On March 12, 1928 just about midnight, tragedy struck as the St. Francis dam burst. Nearly thirteen…read morebillion gallons of water exploded from its captivity and rushed towards the ocean some 50 miles away. It washed away absolutely everything in its path, including a newly built hydroelectric powerstaion, forests, several small villages lots of animals and people. Several thousand ton boulders of concrete and rebar were found miles down the path of destruction. A bit over four hundred souls were lost in the tidal wave that obliterated its way out to Ventura's coastline into the ocean. Dubbed the 'worst engineering disaster ever' by a bunch of websites; I was told about this horrific event by my super cool boss. He said that the ruins of the event were still there and you could even visit them! After some research, I set out early one Saturday morning to find this place. I followed the instructions I had found, and after passing the rebuilt in 1929 still currently functioning, hydroelectric powerstation, I found the 'parking lot' to the dam site. The parking lot is merely a blocked off area of the road about 145 degrees off to the right of the direction of San Francisquito Canyon Road I was currently driving on. There's no signs nor warnings nor museum or any kind. Just this lil 'k-turn' the directions mentioned. I parked the car and hopped the road block and started walking down the road. It's a pretty easy walk. It's a road. Well, it was a road. The road leads into an overgrown foresty area for a lil bit. The road then continues on for a bit. On your left over there is where the Dam used to be. Shortly afterwards you round a bend to see a big field. Off to your right over there is San Francisquito Canyon Road. Traffic rushes past, probably not even aware of the horrific disaster that occurred right freekin here some ninety years ago. I wandered around and ended up in the great big field. I wondered if I was here. Is this where it happened? Not being sure, I walked a bit further down. I then looked down at the rock I was standing on. Wait. This wasn't a rock, this was concrete. There was even a rusty pipe sticking out of it. I'm standing on a chunk of Saint Francis Dam. It took a moment to sink in. Woah. This is where it happened. I looked around to wonder what the rushing wall of titanic boulders and water would look like. I'd imagine that's probably a very scary sight, and more than likely the last thing you'll ever see. It was neat to be able to stand where history was. Wonder what they heard and saw. Wonder what their last moments were like. Regardless, it's super cool. I touched history. You can too. There's a lot of history here, but honestly, not a whole lot left to see. You can park at either…read morethe bottom of an old road or at the top. Parking is easy in any case, and appears to be completely legal. On a prior visit I parked up at the top, so today I parked at the bottom, near the old power station. It's an easy 2-mile hike or so to get to the main ruins, if you start from the bottom road. There are occasionally bikers or hikers around--most of whom know about the history of this terrible event. Today I met a nice motorcyclist who gave me a few tips on interesting things to see in the area. The trail was actually flooded at the northernmost part of the road, so I could not easily go any further, but I still saw most of the old remains, or what's left anyway. The local Historical Society occasionally gives tours through the dan. I think that would be a better option, since they can better explain the history and highlight what one sees. Without a special guide, it's not obvious what you're seeing. For the geocachers in the group, there's half-a-dozen geocaches spread throughout the ruins. TIP: One thing I noticed is that the internet is very spotty in this area. So don't count on your smartphone being able to work. The internet was also bad when I continue driving north on my way to Palmdale. In fact I could not get any bars at all for quite a while. So all in all, I think it is worth the visit, but bring a knowledgeable guide with you.

