I absolutely loved the '50s vibe!…read more The colors, outfits, hairstyles, and décor really made you feel like you stepped back in time when life seemed a little simpler. I especially loved all the old-school photos on the walls it added so much character and nostalgia. The food was okay overall. The wings were good, and the fish & chips were decent, but my daughter loved them! The Cobb salad and chili were both just okay. The Fruity Pebbles shake and cinnamon toast crunch shake was REALLY good! Overall, I'd come back for the vibe and experience more than the food. They also have an arcade, which makes it even more fun, especially if you're bringing the kids. Definitely a cute, nostalgic spot to check out!

We were seated quickly which was a wonderful thing considering we had 3 kids with us. Our server was Frenchie and she was great. Our food was surprisingly hot. Our first notice to the oddness of the night was the balloon guy. Throughout the night we noticed the servers would form groups of 5 plus to sing birthday songs for the birthday kids. When it came to our turn, we had only 2 servers show up to sing for us. Frenchie even yelled out for help with no one coming to help out with making this evening special for us. One guy came by but quickly made a left to go into another area. Our little guy didn't notice because Frenchie made him feel special. As we sat there questioning what just happened, we noticed that 4 tables down someone was getting sung to. Guess how many were there singing? A minimum of 5 servers. We also noticed that we were not offered the birthday hats that that same party received. We asked to speak with a manager regarding what just happened. Ricky made excuses for what we observed and how we felt regarding what happened. My wife got upset at him minimizing our experience. When he noticed her tone change, he changed accordingly. He recommended we speak with the GM. We paid $200 for our meal and nowhere in that amount did we ask that we be looked over and go unnoticed. From where we sat, I was able to see the majority of the area. I don't know if there is a moral to this story or a silver lining but this experience ruined our evening and a little boy's 7th birthday. Im not saying to not eat here but i am saying that if you are a person of color, keep your eyes open to how you're being treated.

Surely they are masters at greasy bacon and eggs, day old coffee, and probably little else. Wrong. Very wrong. This place may look a little ordinary from the outside but there is nothing ordinary about it. It may look like a classic diner inside but it does not sling food like an old diner. The menu is well-written and the food is high quality, excellent, and borderline gourmet. Do not order eggs, bacon, and toast here. Swing for the cheap seats. We tried the Ham, Avocado and Tomato Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was fantastic. If I didn't care about remaining somewhere under 350 pounds, I would return every Saturday and eat my way through every single eggs benedict concoction on the menu and there are many such benedict creations from which to choose. The Banana Nutella crepe, with "whip" cream (not "whipped," apparently, we're gentle with our cream here, folks), was decadent. If you like your breakfasts on the sweet side, you will enjoy this one. The Tres Porkitos omelet (made with ham, bacon, sausage, and cheese) was hearty and just as good as it sounds. The breakfast potatoes were very nicely done but could have used a little more seasoning. There is a salt shaker (and numerous hot sauces) on the table for just these types of emergencies. Do NOT leave here without getting a freshly-made biscuit with butter and honey on the side. You have made a serious error in judgment if you leave without getting one of these. Even the freshly-squeezed orange juice was delicious. Our server was wonderful. No complaints. They have dining inside or on the patio. Encinitas is a delightful community. While I loved the old school diner feel inside, you cannot go wrong with the people watching outside on one of our almost always sunny days in So Cal. If you live here, you already pay the Sunshine Tax so get your money's worth and sit outside, if you can. 10 stars.

They have two dirty high chairs and one of them was missing safety straps. The service was ok. Update: The owner's response to my review was simply, "Yeah relax." Unfortunately, that response reinforces the concerns I had about this business. Rather than addressing the issues I raised--food quality, cleanliness, and child safety--they chose to dismiss a customer's honest feedback. Reviews exist to help businesses improve and to inform other customers about their experiences. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful; I was sharing what we genuinely experienced. A professional response would have acknowledged the concerns or explained how they planned to address them. Instead, the dismissive reply speaks volumes about how customer feedback is valued here. Based on both our visit and the owner's response, I won't be returning, and I hope they choose to take customer concerns more seriously in the future.

Beginner's Diner - Reuben Sandwich. The flavors hit a great balance of savory and tangy. Curly fries on the side were perfectly crispy.

Things we ordered: Pickled Plate 9/10 - kind of a lot of garlic but the mushrooms were INSANE. Crudités 8/10 - quality ranch for dipping, great variety of veggies to help balance a typically fatty, high calorie diner menu. Tuna Melt 9/10 - would come back specifically for this sandwich. Very tasty and kid approved Club Sandwich 8/10 - my typical diner order, they go heavy on the lettuce, topping were loaded up towards the front of the sandwich so after the first few bites it's just bread. Tasted great though. Pot Roast 9/10 - great quality pot roast served with mashed potatoes and corn. Really delicious and would order again. Deviled Eggs 6/10 - standard. Nothing special. Flavors didn't boom or bust. My complaints: the few downsides to Beginner's Diner - their menu isn't 24hrs like most diners so you can't order breakfast items throughout the day which is always fun. Sodas don't come with free refills, they are bottled which is cool but I tend to like at least one refill instead of having to ration out my soda to last me the whole meal. Great spot for families. Kid approved. We will 100% come back and we recommend this spot to anyone looking for a cool dining experience.

They're also dog friendly, which is awesome so we opted to sit outside with the pups. Just a heads-up: It gets extremely hot on the patio. They don't have a large fan or cooling system, but they do have window shades that can be pulled down to help block some of the sun and heat. The service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive, checked on us regularly, and kept us updated on when our food would be coming out. She was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the: Country Fried Steak: this was by far the best country fried steak I've had in San Diego! It was absolutely huge. I ended up taking half of it home for leftovers. It was also loaded with gravy, which I loved. I got the mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli as my sides, and everything was delicious. They have a very extensive menu, and there are so many other things I want to come back and try. I honestly can't believe I've lived in San Diego for almost 10 years and am just now discovering this spot! Between the portions, prices, service, and quality of the food, this is definitely one of the best breakfast spots in San Diego. And the prices are awesome for what you get. I'll absolutely be back!

I was super excited to eat the food and feel nostalgic! My friend ordered avocado toast and I ordered fish tacos and fries. I am not often picky on taste, but these fries and fish tacos were the nastiest things I have ever had. I tried to just eat them, because a fry is just a potato? It can't really be that bad? But I had three and I had to stop eating everything. It was literally so gross. My friend said her avocado toast tasted like mold and she did not eat anything either. Definitely not going back, but I hope they can improve because it is a very cool inside atmosphere!
