When you ask for no mushrooms on your cheese steak and you get them. They blame Menulog because 'we can't see it, only no mushrooms on the docket, you know'. No. I don't know what the docket looks like but when you read it back to me that tells me you got the message. The cook said in the background 'i didn't put mushrooms on it'. The northern suburbs seem to have been inundated with various incarnations of burger shops in the past few years. In-fact, it's almost like a re-birth. Kustom seems to be running with the theme of vintage automobiles and ute's from the 60's and 70's. Inherently an American styled venue the menu draws much inspiration from the southern states of the US. The majority of the menu resolves around burgers, but there are items to keep one interested such as the chilli dog, con carne, and buffalo wings. The choices of burgers are great, and range from a twist on the Aussie burger, the classic beef cheese and bacon combo, available in 3 sizes, mushroom burger, and a buttermilk fried chicken option. It is easy to access by public transport with a tram stop nearby, which is a great positive to us. It has a coherent car theme which is different to what we have seen at other burger venues. The theme is incorporated really well, as even the burgers are named after cars. It is a decent sized venue, and the staff were very welcoming. We ordered the 'Impala Southern Fried Buttermilk Chicken Burger', the 'Combi Southern Fried Mushroom Burger' and banana and chocolate milkshakes. We also added beef patties to both of the burgers. The shakes came out first, and they were definitely a stand out. They looked great - and even though the presentation was fairly simple, it was still impressive. The shakes are extremely big for the small price of $6.50. Both were flavoursome and thick, and were both thoroughly enjoyable. The burgers then followed. Both were pretty big, and the chicken was particularly large. One thing we both agreed on was the fact that the burgers would be a lot more enjoyable for us without the slaw, as neither of us are really big fans. We recommend you get a burger without slaw if you are not too keen on it, as the flavour of it was really overpowering. Both of the burgers had the same ingredients, except one had chicken and the other had mushroom. The Kustom chipotle mayo was really delicious and tasted really good with the cheese. The chicken was juicy and seasoned well, and the mushroom was one of the best we have had. The beef patties were succulent and full of flavour too. With a great location, great prices and great food - Kustom Burgers are a must visit. read more

Not salty and hearty! the fries were good too. Same as the chippery fries but with coated crumbs. Was pretty addictive. Would recommend if your in the area. This place talks a big game visually, conceptually the burgers are 'ok' (if somewhat confused as to whether they are doing Americana or Australian Chip shop style) but the quality of the ingredients used are seriously out of whack with the pricing. I've ordered from here once before but I was too 'refreshed' to accurately gauge the quality of the good. Today I ordered an 'F150' burger and was pretty disappointed with the pattie which was pretty dry and bland and the burger kind of collapsed with the sauce and solo limp butter lettuce leaf used. I expected better for a $13 dollar burger. $3.50 for a can of soda is pretty darn steep too and the chips, while delicious, felt a little small for a $6.50 'large' serve. The place kind of feels like it was designed by someone who very much likes the Route66/rockabilly/australian muscle car aesthetic but probably didn't know heaps about cooking when they decided to do a restaurant. It's not really a place to hang out with a group in as, with the old ute occupying most of the customer space it can only seat about 14 and its a bit cramped inside. This store talks a better game in aesthetic and pricing than it delivers in quality and value. Feel a bit shortchanged, really. read more

I'm not really sure what the thing is with me and hamburgers, but this is another place that I discovered that I simply had to check out. Well, it is a burger joint that also have a bar, though they don't sell craft beers but rather they sell pretty ordinary beers, even though they have been brewed in micro-breweries. The burgers were okay, but a little greasy for my taste, but then again isn't that what you are supposed to expect with burgers. Actually, come to think of it not all burger shop do greasy burgers, but this certainly wasn't one of them. The other thing is that this place has an incredibly heavy car theme, and 1950s, 1960s car theme at that. In fact they have an old restored ute (or pickup truck) in the front area, which does take up a bit of room, but the traytop on the back has been turned into a table where you can sit down and eat your burgers. Also, as the name implies, you can heavily customise your burgers, or simply take one of the stock standard - I went for a stock standard simply because I'm not hugely creative when it comes to food. read more

