Fun and cozy little place in the gayborhood in Paris. We met some friends here for a drink. It was very lively and the seats on the sidewalk were full so we sat just inside and with the open doors it was like sitting outside. Initial service was great and there were some happy hour prices so that was good. Unfortunately then our waiter disappeared and when we went to the bar to order they said to use the waiter but we actually never saw him again. We were finally able to order at the bar but it just created more friction than necessary. I guess it's the capitalist in me but I never understand why businesses actively resist taking money for goods and services when paying customers are offering it. In any event, this is a cute and fun place and seems a little more relaxed and less of a scene than some of the other places in the neighborhood. I'd go back. read more

We love visiting Paris, and almost always stop at Open Cafe in the Marais, however, the service yesterday was incredibly rude and unacceptable. For a cafe named for openness, I was beyond offended. I always defend the French, who are renowned for being rude, but in this case, it was unfortunately spot-on. I hope the server at Open might check her attitude; I am truly disappointed. read more

Great place in the heart of the Paris gay district. Best part as a foreigner traveling is the free fast wifi allowing us the ability to have a drink or two and connect back home. We came two nights for drinks. Pretty hopping group of 30-40 something guys. Everyone seemed friendly. There is table service both inside and out. On a Monday we had a great lunch here. About 10€ a plate and the same for a nice house wine. The best part is the fact that the waiters are very easy to look at. read more

A busy lunchtime on a Friday in February; by myself having just arrived from Orly. Lots of tables on the terrasse and smoking is permitted. I took a stool at the bar and ordered a white wine and steak tartare. The bartender was attentive and friendly, though it was busy for him. The waiters looked engaging and the place had a good vibe. The steak tartare was really good and a basket of fries came with it for about €9. There's what looks to be an excellent happy hour after 6 o'clock with draught beers less than €5. Met up with some local mates for a sunny Sunday afternoon drink. Had a table on the sidewalk which made it great for both enjoying the sun and the "must do" people watching. Centrally located on the corner of a busy intersection in the area, this place is the place to go to see and be seen. The curb side sitting area is a charm. We came on a Tuesday night at around 11pm and the entire curb side seating area is taken up. We had a good viewing of passerby while sipping on Kir Royal (champagne based drink). There was not much of a crowd inside, likely because it was a Tuesday evening. The bar inside is modern but does not carry the best selection of alcohol. The seating area is also nice. The music inside was not obnoxiously loud so one can come hang out and carry on a conversation. read more

Open Bar is a busy gay bar in the heart of the Marais. I tried it out on a Friday and a Saturday and each night was quite different. On Friday, we went to Cox first and it was heaving. Then we headed over to Open Bar and got seats. It was the opposite on Saturday night- Cox was deserted and Open Cafe was packed. They do Happy hour until 11 so two beers was under €8 which is reasonable for Paris. read more

This is my second trip to Paris and we went here twice because it's right by the hotel we're staying at. I will preface this review by saying that the people watching is great and the cafe is in a good location. That's where the good aspects stop. The first time, we sat at a table outside and waited a long time for a server to come outside. They were a tad busy, but not to the extent they made it seem. Both servers were alternating their smoking breaks, standing out in front taking their time. Once the server finally arrived, she seemed upset by us asking for a drink menu. Then we waited another long period of time for her to come back. Once she came back, we ordered our drinks. A beer and a cocktail. She brought the drinks out and then demanded we pay right then and there. Now, I've been to many places in Paris and I've never seen that. I informed her that we planned on ordering additional drinks and she didn't care. She demanded we pay right then, even though many of he other customers had a running tab / hadn't paid. Like restaurants elsewhere, it's customary to pay at the end - not when the drinks are initially delivered. I was annoyed, to say the least, by their service (or lack thereof). The second time we went, it was happy hour. We decided to go and have a couple drinks outside and watch the people as they walk past. After the first time, I wouldn't have returned except for it being so close to the hotel and I wanted to give it another try. Well, we found an empty table so we sat down to wait for the server. When he came out, he informed us that we needed to get up because he "needed" to place a high top table there. He planned on putting the high top there and removing the chairs. I was shocked. What kind of place forces customers to get up so they can switch out a table like that? It should be noted that there were not any other high top tables. I found the whole thing bizarre. Frustrated again by their lack of customer service, we walked down the street to a cafe that was more than happy to treat us well and have us as customers. The first bar to try when you are new in Le Marais district. Very crowded from early in the morning for it is located at a central crossroads in the Marais. The small terrace with its few tables is especially popular. It is the best place for a good look at the boys passing by or, better yet, to be seen by them. The customers can be queen stars or not, without complex. The staff is friendly and handsome. You can eat simple plat du jour at noon and salads and burgers all afternoon. Two brunches in Sunday to chose from one salted, one sweet. They are the less expensive in the neibourhhod as they are also not that big. But it is usually enough for those who are not ravenous. read more

