This is one of those odd places that, walking in, you get that feeling of "I think I'm not supposed…read moreto be in here". Maybe you got that feeling the first time you entered "Adult Bookstore" (before the internet made those businesses largely irrelevant) maybe you get it while walking alone, down an alley, in a big city. The interior is dark and dimly lit. There is a poor selection of liquor and beer and some really great Alaska kitsch. I wish I could show you but photos are not allowed in here! Seriously, WHY? This place loses major points for this rule. I mean, the placee feels like a strip club...but...I didn't see any dancing girls. Am I missing something? Worth a stop for the weirdness and the history, buy your liquor somewhere else though.

Mary Lou's Liquor Store is so Alaskan it almost seems like a parody. Rocks in the parking lot are painted like giant gold nuggets. A mural features a grizzly chasing a well-endowed cartoon woman. Mary Lou Redmond, the owner, was born just about the time Prohibition ended. She still runs the little liquor store in a crooked log-cabin. You can buy a "dollar beer" there but it will cost you $1.25. The most Alaska thing about Mary Lou's is probably her attitude. She's contrarian, fond of dirty humor and fiercely provincial. If you come up here, this place is a must stop.

We have quite a squat trailer, and I had to help husband back into it, as we were between 2 larger RV's, and there are very long logs, showing you which is your spot. There are fire pits provided, and picnic tables - both have seen better days. If you have a bathroom//toilet in your RV, it might be best for you to use it, or pop to the ones next door at the Dirty Skillet which are magnificent. We've stayed here twice now, and whilst the bathroom is functional, (the toilet does flush, and you can wash your hands in cold water) the door currently won't lock, because it won't actually shut fully. It's not the cleanest bathroom I've used either. I had to get my husband to stand guard at the door, as I needed to be in there a while (if you catch my drift) The best things about this RV/Camp Site, are the store, and the Dirty Skillet, just on the other side of the fence. The store provides all your grocery and liquor needs, and Dirty Skillet is a an excellent restaurant. $37 per night for RV spots and $27 for camping spots.

They happened to be the closest convenience store to our creekside accommodations for the night. The workers were kind and efficient. Our first stop was to get a few Denali Brewing packs from their liquor store, our second visit was on the grocery side. Both experiences went without hiccup. We were able to find everything we needed.

Gold Rush liquor has been purchased by the parent company that also owns Brown Jug. As a result,…read moretheir bush order department no longer exists. Instead of continuing to monitor the old bush orders email address and notifying customers of this change, they allowed it to become an email black hole. After my second order attempt in months, I called them only to be told by a Brown Jug employee that "Gold Rush was supposed to notify their customers". Further, although it seemed like they were able to get into the email account after that, and I sent updated copies of my license and liquor permit, they apparently lack the capability to provide a pre-shipping subtotal... either that, or they just decided my request was unreasonable and they don't want to do business with me any more. I might never find out; they still haven't called me back, and I'd sooner order from someone else. Problem is, it looks like Liquor Stores USA North is attempting to buy up all the liquor stores in Anchorage, so you'll soon not have a choice but to put up with their bullshit.

Clearly labeled sections make finding your spirit of choice a breeze and the low shelves makes finding people even easier. My friends split up upon entering but keeping track of each other was simple enough. And the selection! Wow. I saw alcohol here that I can't find anywhere. I immediately regretted not having more time in Anchorage for surely I'd pick up more. Everyone was so friendly here too! Employees were polite but not over bearing. The only downside is the price. We were on a hunt so we went here and then immediately to other stores. We were surprised to find identical product (same brand, type, size) $10 cheaper elsewhere. For the hard to find stuff Gold Rush is the spot, but for everything else there's cheaper elsewhere.
