This restaurant is located in the lovely little village of Fourcés. A few of us just ordered a simple green salad, but my sister ordered one with thin slices of beef and it was fabulous! I should have ordered that! My sister's bf ordered the charcuterie and his was nicely presented and very good too! As for beverages, a bottle of white wine and water sufficed. For our mains, our group ordered the following: Duck Confit, Baked Zander in a Pouch, Steak Frites, Pork Chops, Lamb, and Lobster. Everyone was pretty happy with their dishes. The duck confit was tender and tasty. The steak had a bit more fat than my sister wanted, but it was good. I had the lobster which came in a cassolette with vegetables and a really delicious broth with puff pastry on top and it was delicious! My husband's pork chop was good, but not as tender and tasty as the one he had at Chateau Léognan. He finished it and gave my sister and I a taste. We managed to save room for dessert. We ordered the Moelleux au Chocolat (molten chocolate cake), ice cream, and cheese. All were excellent and nicely presented. People skipped the espresso as it was about 10:30 when we finished our meal. Service was good. The restaurant had three large parties like ours and two servers serving all those parties, but they managed to attend to our needs. Everything came out hot and mostly at the same time. And when our server came by with our check (you have to ask for it in France), our total was 232€, about $58 per couple which includes service charge and taxes. So much more inexpensive to eat out in France! As we were settling our bill, a band started playing rock music (in English) inside the restaurant. Fourcés is a small village, so I am sure the whole town can hear the music. I'm so glad we decided to stop by Fourcés on our last night in SW France. Dinner was great at l'Auberge and this little town is so charming!

However when we arrived with a large group for lunch, they said the kitchen has closed and can't serve us. As in France the restaurant maybe open but kitchen will close after 3 pm. Hmmm. Long way to come out of the way for nothing. However restaurant next to it, le carrousel gourmand was will to take us in. Nice people.

We have had one lunch in there. One lunch, but two different set menus. Both were supposed to be technically clever, upmarket posh, if you like. And the wine was certainly at upmarket prices (13EUR for a bottle I buy in my local shop for less than 3EUR). But frankly, both meals were a little disappointing, especially as it was for my wife's birthday. Presentation triumphed over eating pleasure, which in my book is a serious error. There were three menus: 16EUR, 26EUR and a carte at 38EUR. I had the 16EUR menu, and my wife had the 26EUR one. The quality of food for the price was outstanding, though personally I found it rather heavy with olive oil. Before the first item on the menu, we were brought a mise en bouche (appetiser) which was anchovy and some cold asparagus. I am not a fishy person, but I very much enjoyed that. My first course was a tart base supporting tomatoes, garlic and salmon. Very nice - though I'm not normally a fan of salmon. My wife had oven-baked pimentos stuffed with cod. I tried that, and it was delicious, though very rich. My main course was blanquette of veal, with what I think were fir-apple potatoes, and my wife had a large slab of tuna on a bed of a sort of ratatouille and the same potatoes, and topped with some sort of egg soufflé, which she didn't like, but I did, but it was again a very rich dish. For dessert, my cheapie menu had just a sort of yoghurt-y thing, which was a bit like eating boiled egg white; my wife had apple croustade with filo pastry, liberally dosed with armagnac. I'm delighted to say that she preferred my dessert to hers, so we did a swap!! With coffees and a bottle of wine, it was around 58 euros.
