Wow! This place will give Casteñedas restaurant down the 29 Palms Highway some serious competition. I did their carne asada street taco combo plate and I am glad I did. Their style differs a bit from Casteñedas in that Casteñedas quick fries their double corn tortillas and that really adds flavor and a nice chew. La Caguama, on the other hand, keeps their double corn tortillas fresh. What was surprising was the beefiness of their carne. It almost tasted like pot roast--delicious and craveable. Their salsas are decent, typical, but uninspired. Still, this is on my radar, plus it's literally one block away from my new favorite place to stay in Joshua Tree/Yucca Valley the Field Station. We stopped by this restaurant after exploring Joshua Tree, and this was great to refuel. The best thing on the menu, in my opinion, is the horchata. It's $8 but it's a big container. It's made fresh everyday. The staff are all very nice too. We ordered the octopus plate, al pastor torta, a few birria tacos. The birria tacos were our favorites and we only ordered one at first but then ordered a couple more. You get a good amount of food when you order the dishes which is always nice. We even came back the next day just for the horchata. If anything, at least get that. read more

Ordered the Asada nachos to go. The meat was not very good and was tough. However, the guacamole was so fresh and some of the best that I've had. After spending the day in the park, decided to stop by for a quick bite. Queso birria was yummy and filling. Horchata and pineapple agua fresca were refreshing and delicious, perfect after spending the day in the dessert! This is a good place to stop at when you're in Joshua Tree. It is very easy to find. The menu has a huge selection of items. And they also have a huge selection of drinks. Highly recommend, if you want Mexican food. It is clean and the art on the walls is nice to look at. read more

My wife were looking for a place to have dinner and we stop at this place. We got seated immediately and were served water, chips and salsa. My wife and I each got an agues fresca and they were huge. My wife got a taco and while the menu says it comes with pinto beans and corn tortilla, however after we got our food our waitress said it didn't. I ordered a combination taco platter and got rice and beans. We ended up ordering a side a Mexican corn as well. I thought the Mexican corn was a bit watery and lacked flavor. It's not easy to get good birria in Southern CA. And it's definitely not easy to find it in the high desert. That's what makes this especially fantastic. Shown is the Caldo de Birria (birria soup), a slow-cooked beef soup, in this case, served with tortillas and diced onions and cilantro and four slices of lime. Delicious, very tender, and good cuts of beef. The first time I had birria was from a noted chef of a restaurant from central Mexico. I was hooked, utterly hooked, and every other time I've had birria, I've hoped that it would be as good as that. While none have ever matched them, some have been super delicious. And I'm happy to say that La Caguama is one of them. And for it to be near my house is even better. The horchata came in an enormous mug that you could go scuba diving in. It was good, more of a sort of frothy, almost slushy version of horchata that I'm not used to, but was tasty nonetheless. And did I mention that it was H-U-G-E? Good friendly service, lots of large frescoes of Vicente Fernández and Frida Kahlo as well as those old Mexican stand-bys, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe (just kidding). Comfortable large space. I've been wanting to try their oysters on the half shell. They did not disappoint! Had them with shrimp ceviche on top of them and they brought out a very spicy sauce as well because I asked for something very spicy. I think they made it just for me because I've never seen that sauce before there. The sauce looked like a mole sauce, very dark and quite tasty. Also squeezed all the limes on them and added tapatio sauce. I was hesitant to order these until now. During a previous visit the server assured me they are quite fresh and they get them daily and are quite popular. If you like oysters I highly recommend. We really love coming here! The tacos are so freakin good. I love that they add pinto beans to the tacos. The chicken was delicious too. I don't know what kind of marinade it is for the chicken but it was so good and not dry at all. I love that they have keto options too. We usually get our tacos from the taco stand by Walmart but the carne asada tacos here are better and the taco stand ones are really good so we found our new taco place. I ordered the shredded beef enchiladas verde and it was very flavorful. The green salsa was a little spicy but in a great way. Partner ordered the asada plate and the meat was perfectly seasoned! We used to come here every week for dinner. They messed up our orders a few times but nothing major. Last night everything changed. Their prices jumped up so drastically, we will not be coming back. My son used to get a kids enchilada for 8 bucks, all of the sudden they don't have it. We ended up getting 2 CHEESE enchiladas for him and it was $16.99. No meat, just cheese. Then on the bill, we noticed we were charged for a refill of our tiny basket of chips. 3 of us and it was 48 bucks. We usually spend around $34. I understand things have gone up but the portions looked smaller, the quality has also decreased and the service was fair at best. It's a shame because we liked it here but we are done. read more

Overpriced $10 for such a small slice. The kids meal cheese quesdilla had no taste and my nephew threw it away. The ambiance was very noisy. An older crowd when I was there on Wednesday night. My friend loved the Mexican corn which is just one cob cut in 4 pieces for $5.00.... The veggie burrito was really good. Very tasty and delicious. I liked they had pinto and black beans, not refried beans. I do hope they remember to put the chips & utensils in the take out bag next time.