There was a miscommunication about delivery and I'll own that I made a mistake, however the attitude of the woman who answered the phone when I rang to find out why our order hadn't arrived was disgraceful. Her tone was contemptuous and uncalled for. At the end of a rough day, people make mistakes just like I did. I did not deserve to be spoken to with contempt like that. We ordered from this restaurant over UberEATS. I also called to confirm. The restaurant said "there's a problem with our Uber system, and we'll deliver, but leave your number just in case; and we'll call you if there's a problem". 50 minutes later, when the order didn't arrive, I called. They said they couldn't deliver it. For some reason, they couldn't have called us either (even though they had our number). They had the audacity to say, "if you order through another service, we'll deliver"... in 50 minutes more! And they'd even have the gall to charge us for the order they already messed up, even when they would be close to 2 hours too late. No apologies, either! I don't know about their food (because I couldn't taste it), but I know one thing: The service is rude, uncaring, and doesn't deserve the money it charges. Period. read more

An overall average experience. Staff were non-responsive upon entering, and very blaze throughout the dining experience. The food itself - very oily patties leaving hands dripping with oil and unnecessary additions to all burger options (e.g bacon on everything) though some burgers seemed to be popular with others. The fries were average and very non-traditional, which is a bit contradictory to the vibe they're trying to create with the decor. The milkshake again was excessive and over the top fatty (cream on top not necessary or they could ask if you want cream or not at time of purchase). Final note: provide jugs of water for patrons to provide relief from fatty and salty foods. Not just glasses with 1 jug at the bar. Won't be returning. read more

Burgers are very 'flavour of the minute' here in Melbourne, while kustom does do burgers they're neither of the minute nor have any flavour. From what I understand the place has been open longer than a week and they still haven't gotten their order wait times down, I went in on a Friday night and could have gone to another burger place, come back, then still had enough time to make my own burger before my meal was ready. The place wasn't even that busy. So the staff are either poorly trained, not cooks or chefs or just lazy. The lack luster staff make sure the place is left rather filthy, the front window has a table that was constantly left covered in used napkins and old trays from customers that left long ago. The bar bench was greasy and the glitter paint chipped and scabby (could not of been glitter might have been old food and sauce caked onto the bench). Behind the front window table is a display fridge that looks morbid and unclean with wilted greens, I can't stress how unclean it looked and that's where they pulled the burgers from. A great image for a business that says it's all about fresh produce. The menu was basic, the patty I got on the f150 was over cooked and lacking any moisture while my partners was a biscuit, like it was a left over that had sat on the side of the hot plate until the same order came up again. I've read other reviews and found that have said things rather similar. I found that rather puzzling because 90% of the burgers are meat, cheese, bacon, it isn't hard to make them fresh and not use left over produce, or at least don't be silly to send out an old and new burger in the same order. The bun I got was an 'old school' that seemed rather cheap and couldn't hold together while my partner got the ever typical and amazingly unoriginal brioche, it was cut so poorly the burger was lopped sided and she swore it was the same as the ones at bread top. So far, nothing 'k'ustom... But I digress. The place has an overall cheap feeling too it with premium prices, on basic food, done poorly. The vibe felt very Fake and borrowed like it was trying to be as cool as Fat Bobs with the Americana rock and roll and as classic as say dannys or Andrews, but it just falls flat, the place doesn't look like it had even been completely finished being built. With so many options out there, you could throw a stone down the road and hit another 5 restaurants, I believe there are two other burger joints within 5 minutes. Plus with a McDonald's on bell Street, I just wouldn't bother. At least McDonald's are clean, fast, much much cheaper and hell you can even build your own 'k'ustom burgers there now! (They also have toilets, don't charge through the teeth for extras and don't charge for sauce for fries). I give this place 12 months or less if a newer original place opens along the same strip. read more

Extremely expensive and bloody cold! For some insane reason the owner decided to prop open the door on an 8 degree night, making it a freezer with chips. The burger was unexceptional - not bad, just meh, which for $15 was pretty outrageous. Avoid. read more

Amazing concept and great burgers to go with it. Each time we looked around the shop there was something else that had been designed obviously with passion. I had the Skids Burger which comes with the best chips I have ever had! I added bacon to my burger and I must say it was soooo tasty I wanted to have another but I have been eating so many burgers lately my partner and I have an agreement no matter how good the burger is we only have one hence he ordered What they call an F350 so he really got three burgers in one, shifty move but we were both very happy. Top customer service, an amazing feel in the shop, great music and lots of happy burger eaters. Thanks Kustom burgers we will be back . I want to try one of those cute little hamburger cupcakes next time we are in.
