I was visiting for the weekend and looking for places to go dancing. It was so hard, but after a while, I'm glad I heard about this social. For those who are unfamiliar with the Afro-Caribbean/Latin dance world, for many people in the dance community, social dancing is the main reason we decided to start dancing Salsa/Bachata/Merengue/Cumbia, etc.
It has two aspects to it: the obvious social one --providing an opportunity to meet other people with the same interest --and dancing - connecting with a partner to create an in-the-moment, completely improvised, spontaneous dance to a song. It's super fun to dance with someone for the first time and try to figure out each other's styles. That's why I enjoy going dancing when traveling.
This social is held every 2nd & 4th Saturday inside the Millenium Dance Complex. I was told to look for the stairs and lights, but it was the music that helped me find them. There's an hour dance lesson at 9:30pm and the social is from 10:30pm to 1:30am. Cover is $13 and they have water bottles for $1. The place is a dance studio so there's smooth floors and mirrors on the wall. It is spacious enough to where you don't have to worry about bumping people too much. Also, the music was on point! They played a wide range including Cumbia, Dominican Bachata and classic Salsa songs. I had a blast. Highly recommend! read more
