(Or you can do more typical crafty things like ceramics, or learn to use your sewing machine.) They're part of the county park district, and the breadth of classes they offer is amazing. Prices are reasonable and supplies are included. The mission (from their website) is: "The Michigan Folk School is committed to creating a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through the teaching and sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music, and skills in an inspiring natural setting and to promote the preservation of forest and farmland." They do, and how. Anyway, I crossed two state lines to take a one-day millinery class (hatmaking), offered a couple of times a year either as two evenings or a full day. There aren't a lot of places that teach millinery, and while it was more basic than a class I took elsewhere, that other location has moved to Kentucky, and beggars can't be choosers. If I hadn't taken that other class I wouldn't have known about some things that were simplified (we didn't apply sizing; the brim edges weren't stitched; barbed elastic cord wasn't available; I don't think we curved the petersham ribbon for the sweatbands; no one made a hat with a separate brim and crown...). Everyone, including me, left with a felt hat we'd made ourselves that we were happy with, including people who knew zilch about hatmaking when they came in. Teacher was very helpful, sending out suggestions ahead of time and instructions on how to measure our heads in additon to asking what color and type of hat we wanted to make so she could bring it. She provided a good introduction, an idea book, and had enough tools to keep us all productive and happy, and was super patient. Bringing your own sewing supplies is helpful but not required - I was happy to have a couple of needles, a needle threader and scissors just so I didn't have to wait for them. There's time for lunch while your hat dries (they're formed with steam); honestly, the two-evening class is probably a better option if you're local. Nice selection of hat blocks; do some research and do some thinking ahead of time. You may want to bring your own trim if you have something specific in mind (feathers? a particular type of ribbon or floral trim?), since the teacher brought some but the stock isn't deep and is brought in special. I made a pillbox hat and if I were doing this again, I would have asked about elastic or googled "barbed elastic cord for hats" and spent $5 on some before coming. The teacher suggested I braid thin elastics which works but having taken the other class I know "there's an app for that" and wish I'd planned ahead. The directions about where to go onsite which they provided ahead of time were helpful, but do allow extra time to get here if you haven't been before; it's outside of town, located on a farm.

I rarely give out kudos because you have to really impress me before I do. I have been a part of…read morethe Paradigm family for over a year and I am giving kudos to them. First, this is a woman run business and it is run VERY well. The owner makes sure that she complied with all laws and rules and ensures that her staff does the same. I have never gone there and the center hasn't been clean, I am weird, I even looked in the bathroom when touring for the second time prior to going there to see if they really did clean. They were spotless and did not smell. The staff is very warm and inviting and they treat you as if you are their family. They are open with anything going on in the center, even if things may not directly affect you. The staff takes very good care of the children, they teach them in everything they do, whether it is pointing and saying what an object is or having their daily curriculum. ( they even do this at an infant level ) Since the pandemic, the owner and the staff have ramped up their cleaning, which is amazing because they were very meticulous prior to the pandemic. I was very scared as to whether if not I should send anyone to school and let me tell you, the Paradigm family stepped up even before the orders were issued by the governor. They wear masks, clean even more often, have masks at the front if someone outside of the Paradigm pod has to come into the building. They keep up on communication of new rules and practices they are implementing just to keep everyone informed and safe. I will continue to recommend Paradigm anyone that asks where they should send their children. Not just for the academic portion, but for the love they show every child. My little one loves it here and asks to go to shool multiple times a day and when we get there, barely says goodbye before running in ( they are just learning how to speak. ) everyday. If you are looking for a place where you can breathe not just during this pandemic but everyday, I highly recommend The Paradigm Family. I have been going to Douglas J for months almost a year. So that I do not skip an appointment. Today as I am getting ready to go to my appointment, I receive a phone call saying that they have to "cancel/reschedule" my appointment due to my stylist would be a hour late and that would put her behind on all her other appointments. So this means I am unable to have my appointment but everyone else had theirs. So they tell me, I have to reschedule for another day which who knows when ( they did try to say they could squeeze me in tomorrow (Saturday), I already have plans during the time they stated. And all I got after that was a sorry that's all we can do. It's MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND!!! And it seems like they really had no concern about messing up my weekend plans. Oh, then I get a email stating that I canceled the appointment and I can reschedule. Which I did not they did.
