In the morning, when the snack bar is still closed, you will take little notice of the squared building with closed blinds opposite the gas station but at night you will see a little neon sign and a lot of activity not at least because of the excellent transport connection. Since we are in the French speaking part of Belgium, stepping into the snack bar through one of the two entries you'll be welcomed by a friendly "Bonjour" (the ladies speak very good German, too, but not sure about English though) and you'll find yourself immediately in front of a counter where a wide range of snacks wait for preparation in the deep fryer behind. On the left side there is a small separated room with tables and chairs. I ordered a large portion of chips and in a short time got a deep plastic cup filled to the brim with the delicious Belgian national dish. Compared to the well-known portion size in Germany it is really large for a very reasonable price of 2 Euros (as of March 2010). The Fritterie appears to enjoy a good reputation since the restaurant has been mentioned in a very positive way by our host as well as in newspaper clipping you'll find on the wall inside the restaurant.

Should you indulge? There is only one answer: Oui! Everything from bread to dessert was perfect. The fish dishes were true stand-outs, especially the salmon soup. The French fries were superb, light and crisp yet hearty enough to stand up to the divine sauces. The asparagus was of the white variety and delicious. People here know how to enjoy dinner as has been said many times before. My dinner took 2 hours and there were families that were there before I got there and were still there after I left. Mindful eating is the culture here, quality not quantity. Merci, danke schoen and to the lovely waitress who only got a $20 American tip because I had no euros ( it's a long story but you can blame Icelandair) and the credit card bills here don't allow you to add a tip... We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 9:15pm) and it was busy. There was a private event upstairs so the inside was packed. Luckily, we were able to snag a table outside beside the heaters. Nice touch with the blankets for you to use if you get cold. Only downside is lots of chain smokers but that's at most bars. There were a couple menus but we only were here for beers (€2,50 to €5,80 range). - Tannenzäpfle (€2,50 for 0,33L) - 2x Eifeler landbier (€2,50 for 0,30L) - 2x Bolten alt (€2,50 for 0,30L) Chill, laid back spot to grab a few beers with friends.

Located (as the name suggests) right near the Dom, Domkeller offers good beer (German, Belgian as well as others) in a cozy atmosphere. For me, Domkeller embodies what a bar should be--a relaxed place where you can share a drink with friends and listen to good music (at just the right level) or have a good conversation. The music played here is fantastic and is an amazing mix that just about everyone will enjoy. They also regularly have concerts--I'm sure this place gets packed for those! Although a bit pricey (our bill came to around 12 with 2 beers and a snack) I think it's a nice enough place to enjoy a drink (skip the snack).
