feel to it. A long deli counter stocking their meat and cheeses, and the other side of the store showcasing their packaged pastas, oils and other goods. If you check out their website, you can see all the things you can purchase such as wine, meats, cheeses, snacks, nuts crackers, condiments, grazing boxes and more. They even do wedding cheese cakes and hampers. I happened to be in the area when the store was holding a free cheese tasting and I had the opportunity to sample some of their cheeses. This was great as it introduced me to some new flavours, and I bought some of these to take home, in addition to some bresola which I made into the tastiest sandwich. I look forward to returning and sampling and purchasing some other flavours. I also found the staff to be super helpful in recommending the best meats to pair with the cheese I selected. I mean seriously... it's pretty much at that level of awesomeness. They have cheese from all over the place. Have a browse through and get some cheese to take home. They also carry Tapatio and a few other brands of hot sauce. They didn't have Cholula, which was a bummer because it's a favourite of mine, but overall nice selection. I love the risotto and ravioli. And you will be back for more, if you are feeling carb concsious try the minestrone soup, it is the only served with a small role and it has very little pasta in it. I love the way the flavours of the risotto jump around your mouth and then you can even choose to have more chilli flakes, pepper and salt sprinkled on the top of dish along with parmesan. Their selection of olives also look fresh and more varied than your normal deli, Im looking forward at trying their anchovy filled olives on my next visit.

A Hidden gem in the depths of Martin place in the CBD of Sydney is the GPO cheese room. Enter via…read morethe old post office building, head down the stairs and you will find your cheese wonderland. Once inside the cheese room, to the left is a cheese counter and the rest of the room is filled with bottles of wine. This could be considered heaven for some and probably is. There is a nicely set dining room to the right, where you can enjoy your selections in sophisticated comfort. The staff are very attentive, filling your water glass and providing great service. The GPO cheese room has a large selection of wine from many regions around the world, much like their cheese offerings. We browsed the menu trying to decide what to order, a difficult task considering everything they have to offer. Do we pick a couple of different types of cheese, burgers, antipasto, a cheese and wine flight or a main? Nope, we spot that they have fondue on the menu, something you do not come across too often in Sydney. This is something that appeals to my Swiss roots. We select a nice glass of pinot and sip away, in anticipation for the brie coulommiers and truffle fondue to arrive. The fondue hits the table, the flame is lit and the cheese melts, turning into a bowl of liquid goodness. The fondue set was very impressive, consisting of a large platter containing a selection of cured meat, potatoes, bread, crackers, pickled figs and grilled garlic prawns. The fondue forks were kept busy as we were selecting items to pass through that decadent mix of cheese and truffle, transforming each item into a mass flavour infusion. At $56 between two, it is great value. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the GPO cheese room, set up in the historic post office building at the bottom of Martin Place. With a great selection of cheese and wine at a good price, this place is now on our radar and one we recomnend you add to your list.

Umberto Somma started making cheese around 1959 and established a business in 1962 when his neighbours and friends wanted to buy the cheese. Today the factory is run by his two sos and produces about 20 different styles: burrata, boconcini, ricotta, cacciota and fior di latte to name a few. The cheeses produced by Paesanella are all soft cheeses and have a shelf life of less than a week but they are the best cheeses of their kind that you will find in Sydney. They also sell a range of hard cheeses from other manufacturers. You can buy straight from the factory or from their shop which is located at 88 Ramsay St Haberfield.
