This place was down the street from my hotel and the hotel coffee was . Decided to try the long black on a whim here and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Not only was the coffee good, but so was the service. I came back the next day to try the food and it was just as good. I had the avocado balsamic toast with an egg and it ended up being one of the best meals I had in Sydney. The place is small but they have outdoor seating so I didn't have to wait. It seems quite popular in the neighborhood as the 3 times I went there during my trip they always had all tables in use and people seated outside. Definitely give them a try! read more

A pleasant enough breakfast and lunch cafe. Great food. Homemade soup to kill for. (Where do they get their tomatoes? Their tomatoes are the greatest soup tomatoes anywhere.) Fine breads if you are up for sandwiches. My wife's scrambled eggs were first rate. The room itself is no great shakes. Sydney has some enormously atmospheric cafes. This is a leftover space on the ground floor of an ugly modern building. The inner space is twentieth-century and functional and not much else. (They do have cute stools though. Half of the stools have stuff you can read on them.) The crowd is upscale and older - People who earned their money long ago, or ten years ago, And can now sit in cafes at leisure. There is not much magic here ... But ya gotta love dem soups. read more

This place blew my mind the latte I got was probably the best I've had in a while. I also got the granola which was SO GOOD. My parents got the breakfast wrap which was unique as it had had chutney along with the eggs and bacon. Overall best cafe we visited while in Sydney. We ate here versus they have a "famous scrambled egg" dish. He really liked this dish. I got a cheese and chive sandwich with tomato relish as well as mild chorizo and a small egg scramble. I wasn't overly impressed--I prefer my food a little bolder--with more spice, seasoning, runny eggs--but it was fine for basic coffee shop food, which is what my husband wanted. The sandwich was basic, but well toasted and the cheese was well melted. The chorizo was as advertised--mild. I had a carbonated grapefruit drink, which was ok, sold commercial from a bottle. There is very little indoor seating, so we sat on the patio--windy and cool today. This isn't a bad place to have a light breakfast; this is what my husband wanted, and he enjoyed it. Just don't go here if you're wanting intense, flavorful, or decadent breakfast or brunch foods, which is what I usually want. They seem to have a heavily advertised coffee/espresso program, and many people were there just for coffee. This may be their true niche. read more

Another fantastic boutique artisan roastery has quietly popped up in Potts Point, and it did so in true gypsy fashion. What until last week had been a Toby's Estate is now Gypsy Espresso - a project from the bean-Deity that is Gavin from Single Origin (or so the twitters tell me). But name drip-dropping aside, this coffee is fantastic. It could have been hot caffeinated butter I actually had in my mouth, considering the beautiful, smooth and rich blend I was guzzling down (and subsequently wanting to bathe in). More importantly, the kind folks behind the counter are obviously doing what they love and that passion directly translates into the pour. In the brief time I was there I learned about their small roastery in Bondi, that they hand pick only Arabica beans, and that they all completely stand behind everything they serve. What's more, they stay open until 6pm and have what looks to be a cracking menu of breakfast and lunch items. Let's just say I'm certainly glad this Gypsy has settled here. read more

Understated yet there is energy every time one visits. The people are truly helpful, so pleasant and service happens in an efficient way. Gypsy Espresso is a welcome addition to the King's Cross/Potts Point area of Sydney. As annual visitors we have been looking for a truly excellent spot for coffee and are happy Gypsy has taken over the spot on Manning formerly occupied by a Toby's Estate outlet. The venue receives five stars for excellence of coffee, wonderful scrambled eggs and most importantly for the fabulous staff. Everyone working the machine can pull a truly lovely espresso and from same make a wonderful drink. In addition to being great baristas, the folks working at Gypsy are friendly and ready with a smile. Many of the patrons of Gypsy are obviously regulars with the staff seeming to recognize regulars after two visits. If we hadn't been working out way through the drinks offerings I suspect they would have known our favorites by the third visit. Gypsy is highly recommended by two confirmed coffee addicts and with its much-in-evidence following we can rest assured it will be serving its excellent product upon our return next year. read more

