The biggest and most popular Mexican restaurant in Roxboro. This place runs like a well-oiled machined. Always well staffed, I've never waited more than a couple SECONDS for a table. The menu is substantial, lots of choices. Chips and salsa are above average. My go- to is the Tommy salad (named for a regular). It is chicken, steak and shrimp prepared fajita style served on a bed of lettuce with jalepeños, cheese and cucumber slices around the side of the plate. Promptly seated and water brought to the table on request. I liked that they asked if I wanted lemon or not. A huge menu of selections- which is almost always a danger sign to me- was presented. Chips and salsa presented. Chips good, salsa served in a carafe ( to pour in a bowl- I don't get why they would want to wash more dishes) salsa was "store bought" quality and zero spice. I asked for something spicier and they brought out a bowl of very spicy ( again, pretty sure it was canned) ancho sauce. Chile verde was pork chunks heated in canned Herdez green tomatillo sauce. Bland and uninspired. (It made glad I didn't order the carnitas instead) Mexican rice was good/ acceptable/ average. Flavorless Refritos were mashed/ blended canned beans ( or re-constituted) with no flavor at all. There was a very thin layer of white cheese on the beans. Come on guys, you could have at least bougied up the refried beans with some manteca. They were just not worth consuming. I saw some margaritas served at another table that looked awesome. Service and attention very good. Friendly folks. Low end Mexican food served at mostly cheap prices- you get what you pay for. Quality and flavor of food is at the bottom. Most consistent, great food in Roxboro, NC. They have the best margaritas with free chips and salsa, which are also the best of any other Mexican restaurant in this area. I have eaten and many and to be honest, never really had a bad experience at any of them but the staff here are tops and their food is perfection! I almost always get 2 tacos with beans and rice and La Cocina is the only Mexican restaurant I have been to that puts the tacos on a separate plate from the beans and rice so I don't end up with soggy tacos! read more

I am from CA so this is not the type of Mexican food I'm used to eating. But, the food is very good. I love their fajitas and have enjoyed everything I have tried on the menu. I love this place. On occasion my husband and I have even come just for coffee and fried ice cream. The service is excellent and we have always had a good experience with every one of their servers. The owner is often there when we go and is so welcoming, friendly and wonderful to us. We've been coming here for years now. So, during COVID when we can't always eat in, we have ordered food for pick up and brought it home. It is always tasty and there is so much we have leftovers for the next day. I would recommend it. Service is good. Been here twice now. First time had chilaquiles. They were NOT chilaquiles. Bland, chips were super soggy and red sauce. Green sauce is correct. This time had a Guadalajara plate. Pretty much a taste of the whole menu. They threw everything on it so I felt like I was eating from a trough. They don't season their meat, or anything for that matter. Tamale was soggy and bland. Flautas burnt and bland. No sauce. I didn't even eat any of the other stuff because it was a huge pile of bland mush. It looked like when you put all the leftovers in your dog's bowl. Me and my husband are avid Mexican restaurant eaters. If there's a Mexican place close by, 9 times out of 10 we will go eat there. This place caught our eye like every other place has with its awesome reviews and as we pulled in, a packed parking lot. This was probably the worst place we have ever eaten. My husbands shrimp was bad. He could tell at the last bite after it was combined and mixed up with everything. The rice tasted like it had been stored and absorbed the flavor of rotten meat that may have been sitting next to it. The pico on my burrito was very old and had started to meld colors together (the purple onion had started to get a red and green tint from the tomato and cilantro). My knife in my silverware set had dried food stuck on it and the margarita I ordered tasted like straight mixer. This is the FIRST review I have ever written and hopefully my last. We are not from the area but my husband comes to work up here every now and then. This is one place I don't think we will ever go back to. read more

Get there early for lunch because it gets busy by noon, but they put food on your table fast and with a smile. Friendly people, freshly made chips and salsa, with reasonable prices for the huge perfectly cooked portions you get. We start with "special beef fajitas nachos ($12.50)" to share with the table. We usually get the lunch Texas fajitas (my personal favorite), Bowls of Chilli or (Mexican) Chicken soup, Chile Colorado or one of the many tasty combination plates. I really tried to like this place and went a few times to support it. Unfortunately every time we went, it wasn't a great experience. The food was just average. The bigger problem for me was the atmosphere. I'm not sure if it's the customers or the acoustics, but every time we couldn't enjoy our meal because of the noise from other people. The last time we went was the last straw for me. Another table's children were yelling and running around and neither the parents nor the staff did anything about it.
