I rang to book for the St Valentine evening - think it was actually the chef who answered - anyway,…read morehappy conversation...definitely not a St Valentine meal but the usual menu (after last year's disaster at La Guingette, one of our favourite places usually, we avoid anything "special")
We arrived, coats taken, welcoming and cosy reception and atmosphere.
I thought the menu a little small
We settled on a Viognier and a Brouilly while we decided. In the end we both chose the smoked salmon, my partner went for the piece du boucher (bavette with a sort of mash, mushrooms and a sauce...and a surcharge) and I chose the souris d'agneau with mash. Accompanied by a 50cl Malbec; then coffee
I thought the salmon was well smoked but my partner - who is Scandinavian - thought too much so. Ignoring that, it was delicious
But we both left rather disappointed...mainly because the bavette, as is so often the case in France with any steak, was was as tough as old boots (and too red for me in any event) ...sorry from the waitress when she asked how our meal was, doesn't really cut it.. As it was, my partner left at least 3/4s of it. My souris was fine but needed some vegetables of some description; it looked a little lonely. I seem otherwise to have chosen well, plenty of meat and very tender
Thought it was or had been a Rostang place, but not so sure. Shame, nearly but not quite
