But there was nothing beyond that. No smile or friendliness to make us feel like we were welcome there. No refilling of water or checking if we needed anything else. But perhaps that is just the food culture here so not knocking them for that since we're just ignorant foreigners. But the food, sadly, was not very good. We had the basic pasta with marinara sauce. Noodles were soft and overcooked. Sauce was flat and tasted like bottled sauce. And this cost us 16 Euros. If you're hungry and need some food, then this restaurant will work for you. If you're looking for something that will delight you, keep looking.

I got the steak with peppersauce, which was cooked perfectly, and cost 21.5 euro; my girlfriend got the salmon with veggies at a cost of 20 euro. The menu has English subscript. The food comes with a small appetizer of fish spread and olives, and the main courses come with an order of french fries. So worth the recommendation! I have a shellfish allergy, and since the country is known for its mussels I was a little nervous but they took care to tell me what was in the sauces with the dishes. As an aside, you pay at the bar. Also: tipping is not expected in Belgium. Enjoy!

I recommend you read the menus displayed outside before making your choice. The beau reallllly wanted to go to this place, so I gave in. I had the Kriek Max beer on draught, which was super refreshing. For dinner, we shared the Flemish stew, which was plenty of food for both of us to share. The dish came with a bowl of salad topped with a creamy dressing, and a side of fries. The fries were ordinary, and not seasoned, because it's meant to be smothered into the stew. The stew was classic dark, loaded with beef and slow-cooked mushrooms and carrots. The flavor was good, but not spectacular. It seemed like a good hearty stew to me, and went well with my juicy, tart beer. If I was to return to De Trompet, I would try a different dish... possibly one of their omelets.

The wine went well with the stew and it was good enough to have two glasses! Had I not been so full, I'm sure a third would have been in order. A classic interior with wood panelling. It is a wonderful place to watch the sun go down on summer nights over a beer, but the terrace may get quite cold during winter when it is not heated. Even inside, the constant opening of the door to the terrace can make it unpleasantly chilly, and the staff doesn't mind too much: they are probably used to it. The staff on our visit - or rather: the waiter - was clearly overworked and unfortunately took it out on the customers - which should never happen!