My friend and I stopped by the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Interagency Visitor…read moreCenter this morning to pick up a trail map before we went running at Malibu Creek State Park. I expected a small office with a single desk where I'd request a map, pay my money, and be on my way. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a well-stocked gift shop with books, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area souvenirs, clothing, and other local gifts. They had Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area sweatshirts and t-shirts by American Apparel. They even had Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area magnets, water bottles, and water bottle carriers. Art pieces from local artists were also featured in the store. I had initially planned on picking up a $3 map of the Santa Monica Mountain trails but the helpful docent showed me some beautiful waterproof and tear resistant plastic Tom Harrison topographic maps. I ended up buying two - Malibu Creek State Park and Topanga State Park. They were $9.95 but I felt it was worth it - I figured I'd end up killing less trees in the long run if I could re-use the maps over and over. My friend picked up a jar of locally grown and made Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange jelly. I picked up a jar of locally grown honey. I'm not sure what the daily hours are but she said they were open from 7 am to 5 pm today (a Saturday). They also had very well maintained bathrooms so you could always swing by here, check out the awesome store, and use the facilities before you hit the trails. i think for a jail it was pretty good the process was smooth as far as staff i'm not so happy…read morethey're very rude i've been to many jails before since they have been transferring my boyfriend all around but i didn't like the staff attitude from this jail, other jails they were very happy to help you and answer all your questions especially if it was your first time visiting that specific facility. but like i said the process was smooth and at the end of the day as long as you see your loved ones that's all that matter. as far as the process goes for those of you visiting the first time this is how it goes after waiting in line and passing the metal detectors you go by the window there is a sign in paper you write your information and who you are visiting (you have to have their booking number and an valid id with you) then you get to the window give them the paper you filled out with your id and after they process that they tell you which bus you have to take you grab the paper and your id you walm towards the buses they're all numbered but if you're having a hard time there are 2 deputies that will help, after you sit in the bus they take you to the building if your appointment is at 9:30 best believe you have to wait another 30 mins there for them to open the door once they open the door you want to try and be the first to turn in the paper you filled out because usually they call in orders. once you give them the paper down the hall there is a very big area to sit and wait nobody is left standing and you have to pay attention when they call you (they call with the inmates names and last names) not yours. once you hear the inmates name you walk back to the deputy grab your paper and walk to the visiting room, once you get to the visiting room you give your paper to the deputy at the window he/she will tell you which window you have to go sit at and then you go sit and wait approximately 5-10mins they bring the inmates out! visits are only 30 minutes sometimes if you're visiting someone that is a keep away you get longer visits although when you book the visit it says 30 but you usually do get longer visits for keep Aways only since there aren't a lot of people visiting the 900s. hope this helps! have a safe visit

After 17 long years of checking out the place, I have to say I'm happy to call it home for now. I…read moremean, where else can you wear shorts comfortably and then be snowboarding 60 minutes later? The location is great. The city planning was done pretty good too. There is not much to do here, which is also a good thing because this eliminates annoying foreigners and traffic. One of the best things about SF is that it does not operate under the city of Los Angeles. This makes for a comfortable and clean jailhouse, a separate budget, and city hall meetings where the resident's opinions actually matter. I have to say that city hall operates like a well oiled machine. They keep the lines short and do business quickly. Thanks for all those extensions that you granted me on my water bill. I wish it snowed because I love the cold. Low crime rate, clean streets, and quiet neighborhoods all add up to SF's small town feel. It is surrounded by Sylmar and Pacoima but other than that, great place to grow up.

Not a day went by when I would look at my surroundings, how well the streets were maintained, how quiet the neighborhood was, the low crime rate (especially with Pacoima, kill or be killed being so close) I never attended a city council meeting, but I have nopproblem believing the Other guy who mentioned how responsive the council was. The only reason why I moved to Sylmar (piece of crap a cut above Pacoima) is because my section8 came through, and the only place that would take it was there. There was a place in San Fernando that I was really hoping to get into. The only reason I live in Long Beach now is the bus system up there is a major piece of crap. No matter where I lay my head at night, the city of San Fernando will always be my home!

How is that the Encino Chamber's problem? Here's what I like about theencino chamber. Interesting lunch speakers Marketing seminar, and support when needed Lots of past presidents- unlike other chambers where the presidents and chairs disappear... speaks of the value the chamber has for it's members. A genuine concern for the community. The Disaster Prep committee is available to non-members. The chamber has a some other committee and events that don't seem to promote business, but promote a good community. It's like a Rotary group that split off to create a small business group, but still has its heart on community work. Yes it's a smaller chamber than some of the surronding groups. But that feels to be changing. The neighboring chambers cater to big donors and are concerned only with adding members. Once they have you as a member they seem to forget about you unless you have something they want for free. The encino chamber treats everyone the same.
