The building itself is VERY Lyon, with the classic stacked staircases look you'll see throughout the old city and its traboules. But the rooms are weird. We stayed in one of the Ateliers suites. Ours was film themed. It was strange that the bathroom was along the staircase to the master bedroom, like you walked past the sink and drying off area. But then the toilet was downstairs without a sink. And there seems to be many technical issues. Ours was that the internet barely worked. There was one area my iPhone would work, but my wife's Android wouldn't connect from anywhere. Other reviews also seem to indicate that air conditioning is not reliable (but we came in November). Making up for it all though is the service. The concierge was great. The bar had excellent cocktails. The restaurant is renowned. I am happy we stayed here but in the future I'd probably stay someplace more updated, probably in the 1st arrondissement, where it would be easier to explore the entire city.

We finally were told that the hotel was closing next week for about a six-month renovation! But we were not given a reduction in the top-tier room rates we paid. The rooms were quiet because the old walls are so thick, but it would be easy to fall on one of the old, windy stone staircases linking the rooms. I will be curious about how much money will be spent to bring this old abbey into the 21st century!

The hot chocolate is the real deal, rich chocolate that you add hot milk to to reduce the thick, creamy richness of it. So good. order it! I think they are known for their pastries so order a few brioche, rolls, etc. I wish I knew the french word for the roll we had as that was one of the best we've ever had.. sweet, but not too sweet, soft/airy, buttery with the outside having a nice crispy (flakey) texture. She just turned 12 last week and so with so much joy and excitement, they went to the cafe. The woman (red-haired) opened the door with NO smile, NO friendliness and even after my husband said with so much joy that our daughter was 12. Guess what her reaction was? She said, "Is she really 12?" She was mean and gave terrible customer service. Why would she start with such distrust when he just said our daughter was 12 and had been waiting for a year to come? On the other hand, there was a woman with dark hair who was VERY kind. She smiled and welcomed them and the customer service was excellent. She explained about the cheesecake, different types of milk, etc. We have lived in France for almost 7 years and are TIRED of awful service. Please tell the dark-haired worker she did a great job and ask the red-haired woman to consider her actions because it brings down your reputation. We hope to have a better experience next time.
