There's something sexy about La Buvette. Maybe it's the font, or the gilded panels, or the sidewalk tables under the leafy trees, but I just feel much more posh, put together and chic than I actually am when I'm sitting here. I feel so much more 'La Buvette' than 'The Refreshment Stand.' And that feeling is addictive. It could also be the food. As you'd pick up from the telltale noun gendering, the menu is French inspired with an Aussie twist. So while you'll surly find your Salad Niçoise, crêpes and baguettes, you'll also sit down to one of Sydney's best breakfasts and killer coffees. The vegan brekkie is a standout, as are the strawberry pancakes and eggs bene. The specials on the blackboard are drool-inducing as well, but I can never make it past the breakfast menu. read more

This is, without doubt, my favorite brunch place in Sydney. The coffee is so reliably good you could time your watch by it. Everything they do, they do well: the wait staff are always friendly, the location is great (the footpath has just been expanded into the road so there's more outdoor seating than there used to be)... and you're never let down by the food. After many mornings walking past La Buvette in favour of Fratelli Paradiso over the road - and only because there is rarely a table free - last week I finally scored a seat for brekkie at this Potts Point stalwart. It seems at some point this gold-fronted, all-day diner needed to expand; they occupy a second, adjacent shopfront with an awkwardly placed wall in between the two - kitchen on one side, barista on the other - but manage to sprawl their seating across the length of the pavement outside. Service was hasty but friendly, and our meals arrived just as fast. The breakfast menu is lengthy, serving up the usual mod oz suspects - granola with fruit and yoghurt, corn fritters, poached eggs with sourdough and a selection of add-on side dishes, and the like. I opted for their namesake Croque Buvette, an open-faced grilled brioche sandwich topped with leg ham and melted gruyere. With a coffee each, our meal came in at about $15 per person; a pretty impressive price in this often expensive area. read more

My wife and I sat down, served quickly and atmosphere really good. We felt like we were back in France. A good start! I had the Croque Madame which was delicious. My only wish was that the sandwich itself was a bit crispier rather than slightly soggy. My wife had the eggs rolled in duka with feta on pita bread with a side if bacon. Unfortunately this dish was a bit of a let down. Pita bread was stale, toppings were delicious but sparse and the side of bacon? That turned up 10 min after we received our meals and was underdone. Coffee was average at best. Drinkable but not without needed sugar. Shot was over extracted and bitter. Overall was it worth the trek to check out? Probably. Would I make it again? Probably not. I often walk past La Buvette as it is around the corner from my friend Gonzie's in Potts Point and it appears to be one of the busiest cafés in the area, it is always packed. Finally I sampled the food, it was good but not spectacular, the menu makes it look a bit more exciting than it actually was, but it was still quite nice. I would have ordered the roast chicken, with roasted cauliflower, parmesan & walnut with rosemary, but it comes with an orange sauce which put me off a bit (never been a fan of orange sauces) and I'm not much of one for parmesan either. So I settled on the Caramelised pork with sautéed potatoes, peas and mushrooms. It's quite a nice place to sit on a nice sunny day as you can sit outside, the food is not over priced and the service is good. read more

Very nice place. Lovely outdoor seating on a hot summer morning already. We had good cuppa s and ordered pancakes and French Toast. They use real maple syrup. We also had bacon . The bacon was more like ham in a sense. It looked under cooked but I like that. Yes Mom again who ate raw bacon as a girl. I can eat that . ( go on make a face!! Ha) otherwise it was so delicious. The staff was so friendly and fun! I always wonder about tipping though it seems some places accept tips others don't. I would too this place cause they are super yummy food and pleasant staff and good service. read more

My husband and I were recently visiting Sydney from NYC. Throughout our stay, we tried some truly amazing eateries in the Potts Point area where we were staying. La Buvette was the standout disappointment. One morning, wanting a hearty and satisfying breakfast, we decided to give it a shot. I ordered the croque and my husband had one of the breakfast/brunch specials. I'm not sure if the proprietors know what a croque madame or monsieur is supposed to taste like but this was far from it... and disgusting. The bread was all wrong and saturated in mustard. Not Dijon mustard but yellow mustard. And the egg was overcooked. We were starving so I ate most of it and it made me so ill that I threw up in a public toilet half an hour later. My husband's didn't do much better but managed to keep it down. Sorry to be so harsh but if you're coming from the context of knowing good food, this will leave you feeling sad, mad, and possibly bad. I'd skip it. read more

Potts Point is a gorgeous older neighborhood of Sydney and I shouldn't feel surprised to find great little cafes tucked around every corner. I was in the area and searching for just that thing yesterday and happy to find it in La Buvette. The cafe was bustling but still had plenty of room for my group. The coffee was prompt and delicious. I ordered the green eggs and ham which was really nice: perfect combination of scrambled eggs, pesto, rocket and ham. Also, they gave you two large slices of bread which is the winning ratio of egg to bread. My friend also demolished his breakfasts burrito which is a good sign it was tasty. All in all, couldn't ask for a better cafe in a leafy street setting. read more

