I highly recommend eating here and enjoying the atmosphere and the cuisine.

This is a great place to grab dinner and a drink - just don't do it at Le Zinzolin. The menu is limited and riddled with average options. The fettuccini and the tuna tartar are both your best bets if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself at Le Zinzolin. Avoid the steak (see photo) at all costs. Easily the worst dish sampled during a recent 12-day trip through France. While the food is average at best, the service is downright bad. Servers are aggravated by your presence and seemingly resentful of your business. I will accommodate them by not returning.

First on our list of restaurant contenders in Arles was Le Galoubet. The woman at the front desk of…read moreour hotel happily made a reservation for us, since pretty much everyone says you need a reservation to get a table there. She seemed to be on a first name basis with whomever it was on the other end of the line. It was warm enough to sit outside, and we were given the last table on the patio out front. The starters were a mixed bag. I ordered the octopus salad, which was bland and uneventful. My wife ordered an incredibly tasty leek salad with sardines and hazelnuts, which she happily devoured. But the highlight was the mains. I ordered what was basically a New York strip cooked medium rare in a morel mushroom sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection - and on the rarer side - while the sauce was very subtle, but you could still get a bit of that earthy, mushroomy flavor. I'd been craving a dish like this for several days, and it totally hit the spot. My wife's dish may have been even better: cornish hen bathed in a creamy, herb-infused sauce with freshly sautéed shitake mushrooms. My god this was delicious. The hen was amazingly juicy and tender, and generous amounts of rosemary and flat-leaf parsley made this dish explosively flavorful. The potent shitakes were rich and earthy, and perfectly suited/melded with everything else. For dessert, I had this chocolate thing with nougat inside and a nice caramel sauce, while my wife had this thing that was a pile of whipped cream and broken pieces of meringue with raspberries, raspberry coulis, and red currants. I liked mine better, but the wife's was light and refreshing, which suited the summer-like weather. And before we were halfway through our meal, the place was full. We saw the hostess turn away at least a dozen people, so good call on the reservation.

Beyond the unusual ambiance, the food was excellent. I wasn't expecting traditional cuisine, but I was amazed in particular by a fascinating regional dish that was presented with several gourmet twists. Gardiane de Taureau is a complicated specialty of the region, and the Chef prepared it with a reverence for tradition, but added Gnocchi instead of potatoes and a beautiful red lace bread accent that mimics a Flamenco dance fan. It's all very complicated to describe, but trust me, the chef pulls this off in a stunning tour de force. I followed the main course with a delightful mango/passion fruit Panna Cotta. The two exotic flavors combined nicely with an elegant Panna Cotta, quite remarkable. The service is attentive and informative. I could tell that the staff wanted to uphold a high standard of quality. In conclusion the cuisine, service, and unique setting combine for an unforgettable evening.

Once we finally ditched them, we had our first alone time in Arles. After checking into the hotel, we discovered that the restaurant was closed. The hotelier kindly reserved us dining at L'Autruche. We found a charming restaurant in the middle of a seldom traveled road. A choir was practicing nearby. Our waiter (who turned out to be the owner) came and presented dinner on a chalkboard, from which we ordered. We found the food to be very inventive and delicious. Highlights included the tempura leaves of vegetables and the seared tuna fish. The dessert with panna cotta was also delicious! The owner apologetically informed us that the credit card machine was broken, and asked us to simply return the next day to pay. I love how they trusted us! We also met the chef, who was a young French Canadian that recently became the chef at this restaurant. Since we loved this restaurant, we returned the next day to pay and also have lunch. The owner's beautiful young wife was taking the turn to serve! She was also charming and we had delicious lamb and also the lunch special, which was an amazing 14 euro and included an appetizer, and excellent pork tenderloin entree, AND a great strawberry panna cotta! All in all, a charming, friendly and uplifting experience, in a small charming city.
