Was expecting a lot and had high expectations when we came because it was so cute. We were seated on the outdoor patio and it had a lovely vibe. We got wine, which I wasn't impressed with. Wine in a hot place needs to be extremely well-chilled and this was lukewarm. I also asked for dry wine and the waiter wasn't able to advise me on which one, but still had high hopes. 30 minutes after ordering, we began to notice that tables around us were very unhappy. Multiple tables left complaining about the service, with one asking for a free dessert because their entree never arrived. After 40 minutes, we asked about our food, and were only then told that a key ingredient was missing and there would be 10 min more to wait. We ended up just leaving instead. I think they were just having an off day, which is fine, except why didn't they just tell us, apologize for not having a server, or give us a head's up until we asked? Also, the restaurant was not busy, so it seems odd that all the tables were so unhappy. read more

Our first night at La Cigale was Wednesday, January 22nd- and everything was so extremely delicious that we have made a reservation for Friday the 24th (our final night in PV) The Versalles neighborhood is lucky to have many "good" restaurants (La Tosca, Barrio Bistro, Opa, Olive, etc.), but La Cigale is the "crown jewel" of the area. Delicious well presented dishes. A wonderful atmosphere and so easy to reach and the go for a walk on the Malecon.

It took one hour to receive our appetizer. Luckily we ordered our dinner early and was late also. They said the beef bourguignon was frozen so I didn't order that. They said the shrimp mushroom pastry was fresh. The pastry shell was inedible. The pastry was probably tough from being frozen and then thawed out in a microwave. The mussels were good but you couldn't reach the broth in the bottom of the silly small pot they served it in. Ask them for a bowl if you go. Our friend went there two nights before and said it was wonderful. I now will never go to a restaurant that my friend suggests again. It was more expensive than La Capella and by far not as nice. We didn't want to even try the deserts. On the good side the oil and vinegar dressing on the salad was good. The margaritas were good. The bartender was slow. The manager was there, but I was pleasant to him and didn't say anything, just smiled. read more

We just finished a wonderful dinner at La Cigale. We had the Salmon, onion soup and few other things and everything was exquisite. The owner is so attentive and came to all the tables to make sure everything was fine. The waitress was very attentive and kind. The atmosphere of this place will take you back to a French bistro in Paris but you are right in this beautiful Versalles neighborhood eight here in PV. This place deserves six stars! Everything was perfection. The waiter was beyond outstanding with excellent all around staff. I ordered burgundy be, and it was the best I've ever tasted. Literally everything down to the pasta was cooked to perfection. Beef was soft, flavorful, not over powering with perfect texture and flavor. We had a pate for an appetizer and cream puffs for dessert. Everything we eat just seem to get better and better. The food hasn't been consistent. I've been going to this restaurant for 6 years plus. Not sure if the restaurant hired a new chef but the meals need to improve. The owner needs to pay attention on the meals the Chef prepares. If it looks or taste bad don't serve it to your customers. I could have made dinner at home. read more

Not going to lie, the wait time for food is really long. Probably due to the kitchen being tiny and it's difficult to find staff these days. So, don't go here if you are ravenous, only if you want a slow, leisurely meal. Second, the food is OK. Goat cheese salad and profiteroles were enjoyable but the sea scallop puff pastry was kinda meh (mostly just mushrooms) and the escargot was odd/mealy and hangar steak was questionable. French bistro food. A wonderful change with nary a totopo in sight. We received excellent service from Edson Reyes whose French is way better than mine. We started out with the house white wine, a French chardonnay that came in an unlaced bottle. Quite drinkable. And, went well with... Salade Niçoise - lettuce, seared tuna (seasoned perfectly), warm potato, haricots verte, egg, tomato, and canned black olives. Very good construction and taste. Next, a bottle of Chilean Camenère - Morandé Valle del Maipo, 2015. Good fruit, but a bit too much tannin. Steak (tenderloin) and frites. The beef was very tender and cooked à point as desired. The fries were crispy. Profiteroles and coffee for dessert. OMG delicious. And, last, a homemade basil infused vodka as a final treat. + Atmosphere (inside) - very bistro like. I know it was contrived, but it is fun and enjoyable. + Bread & butter. Almost French bread with a crispy crust. + Cloth napkins. A b it small and 100% polyester. + Music - traditional French. We walked past this place several times and on this trip decided to stop in. This is such a cute restaurant - just like a small place in Paris. Inside there are many decorations that take you back to France and there is this lovely patio and if you sit in the right spot, you can see the ocean in the distance. We sat outside and started with two glasses of house wine (very nice generous pours). We had: - Onion soup - they split it for us and it was like two normal bowls of onion soup. We told the waiter we only ordered one soup and he said it is one split into two bowls! It was absolutely delicious. - Cocotte La Cigale - very tasty - Grilled artichoke with this wonderful aioli - perfectly done! We took most of it back to the room because the starters and bread were filling. - Profiteroles were wonderful for dessert The servers were very friendly and were always accomodating. It was not too busy because we arrived there at 5:00 p.m. and we did not have a reservation. We were seated immediately outside. The food took a while to arrive but we were not in a hurry so we didn't mind. There were other dishes that we saw come out that I would love to try next time. Our bill came to $765 MX (without tip) which is about $39 US - very reasonable. Definitely will return to experience more good French food! read more

Stopped here for a quick drink and some snacks during our trip to PV. Cute romantic spot right next to the popular church. The service was great, even though our server forgot to put in our order or frites, they made up for it by giving us an aperitif on the house. For the actual food, escargot was pretty good, true to all the other French escargots I have tried. The house appetizer was pretty good and the bread was very soft and warm. The foie gras terrine was okay... not the best I've tried, but not bad either. A little less creamy than I'm used to and a little more bland than I'm used to, maybe not enough Sauternes and sel and pepper used in the making. In addition I was surprised it was not served with some sort of jelly, jam, preserve or fruit... Either way I still recommend this spot as it is very cute and decent French food. La Cigale Versalles... wanted to love it, but as someone who enjoys good food, sadly cannot recommend it... friendly crew but...