We all know the cafe culture in Sydney is pretty good, we've all been disappointed when going to other cities and finding that they don't quite reach the standards of the simple Sydney Cafe staples we know and love. But what if you are hungrier than usual? Perchance you may have had what could only be described as an EPIC night out and have slept for a mere two hours thirty three minutes and sixteen seconds... You're veritably starving... You can't concentrate... you've ordered your coffee and its half drunk due to dehydration the wait staff return, you need to order, your eyes arrive upon the Big Breakfast... Eggs - Check Toast - Check Snags - Check (Not pork but I am hung-over remember so will let this slide) Beans - (I love beans) CHECK Bacon - {it's all here; you gently murmur whilst the wait staff start to look mildly concerned} Check Token Greenage to make me feel better about the terrific Calorific intake - Roger That! {Radio Crackles} " uh ten four we have a Green Light on Big Brekky, we are going in Weapons Hot {More Radio static} "Do you want another coffee" the fugue state broken as I crash back to the reality of this review. So I had the Big Brekky. While staying in Potts Point I quickly take note that most coffee places close at 4pm. And I thought I'd left the early closing times in Brisbane! I promptly took the opportunity to escape for a spot of fresh air during an afternoon break in my schedule and ventured to La Buvette just as they were beginning to close for the afternoon. Very comfortable place to watch the buzz of Potts Point pass you by. Coffee was very good, but I asked for an ice coffee and got a regular cup along with a glass of ice. Didn't think my request would throw them for a loop but I'm glad they tried. Busy little spot which doesn't have Wi-Fi, but if you ask the staff they'll give you the password for the signal from the fish shop across the street. read more

Treated like a criminal for no reason at all! I'm a sailor in Royal Australian Navy and this morning (30 jan 14) I decided to get a coffee from La Buvette. I was in uniform. I ordered a "medium" strong latte but was told that they only had large or regular. Sorry? I thought medium meant regular... Anyway, I sat down to drink my coffee and proceeded to eat sushi that I had bought up the road. I was then very rudely told I wasn't allowed to eat my own food there. I replied by telling the waiter that it was a joke and I stopped eating. After about 5 minutes the owner returned and I could clearly see the staff and the owner talking about me and then overheard the owner call the police. I waited for the police to arrive but after half an hour I decided I had better things to do and started to leave, as I was leaving I heard the owner of the cafe on the phone to the police saying that he no longer needed them. The entire time I sat there I felt very uncomfortable and on edge. I will certainly not be going back there! read more

I love this place. During my extended stay in Potts Point I came here at least three times for breakfast. Sure it was about $20 USD but it was worth it. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the avocados were fresh and the bread was toasted perfectly. The only thing keeping La Buvette from five stars is that they just can't seem to get a soy milk hot chocolate right. They're close though, and they get extra points for that delightful Biscoff, but it just tastes a little too much of vanilla for me to give them 5 stars. Didn't get the opportunity to try them for lunch or dinner but plan on doing that next time. The staff are incredibly friendly and they do accept credit cards...even American Express! Such a rarity when traveling in Australia. MMMM...writing this review I just want to go there right now...if only it wasn't about 18 hours door to door to get there from Los Angeles. read more

I've been going to this place for a while now and didn't even recall the name. It's sometimes hard to find a parking space with the likes of Spring Espresso (next door), Fratelli Paridiso, Lotus (both across the street), The Sardine Room (down the block) and La Buvette all on the same block of Challis Ave. The café is pretty small and they only have about 4 small tables inside their corridor like space. There is additional seating outside, but the one-sided bench seating inside is much more comfortable and conducive to reading. The breakfast and lunch are always really good. They have a wonderful breakfast burrito that they grill so the wrap is nice and toasty. The coffee is always smooth and the staff is usually really nice and helpful (except for once when they said it was warmer outside than it was inside and my logic knew that it was better inside, but she insisted to seat us outside). They have a nice little selection of magazines (although I will always bring the paper) and since the space is small, it feels intimate and cozy. With reasonable prices, La Buvette is a great choice for food or coffee if you can score that an unmetered parking space and sit inside. read more

We visited based on a google search that they did a vegan breakfast. With it, you simply get a small portion of nicely cooked stir fried vegetables and a couple of pieces of bread for about $15. Not good value at all, despite it being tasty. The coffee was very good though. And the service very friendly. Wouldn't overly recommend it, but if you're near and desire a sit-down vegan breakfast, this place will do. read more

If you're a small party, snagging a table quickly shouldn't be too hard (albeit it may not be at a coveted outdoor spot). We went for a Sunday stroll looking for brunch in Potts Point and thought we'd never find the big brekky we were looking for, then stumbled upon this place. We actually did order the "big brekky" and the Nutella pancakes which were out of this world.