Gypsy espresso is a small cafe off the main strip in Kings Cross / Potts point. There are about 5 tables inside and a few out the front. They are known for their coffee and the staff have a great knowledge and advice of the coffee. Only too happy to provide me with a weak skim cap. I got it in a takeaway cup as I have a bit of an obsession with artwork cups! It is also a good coffee; gypsy roasters beans. I ordered the ancient grain, sweet corn, tomato, spinach and goats cheese, pumpkin seeds and yogurt dressing salad for my lunch. Absolutely delicious with a really nice dressing, and very healthy. Service was lovely; the barista notably very skilled and a good atmosphere in the cafe - particularly good lady working the till, seemed to know customers well. read more

O.M.G. Is this not the best place to cure a hangover? Indeed it is!! Friendly staff, smoothly blend coffee (very important), and the scrambled eggs on toast with mapled-caramelised bacon had saved my day. Until now, this is a go to place every weekend in spite of being hangover or sober. A great place to catch up with your fiends too. This could be my new favourite place for coffee in Potts Point. The coffee is great, and really well made. The staff are friendly, and whilst I took mine away it looks like it would be a great place to chill with friends outside on a nice sunny day. Only had the coffee here, so this review is only about the coffee. The coffee is good but not great, there is better coffee around the corner at Room 10. The staff is extremely friendly and the atmosphere is cosy and cool. But saying that if I just want a quick coffee I won't be coming here compared to Room 10. read more

5 stars for the coffee drinks 4 stars for the food First, I had a decaf flat white and the roast beef sandwich. The decaf beans are Swiss-Water process Sumatran and they make incredible espresso. It has a nice, casual bitterness with lots of deep, earthy flavors. After it sits for about 15 minutes, it develops a new sourness that is also subtle and not at all unpleasant. The foam was finely textured and the milk about as hot as it could be without hurting it (or me!). The roast beef sandwich was fine -- good even, but nowhere near as tasty as the coffee. The onions were nicely caramelized, but the sweetness overpowered the rest of the sandwich. Things that might have helped: more arugula and spicier mustard (though perhaps a little less of it). For second breakfast (breakfast dessert?), I had a decaf iced coffee and a warm cinnamon roll. Again the coffee blew away the food, though the pasty itself was quite good. The iced coffee is made with condensed milk and comes somewhere between what an American would call a "sweet iced latte" and a Thai iced coffee. The complexity of the espresso plays nicely with the sweet milk. The coffee is easily on par with the best coffee I've had in San Francisco, a place known for coffee snobbery. read more

I was in Potts Point for a week of work in Sydney and came her a few times to have great coffee, yummy sweets, and just relax either just before the lunch rush or after and think that if I lived in this part of town I would come here every day. I tended to make myself breakfast, but the soft boiled eggs I saw here made me rethink that plan since they were perfect looking. All in all the friendly staff and good cakes made this my favorite place for a great coffee and a relaxing time. My family and I were enjoying a lazy Sunday and decided on gypsy espresso, it appeared busy! Had funky clientele and cool red coffee cups. Upon entering we were greeted the friendly staff who promptly took our order for food and coffee. The good times ended at this moment. The first warning was Luke warm latte which had to be sent back. The milk had obviously been old and reheated. They generously replaced this with a great latte! The long black I received was way too watery and flat in taste. The macchiato I was told was okay. Three sandwiches were brought out 30 minutes later. The bread was hard toasted, and painful to eat. The fancy gruyere sandwich tasted like it had been made in a school canteen. There was no salt shaker in sight... All in all it was terrible cafe experience For a Sunday in the middle of the day. I would definately recommend somewhere else. read more

Horrible service. A large coffee is $4.50(!!) and when I made the mistake of looking surprised at this, the waitress berated me and effectively said that if I was too poor to pay $4.50 I shouldn't be there! She THEN implied that I was angling for a free coffee! I wanted to complain to the manager about her but - she IS the manager. Instead I'll just never go back.
