Fortunately, I thought better of that, and called ASAP. They're true to their name: they could have come out the day I called them. When I asked for a ballpark cost, the man I spoke to told me that the most economical solution for me would be if I bought the motor, and they installed it. And here I was bracing myself for their upcharge on the hardware. Impressive. I scheduled the appointment for the next day and picked up the motor at Home Depot. Alan, the technician, was excellent. He called before coming over, and he was done in about an hour. He also gave me advice on the 25-year-old door, making it clear that he wasn't trying to sell me a door. The charge was $283, which was a little less than I expected (the man on the phone told me it would be $275 plus tax). Highly recommended.

Their prices were more than half of what I ended up paying, so it felt like I was charged a premium simply because they knew I needed immediate service. What made the experience even more disappointing was that the technician pointed out several maintenance items that would likely need attention in the future. I asked if he could address any of those issues while he was already there, especially since he estimated they would only take another 10-15 minutes. He declined and said those would require another service call in the future. I understand that companies have minimum service charges, and I expect to pay for a technician's time and expertise.