Our visit to La Cigale was spontaneous, initiated by a list of restaurants participating in "Restaurant Week PV." The restaurant has a lovely outdoor eating area and the indoor area is pleasant enough. The wait-staff was pleasant and courteous. Unfortunately though, the wait-staff was terribly inexperience. Our waiter came to our table two times to take our order. He had completely forgotten that he took our order just five minutes earlier. My cocktail was delivered but I had to get up from the table to remind a waiter to bring my wife her glass of wine. I ordered steak and fries. The fries were very good, the steak was pretty typically disappointing as is often the case in Mexico. My wife had chicken in a puff pastry that looked like it could have been a Swanson Chicken Pot Pie I remember from my youth. She complained the chicken was dry and tough. There were several "regulars" dining and it appeared the French Onion Soup was pretty popular. I would consider returning to La Cigale for French Onion Soup and a glass of wine at an outdoor table. I'm thinking if I closed my eyes and had more than one glass of wine I might be able to imagine being at a French Bistro in the French countryside. Well that might be a stretch regardless of my wine consumption. read more

We have eaten here several times during the last couple of weeks. This restaurant is amazing. My only complaint is that their French bread is horrible. I do not understand how a French restaurant can have horrible French bread that is obviously not made fresh daily!!! read more

Made our annual pilgrimage to La Cigale. This time with our younger daughter and her family. All six of us had their excellent French Onion Soup. We were happy that La Cigale will split the order. That enabled us to order additional dishes. We enjoyed the Escargot, Penne in Vodka Sauce, Foie Gras Terrine, Beef Bourgogne, Mini Cocotte and Steak Tartare. We had an excellent authentic French meal at this wonderful restaurant. We ordered two drinks, the French onion soup which was delicious, escargots, mussels in cream sauce, the stuffed portobello and a crepe for dessert. Just had a wonderful dinner here with my family. If you love Paris and want to step back into time this is the place. Service is great but not rushed. Drinks and wine are wonderful. The ambiance is magical and the food is absolutely delicious. We started with escargot and baked Brie. Both so authentic. They have a daily prix fixed and at $255 pesos unbeatable. We had French onion soup, steak and frites and crepes all perfectly prepared. My daughters had chicken cordon blu wonderful and a puff pastry with creamed mushrooms. We really really enjoyed our little night in The heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta but felt like we were in a Paris Bistro. A must for every time we visit. read more

Very cold service. One of the worst martinis I have had... over shaken, so, very watery, very small and in a large martini glass...not even half full. Tenderloin Au Poivre was so tough it couldn't be cut or chewed. French fries were over salted and laden with garlic salt...never had that in France! Onion soup was actually OK. Bread was definately not a baguette. Chicken liver salad was inedible. Wanted desert but was cutting my losses and ended the experience. There are so many better options. I had eaten there about 5 years ago and decided to give it another chance due to high ratings...it was still awful. Don't waste your time. It really is the definition of "A Wonderful Little French Bistro." PV is so lucky to have a diverse restaurant scene and La Cigale is the cornerstone of the French food world. They make an incredible French Onion Soup. Their Boef Borguinon is truly an incredible beef stew. Their White Wine Chicken was so good and then the desert with the puffs filled with specially crafted vanilla ice cream. All to DIE FOR! Just amazing across the board. Their location is from the big Our Lady of Guadeloupe Church and just 2 blocks down the one way street from there. So good!!! read more

Yikes - run away! After passing by the restaurant on a previous evening and seeing the nice outdoor cafe atmosphere I was hopeful of finding a nice French Restaurant in the area that wasn't super expensive. The 4 stars here on yelp gave me enough confidence to make a reservation. We were seated at decent table, but it took some time to get someone to take and deliver our drinks. No problem, I'm on vacation, I can wait. I cut everyone's level of service some slack during COVID times. The reason you should run away though is the atrocious quality of the food. We ordered the grilled artichoke as an appetizer and it showed up refrigerator temperature cold on the inside leaving me to conclude that it was frozen and then not adequately grilled. Can you actually get a frozen artichoke to taste good grilled. The taste was awful and I did what I rarely do, sent it back to the kitchen. It shows back up 10 minutes later, cooked more, but tasting just as awful. This was one of the worst dishes I have ever been served in my entire life. Entrees for the rest of our group were also very disappointing. In the end, trying to get them to let us pay so we could escape the horror also took a painfully long time. Atmosphere - charming, comfortable. Service - helpful, friendly, warm. Drinks - all good, nothing "fancy", and as previous reviewer says, a bottle of wine adds to the ambiance. Food - Pork chop was excellent, onion soup reviews (Trip Advisor and others) are accurate. Very tasty, good depth of flavor, and the ingredients are in harmony. Would order it every time without hesitation. Foie gras was a delightful shared appetizer. Looking around at other plates, it was one of those times where you wanted to try this, try that - from what I could hear and see everyone seemed to enjoy whatever they had ordered. Location - same block as the Guadalupe Cathedral. Listening to the people walk by, the children playing outside an open window, the church bells ringing, added to the experience.
