We're on our way to Quebec City and looking for a light late supper on the road. We wanted something local versus Subway or other fast food. With a darling name, La Belle Quebecoise appeared to be an interesting choice given the Yelp stars. The cute cobblestone exterior and signage gave it the appearance of a quaint country inn but that was not to be the case. Should have paid more attention to the age of the reviews and the comments.
First of all, the staff couldn't be bothered to greet and seat us. In fact, they seemed to ignore us. After a polite interval we asked to be seated and was told "Sit anywhere." We perused the menu and all settled on soup and salad since it was so late.
The waitress was civil but chilly. Even my young daughter could detect her forced smile.
The fried onion (French onion) was ok, as was the pea soup. The mushroom soup was thin and metallic tasting as if it came right out of the can. The salads were simply awful and insanely overpriced for the meal. My chef salad was served in a small cereal bowl with bitter iceberg, 1 cucumber slice, and 1 tomato slice. That was it. My two girls ordered Caesar salad. Their salads came in much larger bowls. This "Caesar" had Kraft grated Parmesan "shaker" cheese and fake bacon bits. It bore no resemblance to a Caesar salad. One of my girls sent it back since she can't tolerate bacon bits. The waitress was not pleased and removed the salad without a word. She returned with another salad that had wilted browned tops of the romaine. My husband's ham salad was a plate of wilted iceberg leaves, the same lonely slice of cucumber and tomato with a few strips of processed deli ham. These had to be the poorest excuses of salad ever.
We left hungry, feeling unwelcome and ripped off. Our departure was just as chilly as our welcome. We were polite, respectful and pleasant to our server but it was not coming back. I urge travelers to skip La Belle Quebecoise and go to Subway. read more