Have been coming here, giving it a chance over and over again for the past year. Came alone and had horrible attitudes by the servers pointed my way. Wrote it off as Parisian. Came here later with a friend, got great service but got ripped off on the bill and when we corrected it, received bad attitude from our server. Came here Christmas for lunch, ordered coffee after a lukewarm lunch and received it 40 minutes later (there were only 5 people in the entire restaurant). Went back yet again because apparently I am a glutton for punishment and got stuck with the first waiter I ever encountered there and received even more bad attitude than before. Now, not only was my broken French not good enough but, he didn't understand anything I said at all. I finally had to order a dam hamburger in Paris because his aloofness was beginning to finally irk me. Received my food well after two other patrons who not only arrived after I had placed my order but, after they had received their food. No refill on water, no checking up as usual. Dry as a bone over done burger which was supposed to be medium. Anyhow, I tuned it all out with my headphones and listened to my music as I worked and ate at the same time. I see my server talking to a Japanese couple next to me so I take out my ear buds to ask him for a coffee and to take away my dishes and guess what... Fluent English with a subtle mastery of grammar. At this point I only spoke to him in English but kept it polite. Ordered my coffee and he said he'd be back. 40 minutes later I was still waiting for my dishes to be removed, my coffee to arrive not to mention, my server to show up! When I saw him, this time in a stern voice had to ask for my coffee yet again, in fluent French (funny how that happens when you get angry) and gestured at my dishes going any time now. The dishes were removed and my coffee miraculously arrived within 2 minutes. I asked for the bill in French immediately and guess what, received it immediately as well. About the only part of the service that was prompt. Thanks but no thanks open cafe. I'd rather eat out of a dumpster than be treated subhuman by you again. read more

I used to come here during my study abroad days and have returned every time whenever I visit Paris for old times sake. Wow. Despite being fluent in French, I was absolutely refused service because I was speaking English with my friend while we waited. Bartender wouldn't even look at us as he had his back to us like we didn't exist. He didn't know that I could easily order using French. I love the French language. I love Parisians. I dislike ignorant Americans who complain that all French waiters/bartenders are rude. In this case, the staff at Open Cafe really proved themselves to be terrible people. Never again. read more

While in Paris we ventured to the heart of Marais district and we often ended up here for a drink. We were lucky to get sidewalk sitting during the happy hour, but you often have to fight your way in to get a seat. Generally, the seats indoors were available. I did not venture to eat anything here after seeing some of the food people were eating - did not look too appetizing. The drinks are over priced, but I expected that since your are in a prime spot in the heart of the gay district. I do have to agree with other reviews that the wait staff leave a lot to be desired. They are often absent and standing at the bar talking, or when they do show up they stand and talk with friends passing on the street. I noticed that a time or two that we were delivered 16 ounce beers and Parisians were given the 20 ounce beer for the same price. When I brought this up with the waiter he all of a sudden did not understand any English. Great place to people watch, but expect to be your own server. read more

4 of my friends and I were on the search for a different restaurant for lunch in this area which is an area full of gay-themed stores, bars and restaurants, but the place we were looking for had apparently closed, so we ended up in Open Cafe, very hungry. It is on the corner and looked like it was a fun place to stop, not to mention the steak someone was eating at one of the outdoor table looked delicious. We got table inside right away and the waiter tried very hard to accommodate our English speaking group, while we also tried to use French (unsuccessfully). The menu was in French, so I ended up getting one of their daily specials, strip steak with fries. The fries were delicious. The steak was OK, a bit overcooked but had a good mushroom sauce. We shared a bottle of delicious merlot. There was free wifi! Overall, it was a pretty good place to stop for lunch. read more

Very nice bar to hang out. You can sit at the tables outside, have drinks, and watch the Marais crowd go by. The waiters have always been pretty good. It gets crowded on weekends. Week day nights are always a good time to get a table outside. The heat lamps are great and allows you to stay outside during the cold nights in Paris. Enjoy. read more

Dear owner/manager of L'Open bar Cafe: 1. I know that I am in France and the language here is French. I respect that very much. My first language is English. 2. That said, I did not know the word for 'olive oil' when trying to place my order last Thursday, April 3rd. at about 3:00 pm. 3. Your waiter stared at me with no expression, despite me knowing the French word for 'olive', and correct pronunciation. 4. I ended up only eating your free bread, with butter that I secured from the bartender inside. 5. We later learned that another waiter on duty spoke perfect English, but our waiter didn't bother to ask him to help me. 6. The other waiter was wonderful..not too tall, dark hair, brown eyes. But it was too late at that point to order food. 7. Our waiter was very short, lighter skin and light eyes with dark hair. 8. Are you in the restaurant business to make money or score cultural points with English speakers? 9. Don't bother with this place, they're rude and snooty, with a superior attitude. TV plays AussieBum commercials over and over - okay could be worse!. Staying in the Marais for a week, went to L'Open Cafe yesterday afternoon (a friday) with a friend that is traveling with my partner and myself. We went for a quick cocktail before going home to get ready for dinner. We travel all over the world and I have to say that this place is the worst of the worst. The attitude from the staff is appalling, service is horrendously slow and the atmosphere is just bland. The drinks, WOW. Do NOT order a vodka cranberry unless you REALLY LOVE cranberry juice. Anyways...we didn't like our first experience so we went home, changed went to dinner and decided that we ALL might try it again for an evening drink. Walked in and found a table...a server came up and took our order, three beers (your best bet) and they finally arrived 15 minutes later. Gave him 20 euros for a 9 euro bill and he gives us 2 euros change and walks away (not too far as to see if we would notice). Well, we did notice and called him back and without even an explanation he gave us the rest of our change. We left. This place is pathetic. The service is so substandard and they REALLY need to lose their attitude because the place is a hole from the bar to the drinks to the service to the bathrooms and on.
