It's neatly decorated with butcher block made of tree trunks, which was very cool. They sell sauces to go with the incredible meats they sell. And the meats were incredible: the largest tomahawk steaks I've ever seen; aged New York strip, black angus ribeyes, bone marrow and more. (All the prices in the photos are in Mexican pesos) If I lived here, this place would be on the top of my shopping list. The prices are really good. For example, the most expensive item is the Angus rib eye steak, which costs $9.60 per pound (US). If you get here after noon, they have a little grill outside where they'll prepare your purchase for you (I was here too early for that). The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I didn't have the chance to try their meat (my hotel wouldn't allow me to have a barbecue in the room for some reason).

I ate at El chipilin, a small family owned restaurant in the back area where the vendors are less pushy. I had the Costilla De puerco frita ( fried pork ribs with tacos, black beans, lettuce salad ) . The service at the restaurant was friendly. Dealing with the vendors while walking through the market can be overwhelming as they can be pushy to purchase from them, politely decline and keep walking .

Not a fan. Not actually easy to get to (if you take the wrong bus from the Hotel Zone). We took the…read moreRed #2 / local (no AC bus) and quickly discovered it was more local than tourist. The bus was packed with locals heading home from working in the hotel zone, so it was nearly impossible to alert the bus driver to stop...so we were dropped off a mile from our original planned stop. Thanks Google/Apple Maps for getting us to Mercado 28. Not fun! I'm guessing the orange bus (that we took to parque de las palapas) has a more direct route. Once we found our way there, it's the park of visiting these type of venues I hate. All the vendors are attempting to get you into their little shop, sometimes quite aggressively...and there are many small shops in the aisles/corridors of Mercado 28. So that aspect is not fun in the least. Then comes the next step, trying to get a good price on something you might be interested in. Know your peso conversions! They'll start extremely high, so you have to haggle. My daughters BF was buying a "drug rug" hoodie for a relative. It started at roughly $80 US. After quite a bit of time going back and forth, he finally got the price down to $35 (and that still seemed high ... for me at least, knowing I had one of these 40+ years ago and it was like $10, lol). I bought two hats from this same vendor and the haggling was nearly as exhausting. It started out for like $65 for the two hats, but we finally got to a price I was happy with. Something positive to say? There are many, many vendors selling goods (many of which are the same, but there are quite a few unique shops). If you love haggling, this is the place for you. Odds are you may get a better price than what you can find in the hotel zone. There are also many food vendors, but they're pushy too so we just decided to walk the half mile (maybe more like 1 mile) to parque de las palapas for our meal. We also knew where to get the bus back to the HZ from Palapas, unlike from Mercado 28 where we had to hike in from parts unknown.

They do custom birthday cakes on the second floor, too, so no need to pay exhorbitant hotel prices to celebrate a loved one's special day! Entire cakes here are $17-$20! Definitely bring your own shopping bag & be prepared to tip the bagger a few coins at checkout. You can pay by card or even US dollars, but change is in Mex pesos. Great place!

If you are from the US or Canada, there will definitely be some comforts of home that you will need to substitute or do without. Also, there are other things that you may be used to buying that they simply do not have. For example, milk is not available in 1 gallon containers. Coffee creamer is hit or miss. We used cooking cream that was vanilla flavored. They do seem to always have hazelnut creamer if you can live with that instead. Grocery stores in Mexico also have a full selection of liquor. The tequila selection here is greater than what I have seen in a liquor store in the US. This grocery store is also the local appliance center, home goods, and moped dealer but I doubt if you are buying any of that stuff while you are here for your extended stay. They do take credit cards and do not charge you a conversion fee upfront. If you have an elderly person bagging groceries with the checkout person, please tip them. They are not employed and your tip is their wage. Bottom line - This is the largest and best grocery store on Isla Mujeres. It is our go-to location for almost anything we need for our extended stays.

Note that you need to bring your own grocery bags and cannot carry in a backpack. If you do you have to leave it at the customer service counter. Chedraui also has anything you may have forgotten for the beach -- hats, sunglasses, sunscreen. Centrally located on the island. We often walked there and then took a cab back with our groceries.
